Hi, fellow wizards. Like many, I am in the process of gathering the Vyr and Tal sets for an archon build.
I currently have all Tal pieces and Vyr legs/gloves, and I've been looking for Vyr's chest (without much luck) instead of the boots, because I didn't want to let go of my Ice Climbers.
Has anyone made the jump from Ice Climbers to Vyr's? How have you dealt with the loss of freeze/jail immunity?
It just takes time getting used to. I run Ice climbers on my barb + wd so whenever i go back to my wiz i forget that i am not immune to frozen anymore so i have to spend a little while to adjust.
Overall it's not really noticable as a wizard in my opinion because i ALWAYS have teleport on my skill bar. And when you are in archon form obviously you got teleport anyway so it's really easy to avoid frozen. Jailer will still catch you and damage you no matter what but you can break out of it with teleport. Since they removed the pandemonioum rift with the annoying gates, ice climbers are even less needed imo.
So in short, get over it and use Vyr boots because if you don't, you'd have to use Vyr chest which is inferior to Tal's chest in every way unless you are going for a fire build and decide to use magefists. Good luck.
I've never seen Ice Climbers, but in my opinion they're not worth it. If you get decent crowd control reduction, and if you're either not playing melee or you're playing with Teleport, even a slowbrain like me can avoid dying from Frozen 99% of the time.
I wanted Ice Climbers for a long time, but now I don't care too much for them anymore. Vyr Boots, Illusory Boots, Captain Crimson's, even Blackthorne's for set bonus (believe it or not) are better in my book.
Still gathering gear, right now I have the Blackthornes bonus and Ice Climbers....
I've never managed to fit the 4p BT bonus (with RoRG) in any build. Too much dps and toughness loss for mostly avoidable effects - which, in a way, loops back to my original question :-)
Illusory > Ice Climbers. It's usually not frozen or jailer that kills me but rather a bunch of leaping/teleporting/fast mobs manage to completely surround me. Now it's even better because you can walk through wallers. It's also easier to farm.
Are you playing HC? If not, just use whatever gives the highest DPS and toughness will come in its wake.
Just because dying doesn't have the same consequences in SC as in HC, doesn't mean that the vast majority of people won't want to get the best build they can. Dying isn't "fun", even if it isn't permanent. No one wants to go back to the vanilla days of ressing five times to zerg an elite pack down little by little. Going purely for damage at the cost of all defense is asinine.
To OP: What build are you actually playing? Arcane or Fire?
If you're playing Fire, you have to ask yourself if Vyrs is even worth it. In order to use it you have to give up "atleast" 20% fire dmg through either gloves or chest, and possibly even both, along with whatever legendary effect you might have from boots+legs (hexing pants, 2 set firebirds, Pox faulds, whatever floats your boat really). All you really gain is -20 sec cd on the archon, and 22% bonus dmg while in Archon - issue being that the damage you gain is basicly already lost through losing your glove or chest spot.
is -20 sec archon really worth it for the loss of 20% outside-archon dmg and legs/boots affixes?

Ice Climbers are very comfortable, but I might have been relying on them a bit too much

I'm trying to gear for an arcane build, though, to try Vyr + Tal + MLW, which is where the Vyr boots/IC comparison kicks in.
