I think the main issue is the build. It looks like an Archon build without Archon, or a CMWW build without DS and an AP DPS Spell. I think the DPS is too low to sustain Archon at MP5 so maybe try looking at Jaetch's high MP archon build for starters. To use a CMWW build a lot of gear would need to be replaced so your friend would practically have to rebuild from scratch. To go CMWW, I recommend looking at my guide for build and gearing ideas. Alternatively, there's a compandium of various builds on the official wizard forums so feel free to direct your friend there, though I haven't tried any of them because I only use Archon for xp/loot and CMWW for keys/ubers.
Actual gear upgrades will depend someone on spec used, but in general, to farm higher MP you need a lot of survivability in the form of Armor and Resistances. More resistances is probably the first place to start.
Loroese is correct on the build.....however there is a bigger problem.
He has 200 All Resists. 500 LOH. LOH isnt the worst i've seen, but coupled with 200 resists, he will die a lot. Than add in what Loroese said, his build does not have a high proc rate therefore he will not proc his 500 LOH enough anyway to keep alive.
Get 400 AR minimum, 800 LOH, and change the build.
If you cant afford the gear to go CMWW, try Living Lightning until you get the APOC, crit and APS to support WW.

Don't forget resist from Int, which is another 200 or so. That's a total of 400 AR which isn't terrible, but I recommend something like 500-550 with 3500 armor, buffed. With more armor you can use less resists but for CMWW you want a decent amount of both so you can use Shocking Aspect for increased dps, as opposed to using Energy Armor to reach the recommended AR and Armor. Also, that assumes a high attack speed, which I think is also lacking. Those EHP numbers are for 2.5+APS.
He's dirt poor too, but starting with resists will be where we go first. I introduced him to the CMWW build, and he liked it, but didn't think he was doing enough damage.
That's how he came to the skills he has, and well, it sucks. I've told him to build one way or the other, but he prefers his in between for some reason. Thanks to all for the input, we will get to work!
If he's set on the build, lower the MP until death isn't much of an issue. Then you can try raising the MP as gear improves. From an efficiency standpoint, farming for xp and loot is best done on MP0-2. Even with a 200k dps Archon build that can clear MP3-4, maybe 5, I get the best xp/hour at MP0-2.
Well, quite frankly tell him he shouldn't be more concerned about his DPS than about his survivability, because when he's dead he can't do much DPS ;-)
If he likes his build that much and doesn't want to change it that's fine; unless you go full CMWW for group support, I haven't really found a good wizard spec that works well in groups regardless of gear. And I like unconventional builds, if someone's reluctant to go with the cookie cutter stuff I admire that. However, he should definitely switch Glass Canon with Blur, that will boost his survivability by a good amount for a start.

What upgrades can he make on the cheap to make MP5 easier?
