The build I'm speaking of is a pure Energy Twister wizard. Back when RoS made LL useless I thought about a way to heal without it. As a victim of the CM craze my first thought was doing something with Energy Twister.
The high proc coefficient combined with LoH and the new shield mechanic sounded promising, especially when you consider, that you need to survive in melee range in order for the twisters to hit and deal reliable damage. Also APoC would be useful again.
Now all that isn't necessarily true anymore - Shields activate on cast, the proc coefficient of ET has been nerfed and with it APoC/LoH. Still I tested the combination I thought of and it works surprisingly well. Also the parallels to the Tornado Stormer druid back in D2 made me feel nostalgic. I just had to write something and when I start writing...I have to finish writing^^
"But...u know twister is crap, right?" Well, yeah it's no Archon but performs surprisingly well on T6. That was true before 2.1 and will be even more after 2.1:
Energy Twister Weapon damage increased from 1000% to 1525% Skill Rune - Raging Storm Weapon damage increased from 1935% to 3200%
Energy Twister "Mistral Breeze": Reduced cost and cold damage, that slows and so is letting the twister hit more often. Also it makes possible to get some more damage out of the passive skills through the use of "Cold Blooded"
Black Hole: Which rune you use is completely up to. I prefer the damage plus of "Absolute Zero" over the increased safety against elites of "Event Horizon". A compromise would be "Spellsteal". Most important is that you pull the mobs together, so the twisters hit more monsters and proc more often.
Magic Weapon "Deflection": Generates a shield when you cast a spell. Due to us being very near to monsters a quite useful rune. Can give a lot of defensive potential if you build around it (high mitigation) which you should do either way because of LoH (which gets buffed in 2.1!)
Energy Armor: The offensive choice is "Pinpoint Barrier", defensive as usual "Prismatic Armor". Up to T4 you could also use Storm Armor with "Shocking Aspect"to gainanother source of damage.
Teleport: Same here, use what rune you made the best experiences with. I really like "Fracture" to get a bit of air in tough fights and the Mirror Images (cast your equipped skills - e.g Frost Nova or Slow Time or..something) but "Safe Passege" for damage reduction or "Calamity" to catch elites are totally valid choices too. Either way you need a skill to get out of the action, there are some situations which you just can't tank. If you play HC I suggest using "Illusionist" if you aren't already doing it.
Sooo, that leaves us with one unoccupied skill slot. Boring but good nonetheless is "Sparkflint" for some more dps and maybe an additional meteor (in case of 4piece Tals). Hydra gets buffed and seems to actually contribute some dps, so you could think about that with a "Serpents Sparker". Or some support via Diamond Skin, Slow Time, Mirror Images (thanks for pointing me in direction of Mansons Guide, you can do some amazing stuff with those images :o). Maybe even steal from another build and use Archon as the secret weapon it ought to be.
Blur: Keeps what it is promising. Multiplicative with the reduction of armor and resistance. No way around it in T5/T6.
Elemental Exposure: If you deal at least to elemental types of damage (which you usually do - Thunderfury, arcane runes of Black Hole, damage on your weapon) - get it. Otherwise Cold Blooded is better..
Cold Blooded: After the second hit 10% more damage. Since the debuff gets applied after the first attack I'd choose EE over it, if you deal at least two elemental damage types.
Audacity: 15% are tempting but 15 yards isn't that much. If you are feeling safe being in that distance while fighting elites - maximize your edps and go for it
Astral Presence: I called it a transition skill in an earlier version but it really isn't. Just depends on your equipment and the chosen ET rune. Get it if you run out of AP on single mobs or small groups of mobs.
Illusionist: You need to know that the 15% life applies to the damage you would receive not the damage you actually receive. This means you can completely absorb the damage with shields but your cool downs still reset. Great passive, first choice (ehm second after Blur^^) if you don't feel safe sticking to monsters..
The only thing you really need is 6-8 APoC. The rest of the equipment doesn't matter that much. If you got a legacy stormcrow or source with 8-10 APoC laying around - good, it will make your life easier against single bosses. But! it definitely isn't required to play this build (as you can see in my vid). Some LoH is recommended as well, Paragon can take care of that.
Strangely the Tal helm isn't a wizard hat (and it should be, nothing reminds me more of Diablo mages than that hideous purple set), Aughilds of course isn't either. So there aren't that much helmets left to get APoC. I guess our best bet would be a Storm Crow with rerolled %Lightskill. The missing Vita doesn't matter when you reach around 400-450k life without it. Also some LoH.
Another option is "The Magistrate". Yes it is rare and yes the frost nova doesn't help that much but combined with "Serpent Sparker", the 2.1 buffs to Hydra and the "Bone Chill" rune (33% more damage vs frozen and chilled enemies) you gain direct as well as indirect damage.
Last there's Pride's Fall. Five seconds, really? I've said it countless times (not in this forum^^) - keep it for switching in group play but don't expect to not get hit for five seconds solo. Too unreliable.
Armor: Even without the set bonus Tal Rashas armor is clearly BiS. Five primary rolls are just too good.
Amulet: Whatever Cold, CC, CD, Int amulet you can get. Alternatively an Ess of Johan but when was the last time you saw one that rolled decent?
Offhand: Either Winter Flurry or Tal Orb. First is one is a lot harder to find, so you'll probably use Tals.
Weapon: The infamous Thunderfury. The Proc is strong, triggers EE and meteors, no chance for Azurewrath. A contender is Serpents Sparker when you run Hydra. Yeah sadly not much diversity here.
Gloves: Frostburns, if they would actually exist. Till then use whatever legendary gloves you like. Gloves of Worship for example or T&T with Hydra.
Pants+Boots: Either Captain Crimsons for Ressourcecostreduction oder Blackthornes. Like Aughilds in small with some useful LoH. Hexing Pants are also an option.
Belt: Tals for set bonuses or the usual suspects. Harrington for swichting, Witching Hour, String of Ears. Two latter ones get even more interesting since Greater Rifts don't have any clickables in them.
Rings: RoRG/SoJ or Unity for solo play. The usual.
Shoulders + Bracers: Aughilds. Of course Strongarms (everything that moves monsters = knockback in case you didn't know) ar a contender again but I like the nice offensive/defensive balance you get wth Aughilds. Reaper's Wraps sound good on paper but I'll have to play some 2.1 to see if there are still enough health globes dropping.
To Tal or not to Tal
4piece meteors are working quite well with twisters. Since you need some time to ramp up your damage with them an initial burst really helps. Also cold builds can easily integrate different elemental types of damage and there aren't many must have item. The only thing you really need is a helm and a source with APoC, Tal fits well into that. Now with Harrington gone for Greater Rifts it's even easier.
Conclusion: You don't need it but it's nice to have and easy to get. Highly recommended is the 3piece bonus though.
Movement Speed to 25%, Rest Int or max AP if you feel you need it (I don't)
CC > CD > CDR > IAS
Allres > Armor > %Life, need at least 350-450k
LoH > Ressourcecostreduction > AreaDamage
Interesting to see you use the Tornadoes. I have to ask though. How does it do compared to fire/arcane builds with decent gear. On the official forums someone had a somewhat lengthy post about how bad the damage of the tornadoes is. I kind of hope for a buff to this skill.
it's a bit of a hassle against single monsters (only when you don't use legacy items)but deals decent damage against everything else (ive seen 16-19mil ticks). Still can't compete with the burst damage of the usual Archon builds but tbh I didn't expect it to. More of a safe, slower alternative to a pure AT build for solo play.
So if you're looking for efficiency you'll be better off with other builds but if you are bored and looking for a new build, that can handle T6then try tornados, you might like it. Bit of a bonus are the curious questions in public games^^
btw I had to use IE without AdBlock to be able to post again on dfans (Opera doesn't work, don't ask me why) and it's hell, honor my sacrifice by responding
i feel with you - diablofans has the worst forum software i have ever seen, but it doesn't seem to annoy so many people, so nothing is done. the forum software mmochampion uses is far better for example. i don't really get it, as both are curse sites.
Looks like your build will become even more viable come the update. Especially with channel builds becoming LESS viable (see also: stupid and sad changes) you may be hitting the next trend curve for any seeking a non-fire build.
We'll see how good Firebirds is though. Why Blizz wants so much emphasis on Fire across all classes I have no idea.
yeah, AT and Disintegrate with Archon were in a good place. A counterpart to Mirrorball/Fire Archon.
Have to correct me. I think they are three ways you could play Twister:
- cold rune for lesser cost (fire rune with cinder gives you even less cost but it's so glassy..and so fire^^)
- lightning rune with lightning signature spell (Living Lightning imo) for better ressource management - additional, "free" APoC procs via signature. Probably not worth the damage loss...that shitty lightning bolt -.-
- Raging Storm (2 Twister = 1 Storm, so the rune now finally deals the most damage out of all. Also the first twister ticks for some time before it merges with the second one). This I can imagine only works with a monk or some other reliable way of pulling monsters together. Else you'll run out of AP pretty easy.
I'll have to try those out in greater rifts. Probably tomorrow since Germany is playing vs USA this evening
