So, For awhile now I've been rocking the VQ build, because that lets you cast the Zombie Bears and Direbats at a reasonable rate without awesome gear. I recently managed to get a two-handed hammer that finally let my WD break into the 10k dps level (yes, I don't have great gear, even for Inferno Act 1). Anyway, as I'm not going to spend money on the RMAH, and I don't have that much gold (as this is my primary character), I probably won't be upgrading this for a decent amount of time.
That said, while a slow attack speed works wonders with a ZB build, it's not much fun with splinters. Does anyone have suggestions for another primary skill to use? Preferably something that is low cost and somewhat kitable.
Edit: To clear up confusion - I'm using the in game meaning of "Primary" - the cheap skills: Darts, Bombs, Spiders, and Toads. I'm not asking what other build to use with VQ, I'm asking what skill to use with VQ to fill the roll that darts might have - a skill to break stuff (pots/doors) and to hit fast ranged enemies, like spiders.
This is my current build. I want to modify it so it works with a VQ build (primarily ZB), but has the ability to do things I mentioned above. I am not directly asking for a different main damage dealer.
I run splitters because it's so much better then any other options that even the slow animation compensates.
You can try fire dart. It's has weaker damage 160% but it's animation is better.I can't stand firebombs and i haven't touched spiders for quite sometime.
Yeah, I've been running splinters, but the problem is the animation is soooo slow (with a 1.00 aps 2-hander) that you can't hit much, at least in terms of those stupid wasps in Act 2.
I also tried SB. It doesn't do as much damage, and costs way too much mana, but at least it doesn't miss. I'll probably stay with splinters when farming Act 1, but switch to SB in Act 2. Unless someone has a better solution.
And you're right, firebomb and spiders are incredibly lack luster. Given that, unlike every other class, we have to pay mana on even our lowiest primaries, they should be the best in the game. They're not. With the exception of the frankly OP'd splinters, they suck. They're interesting, from a theme and mechanic point of view, but they don't do enough damage for the limitations (tiny ranged frogs and missing spiders/firebomb).
SB eats the resources you use for Dire Bats / Zombie Bears. Not a fan of this option eater. I understand the slow animation of 2h might be annoying against wasps and fast monsters.
My advice is: use Haunt. This spell eats wasps alives in few seconds and it's really good against packs. You can put the slow which makes it even ebtter against packs or the mana return return in order to make it free spell and do not eat up the mana for your other abilities.

Aside from Bears, the only other decent primary ability is Dire Bats. Plague of Toads/Rain of Toads and Acid Cloud/Acid Raid would also work well, especially with the Bad Medicine passive
If you're using a 2H you shouldn't really be using Splinters, should be either Bats or Bears. Rain of Toads maybe, but wouldn't be as good.
As someone already said... using a Primary with a VQ build doesn't make any sense really. The whole point of VQ is that you need it to cast the non-Primary spells because of mana regen.
SB is terrible by the way...
