75 spirit is VERY spammable once we get higher lvl and get more Spirit/s or per hit item effects.
I love speculation, but this sentence is stated as a fact. Either you have been working at Blizzard for a while and playing the game, or you made this up.
We can guess, but we have simply not seen what mechanisms Blizzard will use to balance the classes. I do not forsee +Spirit on kill, etc. affixes growing out of control.
Have you seen beta testers at a mere lvl 8-10 playing? I saw this guy fighting Leoric and he was literally spamming his Breath of Heaven. It costs 75 Spirit, the same as the no-cd Seven Sided Strike. This is only low level. Spirit generation scales MASSIVELY with atk speed and Spirit/s stats. And we already know that there are many ways to increase your spirit gen with runes.
Math wise, an average DWing monk will hit twice per second. This guy I'm watching right now has 1.88 attacks per second on his char sheet. That's 6x2 per second so 12 spirit per second. This is all BASE atk speed and spirit regen btw. It takes only 6.25 seconds to build back the 75 spirit you just spent on Seven Sided Strike. It should not be hard at all to lower that number down to as low as 3s. So you sit in Seven Sided Strike all invulnerable then you pop out and hit something for 3 seconds. Back to god mode you go. How is that not spammable?
Remember though, we're not discussing how this maximizes the dmg you do. The whole point of spamming Seven Sided Strike is the fact (as far as we've seen) that you're invincible for the duration. Now slap on a rune that increases the amount of attacks in there, and you have an OP char.
Man, again, you are stating shit as fact. Whats this 'it shouldn't be hard to lower it to 3 seconds', you kidding me? The attacks are already fast with DW, if anything I don't see it going lower than 4.5 sec while doing viable damage. (and that's speculation on my part, because, I haven't played the game). If you were to stack every possibly IAS then your damage would be nill. Lastly, play the class past level 13 before you start freaking out about OP'ness.
You dont know that it's going to be OP you just assume it will be. Assuming makes an ass out of you and me.
I can assume that Earthquake spamming with Golden Rune, and Call of the Ancient spamming with Golden Rune with the added passives of Boon of Bul Kathos, and Animosity will be OP? At end game?
Or you know a witch doctor using blood ritual to spam for eternity when u get health regen items, or use the health regen rune effects on abilities and using tribal rites
see? now dont scream OP till u get to 60
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
"...We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that sheds his blood with me
shall be my brother..."
My "2 cents" in this topic would be the Monk would be OP because of the passives that take offensive stats and turn them into defensive stats. Like:
- while dual-weilding, chance to dodge increased by (10)%
- Defense increased by (25)% of attack
- Dodge chance increased by (50)% percent of critical chance.
- While stunned, feared or charmed damage taken reduced by (75)%
- Your resistance to all elements is equal to your highest elemental resist.
Snaks, just go watch any decent monk in beta right now that uses Breath of Heaven as a heal and see how often he can use it. Of course the "as low as 3s" is speculation, but really, will the 3 seconds suddenly make Seven Sided Strike spam not viable? No. I'm not going to stack every possible IAS either, I don't even have to. The WHOLE POINT of my argument is that you can literally gear for nothing but + attack and still generate Spirit quickly enough to use Seven Sided Strike at an obscene rate. Why do I need to level past 13? The spirit per hit is STATIC, and the rate of generation will only go up. There are many other factors affecting spirit gen besides IAS. For example there is Spirit/minute which has already showed up on rares in beta right now.
Now if you're going to argue how little damage Seven Sided Strike does, well, it does 130% per hit for 7 very fast hits and you're untouchable for the duration. You can up the amount of hits also. It's a very potent skill.
@Mac
Do I really need to assume that something is OP if this thing gives me:
- Very good damage that scales with weapon dmg
- Makes me invulnerable
- Can be used at least every 6s
And yes it is considered OP to be able to hotswap Earthquake into Call of the Ancient into Wrath of the Berserker, especially with the passive. But that's because hotswap is a terrible mechanic, just like how removing the CD on a skill that gives you GOD MODE is a terrible mechanic.
To give you a perspective: Serenity has a 60s CD and gives you immunity to all dmg for only THREE seconds. Guess what? You can just use Seven Sided Strike to do the EXACT same thing AND do dmg in the mean time. Seven Sided Strike has a 60s CD without the passive too, so why isn't Serenity included in the passive? That's because it shouldn't, and so shouldn't Seven Sided Strike. You can call me pulling shit out of my ass all you want but this does NOT change the fact that Seven Sided Strike makes Serenity completely obsolete (at least for personal use).
Wait wait, if the spirit per hit is static, then how does the 'rate of regeneration only go up'? The only thing that will affect it will be weapon speed, which isn't tied to level.

Most monk weapons (fists and staves) have a stat that gives you spirit/min. Take a look at this:
SpiritRegen 1 of the Tiger of Renewal
SpiritRegen 2 of the Tiger Awakening
SpiritRegen 3 of the Tiger of the Temple
SpiritRegen 4 of Rebirth Bliss
SpiritRegen 5 of Rebirth Paradise
SpiritRegen 6 of Rebirth Harmony
SpiritRegen 7 of Awakening Consciousness
SpiritRegen 8 of Awakening Revelation
SpiritRegen 9 of Awakening Illumination
SpiritRegen 10 of Enlightenment of Rebirth
the first one can be seen in several Monk weapons. The WEAKEST one I've seen gives 12 Spirit/min. Don't tell me that this value won't be going up in the next NINE levels.
Also, this passive:
Chant of Resonance
lvl 15 Duration of all Mantras increased by 120 seconds. While one of your Mantras is active you gain 1 Spirit every second.
There's another 60 spirit/min for you at lvl 15. We don't know yet if that value will go up but my point stands.
Isn't that what beta testing is for? I certainly wouldn't want to wait well into release then tell Blizzard "oh I think my class might be overpowered."
Actually, no. The D3 beta has nothing to do with balance testing. They've stated that multiple times. That's why it's only a very small part of the first Act.
And it's a PvE game (they aren't balancing PvP), so it's not as big of a deal if they release a few classes a little overpowered and then tweak balance after release. Regardless, it's WAY too early to start calling any of the classes overpowered.
Everyone DOES realize that 7-Sided Strike will have a CD right?
...Right?
No, no it's cool... Don't worry about it. I'm sure someone will realize eventually...
lol i dont even wanna post the build i just made with the skill calculator for fear of people not reading it. The monk has the greatest ability to cycle resource for damge, healing or more resource... case closed OP race, and thats why im pocking it =-)

These are passive skills as found in this picture from the beta:

I love the increased defense by stacking +attack/crit/single-elemental resist items.
PS, numbers that are in () are green in the photo. This means they are affected somehow in game and can change based on some mechanic.
