After hearing Shenlong’s Spirit has been significantly buffed, I have decided to test it out. Dmg has been buffer from 300% to 1200% weapon dmg and internal cooldown changed from fixed value to 3/your attack speed. So that really got me hyped because I enjoy to build around something special more then anything else in Diablo.
The build is simple, combination strike with 2 generators, cyclone strike for pulling, sweeping wind for complementary dmg. I would get rid of serenity when I get my krelm’s buff bracers, because knockbaks are so annoying… Mantra for some more all res and dodge chance, it doubles my survivability. And with this build not being spirit hungry, you can have active effect at all times.
Passives are classic choices for generator heavy build, attack speed buffers, combination strike and sixth sence for elemental dmg mitigation.
Here is the link to my build, so you can see preferred items. Also, take a look at the video, and see the build in action along with some more explanations of my choices.
Do you feel Shenlong buff was sufficient? Can it compete with WKL and other amazing lightning weapons or even buffed 2 handers? To me it definitely feels powerful now, internal cooldown change was a great move in right direction. It just sometimes feel that the ball is too small. Maybe an energy explosion around you would enable more synergy with some skills, but it is improvement of the set for sure.
Combination Strike with 2 generators = 20% extra damage.
It could be likely the same by changing that passive for Determination (20% extra damage when having 5 monsters around you). Change your LMB to Mystic Ally/Fire Ally (10% extra damage) and then you will get more extra damage. That way you get 10% extra damage that means more damage than 15% attack per second.
Agree, it could be done that way and it could probably be more dmg. But I like to stick with attack speed because of energy ball proc and life on hit, along with the theme behind this build
And your suggestion would be even more viable if I could get The Crudest Boots, for 20% dmg from mystic ally.
The plan ATM is to swap Serenity for Mystic Ally when I get Krelm's Buff Bracers, because knockbacks are what kills me 95% of the time. Must.not.stop.attacking...
@Lestat Yea, finally. No more 90% useless passives, and we've got nice item buffs, 2 handers buff, feels like we have a choice now Will see how it goes in higher GRs.
If you combine this build with the sunwuko set (4piece), would that be an upgrade to the build ?
The 2 piece would be a waste, but the 4 piece should be awesome with it, what do you think about it ?
I am looking forward for such a build for my monk
Greets Deso
I would't do it because I don't like to mix 2 elements, fire and holy. Maybe with some build that doesn't utilize %elemental dmg and focuses on pure paper dps, but with Sunwuko, I would stick to Flying Dragon for sure. Build can be similar, but I would just focus on 2H staff and %holy dmg. I think it would be more viable than this one for sure (if we consider sunwuko dmg buffed to 3500%), but I have always liked Shenlong set, and being viable ATM is enough for me to play it a bit
Does TLK cost too much spirit with the new changes or is this a way of giving the “ranged fire build” a buff? At least my thought was going for the http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/gyana-na-kashu and TLK with the rune Vulture Claw Kick. However, I am not sure if it’s compatible with anything

I have also gave it some thought in my Build section. Just swap Serenity with LTK (and I would use spinning flame kick instead of vulture) . And also consider Deadly Reach, because with that kind of build, you can definitely kite a bit. Gyana na Kashu dmg is also buffed, so I can see this combination being competitive. Sadly we don't have some kind of line group up of enemies, but Cyclone Strike and a bit of movement gets the job done.
Forgot to say, nothing here is a huge spirit spender, so you can put LTK in for sure.
Been wanting to test out shenlong since the bufff but dont have both pieces.
The way I see it is that you don't really need to focus on +emental damage, freeing you up to use a proc heavy build. I.e. Shenlongs + Smite Gem + Gorgok of swiftness + Sunwuko 4pc (mantra spam decoys) would be really powerful without focusing on an element.
But then why not just focus on Sunwuko and Mirinae, Teardrop of the Starweaver? Sunwuko set+Flying dragon+Smite Gem+Attack Speed and use something like Crippling Wave, Rising Tide to generate as much spirit as possible, spend as much as you can, apply huge amounts of those holy beams around you and just benefitimmenselyfrom %holy dmg?
Don't know why, but I just don't like to mix elements
Here's a question. Do you think the new shenlongs will compete with with a daibo when paired with sunwuko?
Thanks for testing, it's always best to hear how something behaves in a game, then just theorycraft I sadly don't have Sunwuko, so can't test it atm, but you have pretty much confirmed my thought process on Sunwuko>Shenlong.
Tbh, I am a bit disappointed in your Flying Dragon test, because when I tried it out, with the exact same build I use for Shenlong set, it was almost the same. 2H dmg is just really high now. And paired with 20% from Sunwuko, oh boy. Maybe even Staff of Kyrro is viable in that setup, but we must wait for Blizzard to make a holy rune for Deadly Reach
All in all, I am satisfied how Shenlong performs now, and the fact that we have some options. Will need to test everything a bit better when patch hits live, especially Sunwuko set, Staff of Kyro physical bleeding legendary gem generators build, lightning on hit build, perma freeze rimehearth monk, oh man, so many options. But have to admit, I am a bit bored of grinding all the best gear on ptr just to see all disappear in a week.
Can you please help me out I think everyone mentioning our survi is fine, but I do not think so. I was trying Epiphany Shroud but without dashing strike monk felt just too slow.
Second problem is that if I go full offensive I will die on first tougher pack of elites. Dex gems, Offensive Skills and MoC.
Dmg was quite good, only had to manage spirit before packs. Crits between 80-100M. Not so bad not so good due to the fact that spirit generation is quite okay.
What do you think ?
Huh, had no idea it would be that rough Maybe I am just so used to my unity, that I stop thinking in other directions.
I have a feeling that Life per Spirit Spent would go amazingly well with Sunwuko, did you try that out? I have found out that Life per Hit is so good now, I would even cut some dmg or all res for +8000loh.
Well, I already do exactly that in one of my builds/videos
The issue is that as soon as you start using a daibo, you can't really stack that much +holy damage. Theoretical max are SoJ + Amulet + Bracers + Andariels for +80%- but as it stands now Monks, that aren't using perma Desert Shroud, need double unity to survive Grfit 30+ and ofc RoRG for the set bonuses. In addition - to use andariels - you need to get your sunwuko 4 set from Amulet, gloves, shoulders - and getting a trifecta amulet is hard enough never mind getting a trifecta Sunwuko's Amulet. In any case even if you did get a trifecta wukos ammy there are some very powerful monk spirit stones that would compete with andariels. So unless you are very very very lucky, a realistic max +holy damage for such a build would be 40%. Which isn't much.
And when you want to start throwing in legendary gems you usually have to sacrifice some powerful affixes to do so. (again you probably need a perfect roll on your jewelry to not be hurt too much from rolling sockets on them)
Thus why I say its not that important to stack elemental damage with WuKos.
Since Shenlongs fists can't roll elemental damage your kinda in the same boat. Sure you got cindercoat and magefists to make up for that, but if you took wukos over magefists you lose 20% fire damage potentially but gain 3500% weapon damage explosions - which i think more than makes up for it
If it helps you can think of it as a 'Righteous Fire' Build instead of a Holy/fire elemental mix
Well, this totally opened my eyes You are actually right about stacking %holy dmg. Will need to test it for sure, it may be a fine build The only thing that would really bug me if I used Sunwuko and Shenlong is that lost 20% daibo dmg It should be something like "20% more dmg if wielding a monk specific weapon".
Just not into Righteous Fire theme that much, actually never even liked the skill in POE.
I don't particularily like, how all our sets force us into a specific element. Raiment -> have to use Lightning and Dashing Strike. Sunwuko -> have to use Holy and high spirit gen/spend, Shenlong -> have to use fire. Many of the other class-specific sets might lock you into specific skills (leapquake, marauder, jade, vyr etc etc...) but very rarely they restrict you to one element. This makes our options feel very linear when using those sets, compared to other classes.
Especially Raiment set, not only fixed on element, but also on a skill and occupying 6 pieces. And with dashing strike cooldown increased to 8, we need to insert some cooldown on gear too. It is really restrictive. If it was 4 piece set, then ok, it could be complementary.
Sunwuko is ok I guess, for a 4 piece set.
Inna, kinda disappointing. Feels like a newbie set in a way. I would find it appropriate if they made Inna belt give %holy dmg, or if the legs stayed the way they were.
I tested the build, it's not bad but there is a flaw there: the exact same build performs better with a Maximus. Shen Long set just isn't cutting it even though they buffed it.
Haven't tried with Maximus, but tested with Flaying Dragon, and it was a close call sadly. But with Maximus finally scaling with % fire dmg, I can see it being super potent. Buff Shenlong some more
I think allowing them to roll an extra affix would pretty much fix them, they certainly aren't far behind
It would maybe be too much. We already have Rhamaladni's Gift, and if you are dual wielding you can have 2 more stats, instead of 1 if wielding a 2h weapon. And attack speed is kinda important too, so dw-ing is better for LOH and different procs.

Ofc, here is my profile.
Dmg element is fire, and %fire dmg on gear will boost it.
