Hey guys, I dont know about you but i found crafting be to be really cool and fun (i mean who can deny that amazing orange text?). That being said i think it could be implemtend much better. Maybe they should keep something similar to whqat they have now but expand upon it...like the mix it and gamble at getting prefixes and suffixes and all that. But i also thought it MIGHT be cool if they had either of these...
1.) items that are needed to craft a certain unique item. This may is sorta like finding the pieces to the horadric staff and khalalms will. You need to find multiple REALLY RARE pieces to make a cool unique item (that isnt used for the quest purposes but for your pleasure lol)
2.) That they would have certain drops that are specific to crafting...such as a shard of glass, bone piece, leather, and so on. Maybe certain items would add certain suffixes and certain prefixes, but it would be random and there would be different quality crafting items...for example, see below
Only a certain amount of crafting items could be mixed with a NORMAL item...say 3 or 4 or somethign like that. like taking a axe and mixing it with a piece of glass, and leather, as to modify it and its looks possibly
They could implement EXTREMELY rare crafting items that are unique and look really cool.
oh and I PERSONALLY think it would be kinda cool if they had a shop for aesthatic crafting pieces, where you could buy some materials that allow you to mix with items, in order to change the appearance (only the appearance). Obviously this would be expensive to buy and there would be rare ones to find (no buying) by killing monsters,
Well as long as these uniques arent things you can actually loot straight up. I dont like the idea of "blurring" the lines between uniques, rares, and runewords. Everything else in your suggestion just sounds great. I think, unless you can get crafted uniques that can NOT be looted otherwise that you shouldnt be able to make things like that...can easily be fixed by expanding upon the crafting system and items.
So if the uniques you craft cant be obtained by normal MFing that would be awesome to implement. Also, if they actually add something like crafting items that just opens an almost limitless possibility of crafting combinations :).

lol no not like dye kitz really....but i didint think that was a BAD idea in HGl...they just didnt implement it anywhere near as well as they could have and should have.
lol im glad to see people like this...i personally dont want to customize the character themself...this isnt that type of game, but to have fun and unique armor looks would IMO be cool. yeah when your a low lvl in D2 and you dont care if you socket somethign stupidly, its fun to try and get a cool color on an item : P
Ive been thinking about this all day. Your pretty spot on and on the right track.
I believe each beastie, demon, ect should have a Crafting ingredient that drops only by the monster. What that will do is kinda force people to go out and get that ingredient. Crafting can only happen with Normal items and each class of weapon is harder to craft for Example Normal class items are easy to craft and have a 80% succuess rating while the Nightmare class weapon/armor sets have a 50% succuess rating and the next level would be 30% succuess rating.
It could really make crafting a focal point of the game. Though the draw back of course would be the better Ingredients (the ones that are very rare) would dictate the Diablo 3 Economy.
Ugh, please no useless crafting items please. I hate collecting things like charcoal and crap just to craft, thats why I liked diablo 2's crafting system.

It wouldn't be collecting items they wouldn't stack and they would be single items with a mod ranging lets say defense 1-100. and they would be rare to find and are soul bound to defer from that being the economy.
1) complete a extremely hard quest in order to
a) gain access to a NPC who can bind items
gain access to a magical anvil or location or some some sort
2) once you complete the quest you can now access the Magical Item Binding ability.
3) you can pick up too 3 different weapons or pieces of equipment of similiarity which you can bind together. binding items costs GOLD or MAGICAL GEMS depending on the
rarity and value of the items!!! the negative of binding magical items is that the properties are downgraded.
for example:
=======================
Iron Sword of Flame
8-12 Damage
2-5 Flame Damage
==============
BINDING WITH
================
Longsword of Light
5-14 Damage
+15% damage to undead
==============================
RESULT
Cost to Bind: 1 Ruby Gem
1 Skull
WEAPON IN RESULT
Forged Longsword of Flame
10-16 Damage
1-3 Fire Damage
10% damage to undead
=============================
get my drift?
