I want to spend 5 million on a well rounded every-slot gear set, pretty much. Although I am willing to consider neglecting a certain slot for more power / defense in another.
There's this guy with a streaming channel about monks. He did a few "pimp my monk" videos where he equips a monk from scratch with a certain amount of gold.
Of course you will have to scale down to your budget, but watching that gives you kind of a good idea how to gear up a monk from scratch. Also make sure you read the inferno guide that is sticky here.
Now, what else is there to say? One decision you have to make is whether to go dual wield (DW) or sword/shield. Personally I think DW is more Monk style, but since the weapon is the most expensive part of a gear set, it's much easier to get a decent setup going with a shield.
Second, you have to pick a resistance that you will stack. Any resistance is fine, though arcane, cold and poison seem to be least popular among other classes and therefore might offer slightly cheaper armor prices. I'm not sure that's true, I'm doing fine with lightning, but it's something to consider.
Now, one thing most guides say is to stack crit chance. With a 5M budget, that's difficult of course. In particular crit rings are expensive, attack speed might be more affordable and is just fine.
my opinion is you can get some good equip to farm act 1-2 with a 5m budget. like thundersteele said crit is an important stat nowadays. therefore it is much less expensive if you go shield, since you can get 8%+ very cheap and you get defensive stats aswell. another point is, that on the lower dps range the difference between shield and dual wield is not that high. aaaand you dont have to care about LoH which can be very expensive aswell.
Why don't I have to worry about LoH if I have a shield?
I follow newti's stream a lot and he is an amazing monk with great game knowledge
if you're playing in NA you can get a nice set up with 5m gold
With 1million gold you can get a nice weapon, around 8xx dps, go for Dex+Socket in it
spend around 200-400k in a shield, you might want to put 8% crit chance at least in it, and search for dex+vit or %life + 15%+ block chance and all resists or a nice chunk of a specific resist
now you have to stick to your shield's resist in your whole gear
try to get good dps in rings and gloves, and go for the dex, vit, resist balance in your other pieces
he often tells us to go for this rules
every piece has to have, "dex, vit and resists in it" you can have exceptions made for jewelry~
drop life on hit for "increased health globe and gold pickup radius" you will be healing automatically by every elite, mob killed
this is how newti plays himself, no loh at all
i think you might want to aim for these stats
18k dps minimum(i really think you can get more than that with patience)
5-6k armor
650+ resists(easy to achieve)
30k hp
crit chance 20% minimum (Sweeping winds cyclone is amazing, and starts to shine at 20% crit chance)
crit damage 130% (with 5mil gold, you can rely only on the gem in your socketed weapon if you want to, get 80% crit dmg , some crit damage in your amulet wont harm at all)
obs: you might want to get attack speed instead of crit chance in your rings, reason is because crit chance is a bit more expensive, and the damage it gives you is equivalent to the damage IAS will give you, so its a fair trade and a cheaper one
with this setup you'll be able to farm act I with speed, and somehow act II too(ocasional deaths to silly mobs with silly affixes)

Interesting.
When exactly do elites drop health globes? I haven't paid attention. If they drop them when they die it will make invulnerable minion packs nearly impossible.

Sometimes they drop randomly
your question is interesting though, but i've never seen any complaint about invul minions, i believe that if u're using thunderclap, and after the Invul minion HP nerf, you will be able to kill those elites real fast, they do not pose a threat
Yeah, I'm not sure if the health globe only play style works with <20k dps. Some LoH could help, in particular with a shield and high resists, you take very little damage, so LoH is perfect to keep you alive.
LoH becomes less valuable at high dps... once you one-hit white mobs there's not much healing going on any more.
I believe we want to take into account that he is gonna farm Act I with this setup
so, he doesnt really need the LOH, at least i didnt use it in my ACT I farm sessions, but yup, it is a matter of preference and playstyle here

I don't really see the downside of having some of the affixes on some of your gear be LoH.

Well, the same item with LoH costs about 5x as much as a similar item without. Given a fixed budget, and LoH only being available on weapons and jewelry, you will always have to sacrifice damage in order to get LoH.
I'm cool with that. I don't intend on blowing stuff up, more like being able to convincingly survive almost all elite affix types.
Anyone want to talk builds?
Shoot me a starter build. I tend to like sweeping wind builds with serenity, the blindy thing and/or the healy thing But I don't really care. I'll overhaul to a completely different build if it works well
The spreadsheet I use has EHP values as well as the DMG and stat weights for both.
I feel a tool like this is essential for getting the most bang for you buck.
Just download it or sign into google and copy to edit it.

Mine is kinda simple. F.e. i know most of the times a shield with 1k points is about 10mil on the ah. If i find one for like 5mil i know its a good deal and maybe worth it to buy. I miss some stats on yours.Like LL, LOH, Healthglobe etc.
Yea, I really didn't assign values to anything. I know the AH quite well lol. All I need to see is the EHP vs DMG gain and I'll decide there.
It's really handy when you have to compare say 280 vit chest vs 150 vit with 80 all resist.
If you'd like I could set up LOH and life steal though that way you can see average HPS based on your aps/dmg. As for the health globes, that's a bit more complicated to quantify haha.
It will be a big project though as the spreadsheet works for all classes and I'd have A LOT of research to do on coefficients.
I am very happy with the results, he does a ton of DPS and I've been LoLing through act 1 inferno.
There's room for improvement of course, and with my next couple millions I will replace the shittiest items on his set for solid bonuses to resists and stuff probably.
Loving my fresh monk. First was a wizard.

This doesn't matter.
No.. they don't. They proc from active weapon when you use sweeping winds. As does sweeping winds damage.
