In D2, it was at time of creation. It was kind of annoying because you had to resummon every minion to keep them up with you if you leveled up or equipped a + Skeleton wand. With items potentially affecting them in D3, will we have to constantly be resummoning our minions just for the sake of maximum power? Or will Blizzard be clever enough to have them automatically adjust when we level up or change out gear?
this is a good discussion here. it is true that in D2 you would have to re-summon after dumping more points into your pets. I really dont think the case will change because this time runes will be changing the effects of your summons. You would HAVE to re-summon in order to get the next rune affect. I doubt that your summons would just change color and size right then and there when you put a rune in. It just wouldnt make any sense.
Are we even aware that any pets duration? It seems to me most of them are glorified spells that only last a matter of seconds. I'd like to know which ones are permanent.

My guess would be for summons if you level they will improve automatically like everything else, but if you put in a rune, they will all either instantly die and resummon, or you will have to resummon them for the change to take place. It doesn't seem to me that anything else makes a lot of sense from a gameplay perspective.
Just re summon then lazy, lol. With the exception of maybe the dogs and the gargantuan these pets aren't going to last very long. This seems trivial, just re summon ffs

It's more a question of resource managment and how the class will play, but way to go with the lazy quip. That was petulant wit at it's finest, for sure.
Mana is described as regenerating slowly. That indicates to me you won't be able to spam short-duration summons along with your damage and control spells. There could potentially be some more premanent summons that form your backbone. Of course this is all conjecture and what i'm really after is data from beta testers in the near future.
