I guess technically, this isn't monk-specific, but it bothers me when people are frequently asking for what to upgrade next and they have crappy gems.
Please, people, they don't have to be all marquises, but when none even have 5 sides, just do that first.
Which brings me to my next question: I see lots of threads on farming, and picking up rares, and which slots to even bother picking up. There was a time when I had like 400 tome of secrets, and I stopped picking them up. Gems too - especially ones I don't use, like topaz. But now I make it a point to pick up EVERY gem and tome I see. I keep the left column of my bag dedicated to them, and once I get up near the full stack (100) of most of the colors, I just upgrade them. Sometimes I throw them in my chest and continue to upgrade as I go along, and eventually, I sell most that aren't emeralds. What do you do about gems?
Its so useless to pick up tomes and gems ( maybe red and green since they actually sell for a decent amount ).But seriously if u are poor as hell u should concentrate on just farming like a mad man and ignoring these things cause theywill never amount to the gold amount u need to buy what u want.
I pick them up and upgrade them. The amount of money required to upgrade them almost exceeds the amount I get by farming, but I'm not stopping until I get my radiant stars of each type.
Though I've started leveling some alts, I only pick up Flawless Square gems. I'm not particular about the color, it just seems to me that enough of those drop in Inferno and late Hell that picking up lesser gems is a waste of bag space and money to upgrade. I've probably already got more Flawless Square gems then I'll ever be able to upgrade to Radiant and beyond, so why pick up lesser ones just to upgrade them to that point?
I will say, though, that in D2 I picked up ALL the gems ALL the time. I guess it's just the added gold cost of upgrading in D3 that is stopping me.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.
On the itemization thread, where they're talking about dropping fewer, but better items, I suggested, "hey, why not have a chance to drop better quality gems?" That would be nice..

I personally dont pickup any gems/tomes anymore.
Now in HC that is a completely different monster. Everything gets picked up as everything has value whether for crafting mats or upgrades.
