I was reading the interview the other day and the devs were talking about how they will have different grades of chest, like regular, super, rare ect. I was wondering with the new looting system, when opening the chest will it just drop loot for the single person whom opened it, or for everyone in a certain screen distance. I guess the same could be sort of said for monsters also, do you have to be within say two screens to drop your loot if a monster is killed.
Sorry if this has been answered but i have not seen it anywhere.
About the range in which players share loot from dead monsters... could be from any reasonable range. In Diablo 2 there is a specific range from which you gain exp if a monster was killed by a party member, I suppose it is going to work in a smiliar way. Though... I really have big concerns about this because this would bring back the leeching problem... (low levels sticking to your ass getting drops and exp with no effort). So anyway... I can only guess chests would work like dying monsters because speed boosted players who take all the chests from their party members before they are even able to get closer doesn't really support the whole 'cooperative play' philosophy.
the looting system works with everything man no matter what everyone gets their own loot(i'm pretty sure not positive.) i wouldn't see why they would have the looting system just for a certain occasion.
btw nice sig romak but we've only seen the starting level basics of what the witch-doctor can do.
But more to the point I think they will have the chests spring individual loot. The devs surely know all these issues and don't want people fighting over something stupid. Now I don't know what kind of loot will pop from the more rare chests, perhaps good rares, sets, or even uniques? It'd be best if they just keep it the way it is for monster bosses or however they have it set.
Imagine you open a super rare chest and you get some magics and someone gets a sweet unique. LOL. It'll be a horrible feeling but it is fair, you'll cry for a sec but get over it I guarantee. I love that new looting system, some how I never thought about them doing this in future Diablos.

Anyway, talking about rare chests, there were better and worse chests in Diablo 2... like those glowing gold chests when you enter a wrong tal-rasha tomb which usually drop you a bunch of gold. The problem was that chests in Diablo 2 simply sucked... I remember 1 time in my life that I got a unique from a chest... and I been playing for years. So yeah... making chests better - I suppose it's going to be something like chests in Titan Quest, where chests drop no less than what monsters drop.
i think it makes sense for a chest drop to be like a free for all. Or just to the players who opened it.. But then that will start alot of problems. who knows.
Assigned drops are supposed to encourage multiplayer interaction by reducing the grab-fest.
However, I think it will have the opposite effect...why should I settle from 2 assigned drops from a chest if I could get 10 drops without those other people in the game?
Multiplayer in D2 was fun because it was a chance to get better items than playing alone -- having a bunch of people in the game increased the drop quality of monsters, and if I was quick, I could cash in on that by being the one to grab up good items.
That will no longer be the case, and it's not like I'm going to need help from other players actually killing monsters, so maybe the only reason left to do multiplayer is trading and PKing?
BTW, do you remember what that unique was? I'm curious. Don't think I ever got a unique from a chest, maybe a set piece.
It was long time ago, but I think it was a unique hammer... perhaps 'Bloodtree Stump' or something that looks like it... but yeah, I was shocked although the item itself wasn't that good.
Back to topic, I think what people get confused with, is the loot sharing system... mostly because Blizzard didn't make themselves clear yet. For now there are 2 options.
1. When a monster dies for a party of 2 players and drops 10 items, 5 go to 1 player and 5 go to the other player.
2. When a monster dies for a party of 2 players and drops 10 items, 10 go to 1 player and 10 go to the other player
I'd go for the 2nd option because in the 1st one, it can be unfair if you share loot with a guy who doesn't help alot. In the 2nd option it's like the same loot wether you play alone or with someone... which encourage cooperative play.
didnt they say everyone get their own loot?
i think they did..
its just like how it was in mythos, you can only see your own loot...
i like that better than the diablo style.
but id also like a timer option that you can set from 0 (instant) to * seconds, an off option and a hotkey..
0 seconds = your loot drops so everyone can see and loot it right away,
* seconds = * seconds then it show up for everyone to loot,
off = dont share it at all**,
hotkey = press to show it to everyone else...
(** = unless you press the hotkey)
I believe Blizzard said you would have to pick up your loot and drop it again for others to be able to see it. If there was a timer on it there would be people waiting around for the timer to end so they could see the rest of the loot, not exactly the fast paced game they are aiming for here.

i dont quite think it will go like that because if the total loot is randomized thru 2/8 players then 1 player could possibly come up with some great loot while others are left empty handed, however this is the way i imagine will happen.
"2" players
players kill monster and the loot randomizes for the individual players not total random loot then random spread.. get what im saying?
ah yes confirmation! source: click here

so it is seperate loot drops not an all together drop then spread thru the players so you dont have a player get unlucky with 1/2 grays.(like.. on a boss.)

um.. no i think it will have a great positive reaction from the players if you wanted to play by yourself then its a good chance you prob wont get good loot like in a full game and the + is after you kill a boss with your fellow players you dont have to worry about rushing to grab loot because your reward is there no matter what!(oh, how i remember assholes stopping combat 10 seconds before the bosses demise just to prepare for the loot grab.)

yeah that sounds about right, blizzard isnt stupid just look at the games they have made(looking at you haters.) you're dead on there man. gj
Here's how drops work in D3 as far as I understand it. if you are in a multiplayer game and are within a certain distance with the rest of your party and an item drops, everyone on screen sees an item drop, but everyone on screen gets something different and cannot see what the other characters can see. A character can then pick the item up with at their own leisure because they dont have to worry about someone else picking it up. Once the item has been grabbed, the character can drop it back down and the other characters can then see what they dropped. The same goes for chests, it eliminates the problem of one character killing a monster and everyone else rushing for the loot.

but u cant see other peoples drops but they are still there, but they are invisible to you and only the other person can pick up his drops
and i think that the drops that each person gets will random based on the magic find that THEY have, not the killer... that is just my opinion
