So I am near 100% sure (finaly!) that I will be rolling Wizard at launch! I cant wait!
I just thought I would see if anyone has any thoughts about Chain Lightning Runed Electrocute.
Everytime I go to build a Wizard build, I start off thinking "Ok, this time I won't use Electrocute" and everytime, I feel like not using Electrocute would just be silly, especially the Chain Lighting Rune.
Its spamable at Weapon Swing Speed. It hits 6 Targets for 80% damage each for a total of 480% damage. And, its free to cast.
I just feel like I have to be missing somthing. Its such an insanely powerful spell.
Not only is it free, and assuming you have 6 targets grouped together (lets face it, that will happen almost all the time) does it deal 480% weapon damage, but it also can be cast "over the head" of monsters on the front line, leting you hit monsters in the back.
For the longest time I figured there had to be a missing "Does reduced damage for each monster hit" but I'm not seeing that anywhere.
Of course, I want to use this spell and cant wait to use it, but doesn't this seem out of this world OP?
How is having a spell that hits 6 targets for 80% weapon damage, that can be cast behind the front line, that really doesn't even need to be targeted (becaue it will jump) equal to a spell that fires 3 shots, for 50% damage each.. that can't go over the front of the enemy line?
(I'm not emplying all spells need to be equal, because of course they don't. And also, of course, we have never used Chain Lighting so this is only speculation based off the Calculator.)
You are not alone Snowhammer I too find it impossible to believe someone wouldn't be using electrocute and I too favor chain lightning though mainly because of chance of using critical mass with it, and because I used a mousepad for D1, D2, and probably D3 as well... and also due to the thing you said about it not having to be targeted, anything else seems stupid.
While I see your reasoning you must keep a few things in mind:
Certain builds (arcane heavy / fire heavy, as examples) may rely on other signatures.
You can swap up the electric pulse one into fire to create a constant 15% extra damage on 3 targets ideally
You can also use arcane missle's variants to get a slow using arcane's passive slow (can go for 3 targets or 1 big target)
In addition you might wish to build around one target using arcane missiles (with minor aoe for adds such as arcane orb) as a boss specific build
And if you really wish you could also make a close-range wizard using spectral blade + wave of force + ray of frost runed into aoe
Anyway, just my own thoughts on the variants. I usually consider chain lightening the most viable build for a general hack&slash through content build, but I can see lots of bonuses in the others depending on game style and goals.

Hey Keelyn,
I certainly agree with you that there are other "cool" combinations, and I can't wait to try them out.. Electrocute just seems so over the top.
AP regen would work realy well with some of the other signature spells, but even those, Electrocute does 1 per target hit, so 3 if you hit all targets. Thats quite a bit (1 less than missle) and you don't have to wait for the missle to travel and it always hits.
Electrocute just seems awesome.. can't wait to use it! I just wonder if it might be one of those spells that blizzard is talking about when they say "If everyone uses the same thing, we haven't done our job".
We shall see though! Maybe I'm over estimating it somehow.
I'm doing the same thing with my wizard. Electrocute with Chain Lightning will be my main skill. I'll be using it with the Passive Paralysis: Lightning damage dealt has a 5% chance to stun for 3 seconds. Combine that with the six hits which means you have a 30% chance of one of those bolts stuning the enemy. That + Storm Armor = nothing moves! Plus I will be using the Power of the Storm Rune on the Storm Armor to reduce the arcane power cost of everything by 3 and Galvanizing Ward passive to make it last longer.
Well its 80% dmg single target, and up to 480% wpn dmg in mult-target situation. You are trying to compare one and the other, and they are just not the same thing. I think they buffed spectral blade recently to like 134% wpn dmg w/o runes, and its not capped on the max dmg either, though it obviously has other limitations.

Paralysis is terrible....a 5% chance, comon....are you going to bank on that to do anything? Even with chain lightning, you would have to cast multiple Electrocutes on an entire group of mobs just to paralyze ONE of them.
Its so bad its almost beyond explanation.

You are forgetting Storm Armor which will be shocking evrything left and right, plus galvanizing Ward which will extend its duration.

Storm armor only casts if they hit you. Thats kind of what you don't want, and its still only 1 more chance to proc. Assuming there are 6 mobs whaling on you, that still might only double the chance it stuns. Its still terrible.
Maybe with lightning hydra I could see it...even then it seems meh.

Still 1/20 is unreliable on any scale.
Would rather have a constant slow effect on all enemies than RNG stun on one.
But that's me and I haven't even played the beta so...

Storm armor just says, ranged and melee attackers. It does not say if they hit you or the damage is reflected. This skill isn't Thorns. It works much more like Holy Shock.
A 1/20 chance to stun a mobs is absolute and utter trash. It might have a use in PvP, but certainly not in PvE.

Indeed, it sais "ranged and melee attackers". It's only dealing damage to the enemies that are attacking you, not the ones that are moving towards you. It is a thorns effect, not a damage aura.
I think that Storm Armor is going to be something that decreases in effectiveness the further you get into the levels of difficulties. I think the damage output of this could become impressive, but the damage that would need to be taken to get to those levels would be impressive in the wrong way.
30% damage reduction after each hit.
It was included in the tooltip in the early few patches but removed somehow. But I tested in the patch 14 and confirmed.

Which would be better chain lightning or lightning blast rune effect? Chain lighting: 6 enemies struck at once or Lighting blast: pierces first enemy and also travels on?

all AOE attacks have the possibility to being AWSOME but against 1 strong target its not as good, equally with your chain lightning thingy
thats just how the game works
Only thing was, damage was like 1 - 4000, so ya know. It's better this time around.

True, But Siesmic Slam isn't free to cast, and you can't cast it over the top of the Guys in front to pretty much any location on the screen.
