I was wondering what the community thinks about crit (chance/hit damage) for a witch doctor. I noticed that a flawless square emerald increases damage more than a star ruby (on my weapon). I don't have a star emerald to compare but I will try to make one as soon as possible (once I get enough flawless square emeralds, only have 60 so far; donations of these are appreciated). I suppose crit hit damage might be worth more when you have more crit chance since a higher crit chance is a higher chance to "use" that crit hit damage. I'd like to hear what people think, as well as look at any calculations anyone has done. Please don't simply say "it sucks" or "it's good" without anything to back it up. Thanks.
It's like you said. Ignoring the variance issue an +x% damage on critical increase your damage by +x*y% where y is your critical hit chance.
WD doesn't have alot of critical mechanics like the other 4 classes (i mean skills that does special stuff when you crit). Still it's a good way to increase your damage as soon as you get all the attack speed, int and +dmg you can get.
Another thing i notice is that in slow attack speed builds (VQ with bears) critical (both the damage and the chance) is better in improving your damage then +dmg.
Critical hit chance is useless without critical hit damage. In my opinion you should at least have +100% crit damage, but you should be aiming at +200% crit damage. In my opinion you should have at least 25% crit chance as well.
It is pretty easy to find gear with all the good attributes and crit chance. For example: int, vit and crit chance.
Personally I have 40,5% crit chance and 115% crit damage, but I'm saving up for a ceremonial knife with 85-100% crit damage and 10-14 mana regen. Splinters is pretty awesome with this build already (I have over 2.0 attack speed as well)
200% crit damage means 3x the normal damage (100% doubles and 200% triples the damage). With 40% chance, it means almost my every other hit will do 3x damage. It's a very good way to increase the damage you deal.

Those are my stats, my neck adds 6% to poison damage and all attacks I use deal poison damage. The only thing I'm not sure is how much int/damage/attack speed I should sacrifice for crit chance/damage. Hopefully someone can come up with the numbers on how much each is weighted on our damage.
I bought a new helmet and a new mojo yesterday, which is why my crit chance is now 38,5% (-1% from helmet, -1% from mojo). I also gave up 10% attack speed from gloves, because I found better ones yesterday (I didn't really notice any difference in splinters after the change anyways).
Ceremonial Knife: 500k from AH Mojo: 250k from AH (kinda a bargain) Shoulders: Free from Butcher (inferno) Amulet: Free from Butcher (inferno) Legendary Boots: Drop from Armor Rack when I was lv40ish (the attack speed bonus doesn't work, I'm hoping for a fix) Gloves: 100k from AH (a real steal in my opinion) Helmet: 200k from AH (not bad either) Ring with crit dmg: 300k from AH Ring with crit chance: Free from Butcher (inferno) Bracers: 20k from AH Belt: Friend got it from Belial (Inferno) and gave it to me free Chest: 250k from AH Pants: 350k from AH
Overall spent on gear: 1,970,000 gold
Currently I'm focusing on the crit damage weapon (trying to find a one with 900 DPS), new pants and chest armor. I want more HP and more all resist to fluently farm Act 2 (500 resist & 30k HP should do it).
EDIT: Found a ceremonial knife with 860 dps, 14 mana regen and 70% crit damage for 900k on AH. I also got better shoulders from Butcher today (better int, vit but less all resist). DPS is now 39,5k and HP 27k.
Bad news for you: IAS in your boots is not working
Correct version spells like "Attack Speed Increase"
Witch Doctors, even with a Splinter build. Should focus on DMG, INT, IAS, Crit and Crit damage.
if you could get up to 3 attacks per seconds, and each one of your darts crits for 50k. Think about it. One of the WD's who streams, does this. He also has 80+k dps.

I know, I said it in the post.as well: "(the attack speed bonus doesn't work, I'm hoping for a fix)"
Blizzard said that they will fix it in the next patch 1.03 (or something like that), which is is why I'm keeping the boots. They are still quite good without the attack speed increase because of the high intelligence. When they fix the attack speed, they will be awesome.
you got a source/quote for the boots going to get fixed?
Focusing on decent crit / crit damage ratio. In the sence that crit damage makes crit better and vice versa. 40 % crit chance like some of you got is NOTHING without crit hit damage.
I still have plenty of upgrades to get, biggest ones would be weapon, one ring and neck. And some places I could get more int than i currently have.

As far as "how good is crit" really depends on your gear. For me, Increased Attack Speed is slightly better right now. I imagine if I add more AS, Crit % will be better.

Crit will never scale into being better no matter how much AS you get. What is better relies on the ammounts of each and your other gear. Very good offhands scale with more AS, while high crit hit values benefit the crit value. The value of crit is based on your crit hit damage. Crit is only better with more crit hit damage, which again is better by your crit. When you get 200 crit hit damage 1% crit will be approx. 2 % AS. But not quite as the AS gets the bonus of increasing the damage from offhand and other bonus min/max dmg (the ones on ring, neck etc).
Atm with my 250 % crit hit damage, I value 1 crit slightly better than 2 ias. This means that gloves that can roll up to 10 crit are better than up to 17 AS which also is max. But for rings, where AS rolls are much more than double of max crit roll value, makes AS better for rings. But crit hit damage is needed on both. Necks can get crit rolls about half of AS rolls, so on necks you can chose which to go for. You can also get all 3 affixes on these items, but if you want int as well we're talking 5 mill + items, but they are the best ones.

@Attack Speed Increased@ is working fine. @Increase Attack Speed@ is working ONLY on weapons. It's 2 different stats
Just look attentive at your ring speed stat and compare it with boots.stat
