The spell has it's pro's and con's like any other, it deals a decent amount of damage fast, accurately and effectively. As with all skills some are more suited for some scenarios than others, on the downside there's the fact that you're immobile for the duration of the spell, which leave you vulnerable. So as for the whole being a "1 hit ko" button, I doubt that will be the issue, knowing Blizzard they won't release a class that is so OP (not after the whole DK issue in WoW).
As for the design and feel of the spell, I'd have to agree that it does look a bit overdone, in my opinion it would help to slow down the graphics of the spell, but that's just my two cents.

First of all, you are talking about PvP balance, and they alredy said they aim is to make it fun for PvM.
But, even for pvp i think is ok...remember its a channeled spell, this means that, even thru it can hit you instantly when you click, it doesnt do much dmg unless you hold it over the enemy. So if enemys move fast its hard to realy make a lot of dmg with it.
Also, while you are channeling you have to stand still and not cast anything else, wich makes you a easy target for the enemy, specialy when there are more than 1.
And if it comes too be too op for pvp, i think theyll just lower its dmg on the arena, but changing the way it works would be too lame in PvM...so it shouldnt happen...since the main part of the game is PvM.
I think that Disintegrate looks better in the newer footage, where it is two separate beams coming from the wizard's hands and not just one big beam (I'm not sure if this is from a rune or if the look of the spell has been changed). I think this spell and Ray of Frost look fun to use, and they do help set the D3 wizard apart from the sorcerer from D1 and sorceress from D2 who used more projectiles.
I think the concept of disintegrate is really cool, and looks cool as well. The concept of the mage being so in control of his/her power that she can create a beam that follows her will exactly is just amazing. It's just the type of fantastic power display that is so Diablo in my opinion.
Edit: Also we haven't seen how it looks with runes, so that's another huge thing to consider.

actually i thought it was very similar to inferno and what not, but thats just my opinion

That double beam is a rune.
As far as OP goes, I think it should be usable, but not OP. Along with Ray of Frost it makes up the aimed DoT. You'll only be able to get monsters in straight lines, and some could move out of it (unless snared). Also recall that the damage of the beam decreases (by 20%) along the line after it passes through each consecutive monster. A monster at the end of a beam that had already passed through 3 monsters would only be taking 40% damage.

The final test of the Serpent's Form takes place in "The Pit of 12 Vipers." The initiates are not told about the 13th.

Just a quick bit on the % less per monster, it won't technically be 40% damage on that last monster, because each reduction is of the whole. So the math would be say 100 damage, the next monster takes -20% which would be 80, but minus another 20% for another monster would actually be 20% from the last target, or 20% of 80, or about 64 dmg. then take 20% of 64 off, to be about 51 damage.
Edit: This of course occurring if blizzard is using the same math I've seen them use on pretty much all their other games.

because ie they are spells that you hold down
That's a good point, I didn't think of that. They definitely could have a similar feel gameplay wise, like a long-range inferno. I was thinking mostly just in terms of the visuals as they define a character class - we definitely haven't had any laser beams before in Diablo.

They are similar, but I always felt that inferno/arctic blast were way too slow and weak to be viable. I really like how disintegrate/ray of frost are so fast, and really look forward to trying them both out with every rune combination.
But I think my issue with Disintegrate is in the way the spell feels. From a design standpoint, swinging your cursor around in circles, and having Disintegrate do the exact same thing feels awkward really. How does your character pivot that fast while firing a huge laser? Seems unrealistic.
I think it would look a lot better if it were more like a "whip", as in the beam follows the cursor with a slight delay, and the laser wasn't so easily controlled. Like what maka said in the post above, it looks too much like a 2d shooter at this point. The laser seems very effortless to move.
dude welcome to like every game of diablo, you point your cursor and use your spell. Is it unrealistic to be able to suddenly do a 180 and fire a magic missle behind you? of course it is no one can turn that fast, but do you want a delay in turning your character too? I believe you are too caught up in the fact that you, and i'm pretty sure its you and like 4 other people, just don't like the spell. Its cool tho, just use one of the other 19 spells =D
And also as stated before, it damages in pulses even tho the spell looks constant, its not every .1 second it has a delay itself to hit. If you are gettin chased in the arena LOS, problem solved. Also means the wiz is standing there defenseless
Watching someone wildly swing around with their pewpew disintegrate laser is pretty goofy. For aesthetic reasons swiveling speed needs to be slowed as a way of denoting the fact that the player is firing off some powerful laser weapon. Buff the damage if needed.
And why is Ray of Frost a separate skill? It's the same thing as Disintegrate.
Come on, blizzard... talk about being lazy.... Turn Ray of Frost into a rune'd effect for disintegrate.
I'm fine with it, however, I agree the firing and aiming mechanics/animations could have been done better. It would have been better if the wizard's arms and hips easily swiveled at 150° and if you wanted to turn further the wizard would take a 40° step in that direction. However, I don't think Disintegrate's other functions should change, just the graphic... it should have been the same color as other Arcane spells.
It's not as easy as you're making it out to be. The major drawback to it is that you can't move while you're using it. All someone has to do (so easy in team arena or even 3+ arena) is teleport/jump/etc. onto the Wizard. I tried it, and it's worked on me during beta play. There is one exception to this, and it's that with a rune it becomes a cyclone around the immediate caster, in which case jumping a Wizard during casting would be a bad idea because the immediate area deals damage, but in this case it is no longer a ranged attack and the problem is moot.
As for the design and feel of the spell, I'd have to agree that it does look a bit overdone, in my opinion it would help to slow down the graphics of the spell, but that's just my two cents.
