I know the title is a little weird but basically I'm asking if there's any known info on which types of WD summons can be up at the same time? For exampe, in D2, the necro could have:
1 golem
x skeletons
x skeleton magi
x revive
whilst the druid, while having 3 different primary summons (wolf, dire wolf, bear), could only have one type of summon up at any given time. You couldn't have a bear and a wolf out.
So for the witch doctor, does the big zombie "replace" the zombie dogs? Or are they not exclusive for a wide variety amongst our army of destruction?
I assume you can only have one type of minions at a time, so it's either zombie dogs OR big zombie. That doesn't include things like the zombie bears, because they're no summon, but a spell.
I personally don't think that will be the case. In my opinion the Zombie Dogs will be like the Skeletons and the Gargantuan will be more like a beefed up Golem. If not then I'm going to be kind of disappointed.

My place really was here. I was too foolish and stubborn to notice. But, what I truly hoped for then was here. Why do I always realize it When I've already lost it.

I agree, I hope I can have more of a variety. It's one of the main reasons I could never play a summoner Druid in D2 because no "army" was allowed, just one or two pets.
The witch doctor could potentially have a lot of summons running around, if this is the case. We've seen 4 or 5 zombie dogs in action, 4 fetishes (that we've seen), and we already know about the Gargantuan. I almost wonder if Blizzard will make it so that the WD can have one zombie summon in action and one fetish summon, because otherwise it could be a lot running around on the screen at once.
Seeing as Diablo 3 is meant to be improving and expanding from Diablo 2, I really hope that the Witch Doctor acquires a number of different summons and can have multiples of each out at any one time. =)
I think there will be no limits because the witch doctor only have two summons. The dogs and the gargantua. The other options are actually spells that fades really fast like Elemental from D1.

This.
Planning the WD as my second class, I'd like to try and make a summon build. Summon Necros were one of my favorite builds to mess around with, and not just because it caused players on lesser computers to freak out ;). As mentioned in the OP, Necros could summon a zoo of creatures, making for a fun and effective ball of awesome. The only maintance to your army is buffing your summons, debuffing monsters, and keeping the ranks full, which is an interesting way to try an make it through the game. I truly hope the WD supports this type of gameplay.

I hope your right, I loved summon necros in D2 and I pretty much play those exclusively right now. I really want to make a new army in D3 and still have some damage skills to back my army up.
I really hope I don't have to choose between the dogs and the gargantuan. I want to be rolling around with all of them fighting by my side. Blowing up the dogs when needed and keeping the gargantuan to protect me.:wd:

I couldn't play through nightmare with my summon necro my summons kept dying horribly at duriel.... I was leaning towards playing the Witchdoctor first but maybe this means I'm more suited to using a certain Demon Hunter?
I had thought that the Gargantuan was a solo summon, I can't imagine having more of them! Now the zombie dogs, I could see having 4-5 of those running around (although probably not more than 6). Just the impression that I got.

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...
