After playing Monk Barb and DH (Inferno) for a while I have to admit Monk feels like its the unfinished class. Every time I play Barb I can see the "role" (even though not fulfilling it atm with how weak they are) he has, same for DH, but Monk just feels like he's lacking a punchline, or a point. I get the Martial Arts thingie, which is nice, Yet the potential of this class is so much greater then what we have in the game.
Our spenders are.. well, while some being fun, it feels like (all of them, in my opinion) cost too much resources whilst not really delivering. Everything just feels WEAK. Even SSS which is supposed to be one of our strongest attacks just feels very weak compared to even using Bash as a Barb. I'm playing a paperweight which should feel like a gosu zen master ninja that can rip your eyes out with his calm mind.
The only fun and strong spender I can think of is Exploding Palm. Which is really fun, but COSTS TOO MUCH in order to maintain. Rend is a 360% AoE bleed which does the SAME AMOUNT OF DAMAGE, costs HALF and can be easily maintained while using other spenders.
I made a thread called "Zero mobility as Monk?", feel free to read through it, basically it means that we're supposed to be agile, but we have no spells that allow us to move around like ninjas. (before you start arguing please read the post).
One more thing.
If were supposed to be martial art specialists, why don't we have a "full spirit" passive? the only thing remotely close to this is Combination Strike, but its too weak in order to really justify taking it over another passive (+18% damage? give me a break). Berserker Rage gives a +25% damage bonus. Now thats a passive I can work with.
Maybe I'm missing something.
Please let me know what you think.
A friend of mine plays the Monk. He's pretty happy with it too. Dont you have a rune for one of the mantras that generates massive ammounts of spirit whenever you hit something? He just seems to neber run out of spirit. Maybe its about resource management, i dont know. Anyway sorry cant really help you here

I'm not happy with Monk at all. I think they deserve more love then any other class in the game at the moment. I think Barb's need a bit of a buff defensively talking but Monks are horrible in this current game state. They barely do damage with they're spenders that cost way too much and have absolutely no mobility whatsoever to cover the "lack" of defensiveness.
I agree with OP - even compared to Barbarian monk is lacking. Barbs have easier time hitting really high armor values, 2 solid escape tools (1 granting insane armor buff), very solid live leaching abilities % based (meanwhille my heals feels worse the more vitality i get). But most difference comes out from freenzy insane attack speed modifier (75% seriously...) allowing them to stack other stats and still do good dps (also benefiting them from live/hit 75% more then us) and Wrath of the Berserker (Insanity) nearly tripling their dps for the times of need. I understand Barbs have equally bad times gearing as us but outcome is simply better.
I can easilly do Kull/Belial run and tank most Belials abilities, but come act 3 and things go wrong. Especially wrong with dps imo, i can survive champs for quite a whille but more often then not i end up randomly falling over before i got them down.
P.S. Being practically forced to pick armor/dodge/-dmg runes for our core dmg abilities doesn't help either. Also spirit spenders are weak, possibly becouse of our really low dps. Barbs spenders aren't much better (given about same dps we've), although i think they skip them in act 3 and beyond.
So given how low our dmg are in realistic scenarios i think the proper way of actions would be either buffing our passive defence abilities to allow more focus on dps, or increasing coefficients on both generators and spenders.
Its probably just me but i'm having fun with my monk, you guys just want to play versions of the monk that aren't as viable with how the game works.
Like the monk that just solo'd diablo, his spec is exactly what i would go for to do that, its not that hard to see some things work better on certain bosses / packs.
Personally i play a tank monk, and i can tank 1, 2, 3 and 4 player easily in inferno act 1 and just fine in act 2.
I think you should find a spec and gearset that fit togeter in what level of content you are, There are many ways to play each class, like blizzard said *There are optimal specs but way more viable specs*.
And that monk who solo'd it required about 2-3 times better gear than other classes.
I'll be impressed to see him posting a video of solo farming 5xNV before diablo kill. Myself i don't believe it's possible with how low his defensive stats are. We all know how easy it is to heal through bosses with live/hit compared to certain elites.
P.S. As mentioned above i've no troubles with act 2 content, act 1 i can run with 160 magic find with eyes half closed and yet act 3 takes stats balancing to a new extremes. Imo killing boss is one thing (especially given how gimped they're), whille reliably clearing content is a different one.
Your post on movement has so many people taking apart your comparison to Barbarians that is seems like you are just making posts and then not reading them. The fact that you are using that post to support this one makes it clear that you just want people to agree with you.
Your opinion is barely anecdotal and offers no evidence or facts that we can reply to.
Well to be fair Blizzard did say way in advance gear will come from elite champions as well as bosses, so I'd say just kill the bosses because they are fun rather than just loot pinatas. Or just farm 5NV/Elites>Treasure Goblins.
On topic I rather enjoy the playstyle of the Monk. So what if I get creamed in Act II/III. Lol.

Thanks, that's actually a real nice video. Now only need to triple my dps meh;/
P.S. Loot from bosses is depressing, even Diablo droping lvl 59 items. What a let down.
