After the effect ends, the skin explodes, dealing physical damage equal to a percentage of the damage absorbed to all nearby monsters (short-range AoE).
All magi are trained in defensive arts, since they cannot rely strictly on offense to stay alive in battle. Many Sorcerers have mastered various shields of ice, but the less adept Wizards have stumbled upon a new technique - encrusting their bodies with impervious arcane material. Although this "crust" is very demanding in terms of it's elemental cost, some Wizards have found a way to further it's uses. Upon impact, the arcane crust will absorb the force, and store it. As the force is increased, the shell will become over-saturated, and explode, causing the arcane shrapnel to tear through those around it's perimeter.
When socketed, Diamond Skin will absorb 25% of the damage caused by all attackers. After X amount of damage is absorbed, the Skin will explode, unleashing 100% of the damage absorbed to all nearby enemies as Arcane damage. This would be a great skill to have for a melee Wizard.

Diamond Mine - The Diamond armour will act as normal, however, when the diamond armour finally shatters, the wizard can pick up the diamonds and sell it for cash at the vendors lol
prismatic absorbtion - any spells that strike the wizard while diamond skin is active pass through as energy and are absorbed by the wizard increasing their damage by X% of the absorbed damage for X seconds.
(Obviously, all of these effects would be while the armor is active)
Prismatic Refraction - Spells you cast ignore the first X points of spell resistances.
Tectonic Plating - Enemies that attack the wizard while within X feet are slowed for 2 seconds.
Brittle Sheath - Whenever the wizard is affected by a stun, slow, or silence effect that effect is prevented and the armor explodes for X damage to all enemies within X feet.
Perpetual Resonance - When the wizard is targeted by a spell, the duration and absorption of Diamond Skin is reset (Note: this effect might also need to reduce the duration of Diamond Skin in order to stay balanced).
Diamondbody Form - Increase the wizard's melee damage and damage resistance by X% and increase the duration of Diamond Skin by X seconds.
The wizzard channels for a few x seconds, while channeling he absorbs ~90% of the dmg taken, after channeling the armor explodes and deals x base dmg + x% of the dmg absorbed to nearby enemies.
Crimson - Transforms into a fire shield, reducing the absorption but causing significant damage return to any melee attackers(absorption penalty is reduced and damage return is increased with rune level)
Indigo - Diamond Skin fractures summoning small diamond constructs to fight for you as damage is absorbed by the shield(Number of damage needed to summon a construct is reduced and damage dealt by constructs increases with rune level)
Obsidian - Diamond Skin repels any melee attacker knocking them back and giving a chance to stun when they land, also has a chance to repel projectiles(distance of knockback, chance to stun, and chance to repel projectiles increases with rune level)
Alabaster - After Diamond Skin takes a certain amount of damage, it shatters dealing a moderate amount of damage to nearby enemies and providing each nearby ally with a small diamond shield that absorbs damage from the next few attacks, at which time it too shatters dealing a small amount of damage in a frontal cone from the protected ally.(damage dealt by both shatters as well as damage absorption increases with rune level)
Golden - Increases absorption and duration of diamond skin, and reducing cost.(All effects are enhanced by rune level)
The one I can suggest, although I'm not sure what rune it would be, is that it takes damage but doesn't reduce damage, it just absorbs it and for every percent of your health you lose while it's active, you do another percent of damage. A "diamond cannon" mode for the armor, it makes you do more damage quickly, but at the cost of not actually providing defense. Obviously the damage stacking would reset, or have a time limit, i.e. how much damage you've taken in the last 10 seconds or something to prevent you from doing insane damage by healing yourself somehow.

obsidian rune- black diamond armor counter attacks incoming attackers. absorbs physical and reflects physical,base at 20 sec duration
crimson rune- chance to auto-proc when hit with physical, will be used before physical dmg is calculated, no cool down when auto-proc.
indigo rune- wizard controls plates of diamond to shield self or ally. diamond armor can be casted on ally characters. decrease cool down.
alabaster rune- diamond armor receives mirror attribute. reflects magic spells back at enemies, base at 10sec duration.
Indigo: X% chance to shot Magic Missile when struck
Obsidian: returns X% of damage when struck
Alabaster: don Diamond skin with absorb reduced by half on minions and allies in X radius
Golden: damage absorbed refills both resources
