Well, now that we know (for the most part) the basic idea of the Wizard talents...I figured I would get speculation started on what the first styles of builds are that people are going to try. {Here's the link to the Wizard talent trees}
It seems to me like the talents are divided up in ways that will support a real variety of playing styles. The first few that come to mind for me are:
1. AoE Blaster Caster - With spells like Meteor Swarm, Blizzard, Charged Bolt, Arcane Orb, and Acid Cloud, this arcanist is primed to blow large groups of enemies into smithereens. Some of the passive skills look to add damage to your base spells. Your basic ranged artillery.
2. Sniper/Trickster - A decent selection of ray style spells such as Electrocute, Ray of Frost, and Disintegrate seem to be where the real damage is at, however they will require more battlefield strategy to maximize their potential by lining up enemies. Teleport looks to be a serious staple of this build, as well as debuffs that slow monsters such as a few of the passive talents in the Wizard skill tree, and trickeration such as Mirror Image. The classic Arcane Trickster builds of D and D fame come to mind.
3. "Gish" or Warrior Mage - Another staple of D and D style gaming is the melee caster. A physically powerful character who relies on magic to enhance their melee combat abilities, this mage buffs up and throws down. It looks like Blizzard has catered to this style of play by including skills such as Arcane Armor, Damage Resistant, Weapon Mastery, Conjured Armor, Conjured Health, Magic Weapon, Magical Impact, Slowing Strikes, and Armor Piercing. On first glance, and knowing only what is listed thus far, this looks like it could be an extremely focused and powerful variation of the typical Wizard. Perhaps focusing on one or two offensive spells to fire off from range and trigger debuffs before closing to melee range, this build could be quite fun and powerful.
While it is too early to speculate, this is the internet, and this is a board devoted to rapid reaction regarding one of our favorite games....
What else do you guys see in terms of builds or ideas for focusing on certain talents and trees?
From the looks of it, the storm build is your blaster build. The Conjuring build is probably more of your melee build, and the arcane is blasting/utility. There is some overlap, but that's my take.
yeah this game is certainly going to be unique and a best of all time, now onto the builds..
pve,
points | name
1 | Charged Bolt
15 | Lightning Speed
1 | Storm Armor
15 | Power Armor
1 | Electrocute
15 | Improved Charged Bolt
15 | Storm Power
63 pts total at that tree, gonna head over to arcane. btw theres 2 static charges and yet they are both the same.. just gonna guess that was an error.
15 | Efficient Magics
1 | Slow Time
1 | Teleport
15 | Runic Might
95 pts total all together with(if they cap at 100) 5 pts remaining.. i really like the way they have it set up actually it allows you to max a great amount of skills, this build is mostly passive helping to increase the actives but i feel its a pretty good spec if you're gonna be runnin bosses for loot but yeah as i was saying i think its great they have the active skills cost 1 and then you use passives to help improve on them.(you're gear will also be putting towards that.) 1 last thing, i feel a cold sorc would be very good at the mid-higher levels so its something to look into.
okay now for pvp im gonna focus on arcane and conjure because i feel arcane is mostly the pvp tree and conjure has some nice things in there to take advantage of both pve/pvp.
pvp,
points | name
storm talents
15 | Lightning Speed
1 | Storm Armor
1 | Frost Nova
15 | Shattered Ice
arcane talents
1 | Magic Missle
15 | Arcane Power
15 | Penetrating Spells
15 | Arcane Armor
15 | Arcane Weakness
1 | Teleport
wow.. already 94 in this pvp build, while going thru this i found alot of useful skills for building pvp aswell for pve. my intent was going arcane/conjure but i found good skills worthy of pvp everywhere. i didn't include slow time because i felt it was more useful in chaotic situations where arcane distortion could be more useful.(not included in the build)
very interesting, i love the way everythings set up in the talent tree's and when maxing everything you can easily get carried away if you really want to spread it out..
edit.. one more thing i forgot was quests that reward skill points, so just for those added points a character can become really unique to what you want!
a nice mix of conjure and either storm or arcane talents seem like it would work very well. I'd probably try and focus on the aoe's like blizzard, along with a decent amount of armor/resistance abilities. Though a strong arcane wizard with the possibilities of multistrike seems to be pretty powerful too.
nice build but there is potentially way more powerful builds. Im thinking of going for arcane/storm but im extremely interested in the conjure tree and building a melee sorc. I willl have 2 try both after i try at least 2 classes.
All 3 trees seem pretty appealing to me, but I think arcane seems the best. Slow Time and Disintegrate. Conjure might be fun also. Storm seems like the obvious to go for.

You can't really speculate about builds yet since the last several tiers of skills are obscure to us at the moment. It is very likely that the last tier of each tree will carry the most powerful trick which could change the perspective entirely.

Actually it's been too early to speculate on almost any issue of D3 since the beginning of these forums. But that's what people like to do. So go ahead and make them crazy ass Wizard Builds. I guess it's a way to pass time since we won't be getting a demo for a loooong time.

If not ill go for the same thing only with a longbow. mmm flavor full arcane archer.
This class seems like an ungraded Sorc with some of WoW's Mage thrown in (the best bits of course)... In WoW/TBC I played a Frost mage for the logest time. I loved Frost control and frost AoE...
So I will probably make a Frost focused mage for PvE with what ever skills either help with passives or just help to reduce enemy resistances to frost etc...
IF their are any frost immune bosses then I will have some arcane spells probably to help negate that...
But yeah; that is how I will build my first mag... I mean wizard xD
Amen to the frost mage. Im going down that same road I think im gonna to lightning hydras though Im gonna do the tiniest into electricity to back my ice up for those with high immunities.

Definitely going to be my first character. To be honest I am looking forward to experimenting with a melee type caster, we'll see I suppose when the game comes out.
