I was reading an interview about the art direction of Fable 2 and one of the guys was talking about how they made the cartoonish proportions a bit toned down... when this jumped out at me...
Mike McCarthy: ...We do know that whenever you do that with a successful product, you've got to be aware that this is the stuff that people like about it, so you've got to keep that in mind. Ian Lovett: Look what happened to the Diablo guys! Mike McCarthy: Yeah, exactly.
I think it's really funny how this whole thing became the pinnacle of game-developer phobia so fast. I mean, even developers on other continents fear changing their games too much now! http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=249006
haha this is ironic. I never am excited for video games and the past month I've been searching all over the internet for news on both fable 2 and diablo three.
fable 3 looking great so far :3 (im hoping i can make my dog fat! )
Thats a pretty amusing interview actually...
"I forgot what we were answering..."
"I forgot what I asked..."
lol
"The art is the backdrop, the animation is the personality - and the story on top is the reason that you're there." More companies should take this to heart.
Yeah, just did some quick researching on Halo and it's sold a whole lot. But then again, console gaming is a lot more prevalent in homes than PC gaming.
WoW : Burning Crusade holds the record for fastest-selling PC game of all-time, with 2.4 million sales in its first 24 hours.
I think Diablo 3 can beat that easily :). But this is coming from a fan boy :).
You really have to consider that a lot of WoW players are Diablo fans who thought that Diablo III would never come. Not only have they been long time Diablo fans, but they've learned to appreciate Blizzard's artistic style, which will definitely propel them to purchase Diablo III.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Diablo 2 was most selling game at it's time. Diablo 3 will crush those numbers, WoW fans will switch to D3 (some remaining in WoW of course). Lots of WoW fans are Diablo fans, a lot of Diablo fans aren't WoW fans and lot's of people who gave up hope on D3 (and maybe even PC games) will get hooked in again to relive their childhood.

The Diablo Series is one of the only games with such a crazy fanbase and no game can top that!
I agree that Diablo III will probably be the best selling PC game if not the fastest, but I wonder if it'll beat the score of the first game on This List
Why are you assuming that there will be any 'switching' from WoW or vice versa. Diablo will never be able to replace WoW and WoW will never be able to replace Diablo. One game is about tactics and planning, the other is about amining and clicking. I don't see people getting bored from thinking and switching to a game that is 100 times smaller and simpler in comparison. It would be like saying that D2 fans will switch to SC2 when it gets out. That's how different a genre we're talking here.
I for one, will be playing both D2 and WoW (and SC2, of course).

Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions
I know, right?
I am actually expecting D3 to rape Halo 3 sales.

It's not really fair to compare non-linear and linear RPG's.
