Magic Missile and Energy Twister are some really crappy skills. I honestly can't see myself ever using them. MAYBE if I wanted a kite build I'd use split missiles for an AoE slow... but I can't see myself using missiles over lightning in a normal build.
Explosion seems fairly crappy as well due to the cooldown and delay. I may give it a chance though.
i agree with zealot, i probably wouldnt use energy twister . . . but it can be used skillfully. have it heatseek with your signature spell and have the passive with arcane slow . . . it might be good. we wont know until we try it out.
Personally just cant see myself ever using slow time or magic missle (or any of its runes) and thats about it for me. everything else has potential imo.
So many of the ones I thought I would never use are still in my trash bin:
Penetrating magic missile Disintegrate pierces all the time, ya it uses ap, but still....
Energy Twister Damage over 6 seconds is just too low.
Unstable Anomaly Anyone who plans on being low enough on health to use it, has already failed.
Ice Armor Energy armor has higher defense than crystalize, forgot about this one for a while
Meteor ap cost too high, and I don't want to have to get everything for ap just to use it.
All AT except DB Death blossom with arcane dynamo if it holds throughout casting would be destructive
Power Hungry Not my bag, i will use low ap use spells, however, if someone is using energy armor, this might change.
Conflagration/ice passives I can think of better passives to use, like blur
Mirror Images Not going to use in inferno and watch them die in a second when I can use simulacrum. I'm sure there will be a ton of people using mirror images in normal.
Glass Cannon Negatives as high as positives, it is a middle of the road passive that will help you as much as hurt.
Temporal Flux Grey area, could be useful, but if an enemy is running away from you that much... are you really in trouble? Going for Slow Time more, it'll save me from projectiles also.
I too will give explosion a chance, but due to the delay and cooldown that Ruppgu talked about I have my doubts.. I didn't always doubt it..... it is in question mark territory. I used to not like Arcane dynamo but if it works with channeled spells I'll use it, even more so if it works with shield spells
The only skill ill never use is Mirror Images, compared to other defensive skills they seem terrible, especially on higher difficultys.
On another note; i dont get the critique of Energy Twister, it may be random but when there is 20+ demons infront of you that doesnt really bother me. It was my favourite skill when i tryed the open beta, and i tryed all unlocked skills and runes on all characters. The usage of it is clearly meant to be when there is swarms of enemys and comparing it to Blizzard wich in my opinion is of the same usage. It costs 10 less arcane power and does 150% more weapon damage over the same time. Clearly Blizzard has much higher area of effect, but with energy twister you can send out 3+ and it will pretty much clear huge areas of weaker demons.
theres also a 2 runes that dont make energy twister random. one of them makes them in place the other heatseeks with with your signature spell. for its arcane power cost . . . it seems pretty good to me. but honestly i probably wouldnt use it in my 6 skill slots . . . just defending blizzards reasoning on making the skill.
As long as energy twister damage is calculated over 6 seconds it'll still suck, forever and ever compared to the other spells... if they don't have it, they need to add some Special Widgets And Tactics to the spell planning
* Give energy twister a chance to knock back enemy, then it'll be slightly defensive 100% chance it'll knock back
enemy a little, 50 % chance it'll knock back enemy twice as hard, 25% chance it'll go Bruce Lee and
knock back enemy into the other room. This will give a person a reason to cast it over and over again.
Tiny addition, that comes to 25% small push, 50 med push, 25 large push but of course the small push
happens all the time...
* Damage over 3 seconds but same % as it is now
* Make it Electrical it is a storm..... so paralysis works with it.
* Give it a larger area of effect and make it capable of redirecting projectiles (so if a monster fires a stream of projectiles and you fire storm it'll ricochet off the storm.)
They do this.. it'll make the spell far more wanted.
Being able to clear weaker demons isn't going to make people want to use ET for Inferno Holjas they will use signature spells instead......... which cost 0 ap.
I guess that depends on the person, i will use it, i think. But then i have this image of Inferno, that lots of times you just get swarms and swarms of "lesser demons" against you. For smaller packs of bigger demons ill have my disinigrate ready and for elite groups is where i imagine archon will shine.
But for thoose times your just overwhelmed by demons i cant fine any spamable skill that seems more effective then Energy Twister
Split Magic Missile even overleveld and overgeared I still wasn't 1-hit killing stuff in the beta.. 50% is so freaking bad it almost hurts, I think it's going to be absurdly useless in Inferno unless there's a mod we don't know that gives like "+x% damage to "each" Magic Missile"
For me it's Magic Weapon or Familiar. I'd rather assign the slot to a more active skill... it always feels like I'm "losing" a slot to something more valuable. Guess that's why Blizzard decided on 6 skills max
Arcane orb is better than ET, (my preference is celestial orb) it'll do more damage than energy twister and faster, same cost... easier to direct...
You cant just say Arcane Orb is bether then Energy Twister, or that Celestial Orb does more damage then Energy Twister, because it depends on the situation and the monster density. In one scenario; lets say you run into a demon parade Celestial Orb will be much more effective then Energy Twister. But in another scenario Energy Twister will outshine Celestial Orb

If you can spam a few of them like D2 pre 1.09, then it will be useful.

P.S. Emergy Twister is completely useless though DONT USE IT!
P.S.S. DONT USE IT!!
A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
* Energy Twister
* Magic Weapon
* Ice Armor
* Storm Armor (except, maybe, for the Shock Aspect rune)

I understand everything but magic weapon. Yeah... it's boring but it's a good skill for a build. +15% damage to all skills is good.
