How does the community feel about the lack of offensive passives? We get 3 total that are so so.
1.Beacon of ytar barely counts seeing as how it increases the spirit cost.
2.Guiding Light is ok but requires actively refreshing it. Also its unusable while soloing.
3.Guardians Path allows 2h player more offensive finishers. But this is easily countered with the Golden Rune. Golden Runes in any spirit generating move enable more spirit regen. Giving duel weilding players a chance to generate higher spirit.
Do you think our defensive passives are strong enough to make up for this?
Do you think the class in general is just so powerful that adding offensive passives would make it OP?
Funny that you mention it, I also realized this earlier today when I toyed around with the skill generator. I wanted to make a defense heavy hardcore build, and I was pleasantly surprised.
I think this decision is intentional though. Since the Monk is supposed to be a soft character that hits very hard, they probably opted to give him more defensive options than most classes. I don't know how I feel about it though, I think it might work out. The monk does seem very strong overall.
I guess in the end Blizzard is going for a 'the best offense is a defense' strategy with the monk, if that makes any sense.
Exalted Soul (increases spirit by 100) and Chant of Resonance (1 Spirit per second while a mantra is active) could both be used offensively. Also, Mantra of Conviction is essentially an offensive passive, and when combined with the Golden Rune (heals players when they use melee attacks on a enemy effected by MoC), it makes it so you wouldn't have to refresh Guiding Light.
Also, @Diablo said that the amount of skills is likely to change before release, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Monk got some passives we haven't seen yet. Especially since he has 2 less than the Barb. That being said, passives across all classes seem to be more for utility/defense/regen than offense.
I think the monk's passives work out just fine. I think this for two main reasons.
One is that which was already stated, his abilities are already extremely powerful and his passives only really need to be supplemental to them or reinforce his defense to keep him actively enganged with highly offensive 6 abilities.
The second reason I think he's fine is that some of his passives and active abilities perform double duty. For instance, the extra 100 spirit one can be extremely offensive in the fact you can spam that much harder with spenders. It can also be considered defensive giving him a larger pool in which to heal and evade from.
Other things like conviction mantra can be seen as extremely offensive or even really defensive when you use the rune of (alabaster I think?) which decreases all damage the mobs deal by 45%.
All in all I think his abilities and rune options compliment each other nicely and I don't feel he lacks in any one particular area as long as you plan your character well.

But thats the thing you HAVE to take 2 passives that are minor buffs and add them together for an ok offensive buff. Othe r classes just start off with amazing offensive passives. They don't have to combo. Also with the fact you can only take 3 means that each buff needs to be good.
@Groanan: Your taking 3 buffs to basically save up and burst hard once every minute.
Idk I guess my play style is consistent good dps not burst and none of the passives really help with that for me.
I think there are quite a few passives that are offensive passives disguised as defensive passives. One With Everything, Seize the Initiative, and Sixth Sense all seem defensive in their nature, but they also allow you to choose and stack much more offensive gear/stats than you might be able to get away with without those skills.
IMO, Monk has the best passive skills so far. All the other classes have lots of things like +damage, which is great, but I think the Monk's passives do the best job of synergizing with his skills to create interesting build combinations.
