Let's not forgot about our fellow NPC friends! I'm sure in the video you saw those archers following the barb, however, I don't qualify those as mercs. I have a feeling you can still hire a merc. But through the dungeons, you can find random npc's that will follow you. But that's not what this is about.
The merc system was fun to use, so I have no doubt they will keep that. But as everyone knows, sometimes mercs just die too fast. Let's discuss some aspects you would like to see improved on the our meat shield friends.
I for one would like an ability to customize their skills, perhaps a small skill tree. A tree not as complex as ours, but just enough to give mercs a more friend like feel. And if possible, appearance change when items are equipped to them. Maybe not too flashy, but just so they all don't look the same.
Think that's really necessary though? I was happy just getting the merc from Act 2 with fanaticism. Didn't even really pay attention to his name. I'd just give him a good pike or something (hopefully uniques to use - I'm sure I did).
Same goes with people who gave zon mercs a Windforce or whatever they hand extra of.
It'd be cool to be able to do that but ehh...

In D2, more often than not, my mercs survivability and dps was better than my own. Usually took the Act 2 guy with the +defense aura which gave him buttloads of armour
