Maybe.. but we still doesn't know how resource will work ! We know they want to put a Cooldown on teleport, but we don't know for attacking's spell, it's contradict the fact that Blizzard want the wizard be a blasty caster who never stop to take a breath.
Ooh! What about a balance system? If you cast arcane spells for a while your resource bubble turns purple. If it's fully purple, you can't cast arcane spells anymore. If you cast elemental spells, it turns blue. If it's fully blue, you can't cast elemental spells anymore. So you have to switch between the two, and not rely on one of them too much. Just a thought
that's a nice idea... it also adds to the variety thing

As much as I hope that we don't adopt a "brain expansion" resource system I must admit that it gets the shoot first ask questions later part down pat!
yeah, that was in my mind when i thougt it... the critics i recived are good ones, but i came up with the idea thinking about the wiz story... you know the little brat that wants more and more power, what if it gets out of her control...
On that line, maybe is she doesn't use her energy and starts taking damage, at last when she dies she can unleash the most uber of explosions? It would be sweet. Of course it's a stupid idea, but it would be funny to see

I don't think it's a good idea !! it's decreasing the variety... If I do a mistake or whatever, my character will cannot re-cast any arcane spell ?? Damn the only issue are to delete my character, I'm sure blizzard won't that. Plus, it's little bit too complex and bring nothing to gameplay else than frustration.
i think you got it wrong... i understood that if your resource bubble get one colour you have to use other kind of spell to change it again and after it changed (lets say to blue) you can use arcane again... that way you wouldn't be able to stick with only one kind of skill... good bye coldsorc or firesorc...

I just think, is to forced the player to doesn't use the spell he want.
And what happen if I don't put any skill point in a "category" ? I'll not be able to re-use this category ? You permanently penalise the players to do something minor.
it's true that this will force the player to use spells that may not want to... this could be the main flaw of this idea...
Now, if you don't place any skill point in a category, how could you re-use it if you wouldn't be able to use it in first place... you need skill points to use skills right?
I just think, is to forced the player to doesn't use the spell he want.
When i've x mana and a spell cost more then x i'm forced to not use the spell. It's the same case.

The "spell bubble" could slowly turns back to it's balanced form thourgh time, like mana regeneration. The more willpower you have, faster the bubble turns back to it's balanced form (something similar to mana regen).
If you are a wizard who only likes one effect you should try to invest in stuff to recover the balance passively.
It's like a barbarian. He have some skills that generates fury for him, but if you don't want to use those skills you still have the option to invest in items that help your rage generation.
Actually i really liked the idea. It creats this very nice balancing situation:
Pure Wizard vs. Hybrid Wizard
Pure Wizards have the advantage of using only one element attack, being more powerfull using it however have a hard time balancing the bubble.
Hybrids however have weaker magic because of the diversification, but can easilly balance his bubble.
They can play alot with this machanic. Like after using alot of elemental spells the damage of the arcane increases, etc...
I kind liked this sugestion.
I remeber seeing a very a *very* similar idea to this in another thread except they managed the ability to cast spell of different elements with different pools. When you cast a spell of one element it consumed the one resourcewhile increasing the others resource.
I think that the colour system will be generally easier to understand and quicker to read.
I think that multiple pools can be more accurately read and is more colour blind friendly.
That being said I like many of the things that this system does:
It ensures that wizards can always cast spells yet doesn't give them infinite mana. This means that resource management is still something that the character must do.
When i've x mana and a spell cost more then x i'm forced to not use the spell. It's the same case.
I think only one restriction are enough. Manage amount of mana, color of mana and choosen the best skill for the right situation/monsters are too much thing to manage...
What will happen with passive skill ? If I only choose passives in a category ?
I'm not close on the idea. But I see too many flaws with that.
Colors aren't accurate enough (between blue and purple/pink you don't have a big range difference), and the penalities still too radical. You force players to don't use the spells he want when he want. If player want to raise a only one skill, it is his problem (monsters will have immunity (confirmed)) but don't deprive the players to do choice.
But it forces the wizard into using at least 2 skills.
maybe if you reach the cap for that type of spell you get a cooldown to use the spell, so you can use the spell you want, and if you need it without the cooldown you just use another and go back to your favorite...
well, i not a solution, but if forcing a player to use minimum 2 spells is so bad, and if we try to "defend" the idea, then, instead of making imposible to use the spell once you reach the cap, making it cooldown could be a way to avoid that forcing, but to encourage variety... but, as i said before, this part is the biggest flaw on the idea so i'm having a hard time trying to find way out of it... (a little help here) lol
other option could be that, as you use one type of spell, its cap grows higher and the caps for other types gets lower, so you can specialize in one kind but in detriment of the others...
if its like this the cap wouldn't penalyze the player, it would be like running out of mana but with stronger spells... for those who choose the "hybrid" wiz will have infinit mana but weaker spells

Yeah cooldown is a great idea to repair the bad idea !! but it still bad... When you need to do a complicating system only to repair a bad design, just clear it and find better...
lower cap aren't a good idea... stop to find hard permanent penalities....
I think the best way is to let the players choose the varieties he want... you have many strategy to do, each spell will be useful for different situation... Players will themself choose variety to pwn !!!
Barb have a system to create variety because he has only one kind of attack (physical) so they will choose logically the one skill who does the best damage...
thanks... now i'm going to sleep, it's 14:21 pm here and i've been up all night so... i'm sure you guys will come up with some great idea or something... i hope...

The wizard don't need a system for variety.
