On the other hand, Dashing Strike can go _a lot_ further than leap. Hitting with ancient spear in PvP is unlikely to be trivial against opponents worth a damn. DS may cost spirit, but it's also the best, by far, gap closer you listed.
*edit* in anticipation of 'how are you supposed to have enough spirit for DS if you can't reach anyone?': get items that regen spirit automatically.
You're completely right about actually hitting a target. It's not brought up much because not a lot of people have tried pvp, but I think I can safely say I foresee a LOT of whining when people realize this isn't wow with heat seeking fireballs.
Playing pvp at last years Blizzcon (wiz), I realized right away how easy it was to dodge the DH's shots; Keep running. I also threw out ever using magic missile in like 4 seconds when I realized others weren't going to stand still either. Of course arcane torrent was awesome, no matter where they ran you could hit em =D
Point being I wanted to chime in on what you said; People actually able to pvp will be very hard to hit with ranged skills =D And if you're a monk w/o spirit trying to close a gap, I recommend dodge w/e ranged they are throwing and trying to come up from behind (lol).

I think that a PvP barb will have both Leap and Furious Charge. I don't see Dashing Strike going further than leap, actually. At least from beta videoes.
Dashing strike can go a whole screen, as far as the farthest enemy you can click on =)
Umm? What? Besides the fact Monks are the most mobile class in the game as far as I can defer from our skills and passives we do have generators that are meant to close the distance, such as...
@Ronance: the skills you selected are interesting.
I wonder how far Thunderclap can teleport. The Mantra and Fleet Footed should work aswell.
As for the other skills, you need to hit to have the utility.
Tsunami increases the range of the third strike, can you shift+attack to get that third attack without a target?
And for Blazing Fist, you need a crit... not really reliable...
Dashing Strike can take you to any enemy you can click on. Yes that also means that one pixel of a skeleton at the edge of your screen (from my own monk in beta). Leap doesn't take you all that far.
*edit* damn youSnaks42, so quick!
Maybe you and Snaks are right, but probably that's due to the fact that Leap is a 3d movement, that needed to be nerfed in some way. But i'm obiouvsly ot.
There's no maybe here. Dashing strike DOES take you as far away as it is possible to click on an enemy. If you hold your cursor at the edge of the screen and then use leap, you will only go about half that distance.
Weird. Whenever I use Dashing strike on an enemy that's all the way at the edge, I get dashed only to the edge of that group of enemies, cutting just short :< Can't say that it's in all cases, but I specifically remember this as it annoyed me a bit the couple times I tried to hit .
i agree there can be a prob - tho mayB u start an arena with full spirit than use stun so u can use some fast generator like fist of thunder to get some of the spirit back or focus ur gear on movement speed and spirit regan.
also the rune fists of fury(way of the hundred fists) give u abit of dash tho we can't know what is that short distance mean rly :).

but guess we will just have to w8 and see

I would *assume* since we start games full spirit, arena will be the same. Only makes sense imo =D

yeah, i've seen this too. dashing strike always doesn't take you as far as you can click.
that being said, i am playing in a widescreen resolution. that may have something to do with it, since i can dash to enemies as far as i can see up and down, but not left and right.
The barb has Leap or Ancient Spear, but Dashing Strike and Tempest Rush cost Spirit...

Every skill there, though some aren't generators they are all used to close the gap or keep the gap from ever manifesting

For sure. Without a rune, shift+attack works fine in beta if there's no enemy anywhere near, so with rune it will do as well
It's quite similar to Deadly Reach: The third attack goes pretty far as well, and you can just stand there and shift+click

You say this as if Fury generated all on its own.
The biggest drawback for the Monk is having to hit something multiple times to gain enough Spirit to do anything.
