I've been lurking around on this forums for a while now. Gotten many tips from knowledgeable people going though these threads. There's a lot of threads where fellow Wizards ask for help with gearing. I was thinking we could have a thread where we gather all of this. Together. A thread where we can ask for help. Gearing can be quite hard, and it can be devastating wasting millions of gold on gear that are under par.
For myself. I started out with my wizard. I was pretty tired of kiting with blizzard+hydra (i wanted to just blow things up with my magic). So, when I got my girlfriend to play D3 i leveled a barb and felt how ridiculously strong. I geared him well. But i got bored. Barb is easy mode. And i kinda felt bad for my wizard I used to love so much. So, a couple of days ago i said to myself: "fuck it. Loki, you super amazing wizard of doom, you deserve godlike gear". I sold my barb gear. Now I want to gear my wizard. 'Cause wizards are awesome.
So I'll start out first in this thread. I got about a billion gold and need some advice on what pieces I should replace. Here's my armory. (I'm a cmww wiz, but sometimes I just farm p1 with archon with the same gear)
I haven't played wizard for a long time, but these are my thought:
I just got a cheap stormcrow 'cause I needed the loh and apoc. I feel I need a chant source with apoc so I can use a better helmet. But the question then: from what piece should I get the loh?
To raise my EHP in the most effective way is to get a stronger Tal Rashas. With about the same amount of int but with ~250 vit or high all res.
Both my Ice Climbers and Vile Wards are pretty shit as well. But I use them for now 'cause they're decent and self-found.
CMWW and Archon doesn't really go well together with the same gear. It could work, but I always feel like I'm better off switching half of the equipment.
For CMWW gear, Loroese covered anything you could ever think of in his perfect guide.
In terms of more general gear questions, it's always a trade-off (replace item X, should I get item Y, and so on) - and it's exactly what I tried to discuss in my guide, the benefits and drawbacks of certain pieces of gear. Regarding your LoH question, the answer is simply "amulet". It can roll up to 959, but since you already have decent LoH on your pants any value 400+ is more than enough. Once you have that, you can get yourself a nice Mempo :-) But keep in mind, if you get rid of Storm Crow you need a new offhand (preferably a new Chantodo's) with APoC, and that ain't cheap either.
Getting more EHP is gonna be expensive. You already mentioned boots and shoulders - don't think they're that bad, and they also don't have that much more potential to boost EHP. Of course you could get a Tal Rasha with allres, but then we're talking about a few millions... in general many of this gear like Lacuni's and WH comes pretty cheap nowadays, but you lose a lot of EHP and unless you can live with that (or afford the additional EHP) you need alternative gear for EHP-heavy fights where it's more about survival and less about DPS. I have a pair of extremely EHP-boosting bracers and even an old EHP-heavy belt, and of course for ubers you really don't want to wear that Hellfire Ring; you could get a typical CMWW ring with IAS+CC, but also throw in some additional vitality, allres and armor.
I've upgraded my OH with apoc, gotten a nice yellow ring and a new tal rasha chest for more EHP. I'm just below the 2.73 break point, but will be way above with a new amulet, which I think I'll invest in next. Or what do you guys think?
The guides you've mentioned are GREAT, and I've read them over and over again. I was hoping that we could use this as a gearing advise-thread, but I seem to have failed.
If you need more LoH, get LoH. Survivability always comes first. Once your build works and you're doing fine, you can start caring about your DPS. Dropping crit damage on amulet is perfectly fine for CMWW.
and one more question. How does diamond skin absorb work? Does it scale more with all res and armor? Like.. it absorb x amounts of damage. I assumee you take much less damage with high all res and low hp. If this is so-- maybe I should trade som of my hp for all res?
While I haven't actually tested it, i'm sure diamond skin works AFTER damage reduction. After all, every monster in Inferno hits for more than 20,000 damage base, and would destroy diamond skin in one hit, making is worthless.
My thoughts on hp vs all resist (or armor, which gets a bigger boost from energy armor). Higher damage reduction makes your LoH and Life Steal work better, while pure hp only lets you last longer. Once you have enough hp to take a couple hits while diamond skin refreshes, armor/resist is the better method to increase EHP assuming equal budgets. Less damage taken = less to heal through LoH/LS = you stay at full hp longer.
Of course, it is always possible for me to be wrong.
Yes, DS applies after damage mitigation. Because of that you don't really need any more than 35-40k HP as a CMWW, except possibly for Mag/SK fight, otherwise damage mitigation is much more useful than having higher HP. As Zeyn said, more mitigation makes your DS work better and stacking mitigation over HP makes LoH and Life Steal more useful.
Basically, I want to be able to do mp2 by the time the patch comes out, both for the exp boost and any key farming/crafting drops. I can easily do MP1 with my gear, but I can't quite make mp2 work. Right now I have about 20m to spend on upgrades, possibly more. Any advice would be appreciated.
For my CM build, I switch out helm for stormcrow, bracers for a yellow crit & EHP, gloves for crit & speed, hellfire for crit & speed, and offhand for APoC.
Obviously, I need a better hellfire ring. The other slots I've looked at could be big dps upgrades but kill my EHP, or visa versa. Or they are just financially out of my reach atm.
Get a better amulet and gloves to start. Once you can afford it, replace one of your rare rings with a similar Zuni Pox. The 130 int bonus and guaranteed 60+ resistance is nothing to laugh at.
I need some more vit for sure and I'd just like my damage to be higher ovreall but I'm not really sure what to go for. I've got about 40mil I'd be willing to spend right now. I also have a Skorn and Andy helm that I switch for Archon farming.

Thanks a lot for the advice. Even with all these I guess it would only bring me to around 160K DPS. Would like to know if I was doing something wrong on my current gear set up.
you have to ask yourself a question on what build to go. It's different gear for different specs. Are you running archon? Cm wiz? Just gonna slam meteors on low mp build?
The I suggest you spec for cm wiz. It's a safe way to get the meteor spamming going.
1: you need more apoc. At least two pices with apoc.
2: more attack speed. The minimum APS you want to reach is 2.51. Then try reach for 2.74.
3: more res and loh

A trifecta one with loh is out of reach. And if I drop crit dmg for loh, my dps will decrease significantly. So my question is: loh or crit dmg?

*edit* got a decent trifecta amulet cheap so i reached the 2.73 breakpoint, and I got a cheap cc, loh, ias, int ring.

Let us see your archon gear so we can help you out !!
Hi-jack it all you want. I made the thread so we could have an own thread for gear-helping.
I wish to have above 200k unbuffed DPS but I am not sure how to start.
Here is my profile. Any advice would be thankful.

You're at 134K unbuffed. Hmm.
