I thought it would be fun to brainstorm and share ideas of rune effects for various skills. I will start the Monk with Seven-Sided Strike:
Unleashes a fury of attacks, striking nearby enemies multiple times, dealing a percentage weapon damage for each hit.

* Increased area of effect, hiting more enemies at once or making it harder to scape..
* Concentrate the attacks in a smaller area, greatly improving it's intesity.
* Covers yourself in light after using it, recieving a great attack speed and evasion bonus.
* Add some element to the attacks. Maybe lightning ? (i can easilly see his unleashing a charged bolt with every hit). Add element is such a easy and cool way to make rune effects great hehe
To master the Seven-Sided Strike, a Monk must become swift and precise enough to be comparable to a lightning strike. Sometimes, the devotion to this analogy is taken so seriously, that a Monk may actually generate and channel lightning through the Seven-Sided Strike to wreak extra havoc upon his enemies.
So, each strike landed with Seven-Sided Strike sends a bolt of chain lightning to nearby enemies. What a lightshow!
Golden Rune - The skill now has added effects on the strikes but only does 50% of the weapon damage.
Arcane strike has a chance to silence the enemy for 2 seconds.
Cold strike has a chance to freeze the enemy for 2 seconds.
Fire strike has a chance to add a DoT burn effect as well.
Lightning strike has a chance to add a stun the enemy for 2 seconds.
Poison strike has a chance to add a slowing DoT effect to the enemy.
Holy strike does more damage undead and demons, even more on a critical hit.
Crushing strike is a guaranteed critical hit.
I think a cool Seven Sided Strike rune enhancement would be that with the 7th strike's blow you have a small chance to cause a cause a chain explosion of each individual corpse.

Confucius say: Go to bed with itchy butt, wake up with smell finger.
The addition of a slow/stun/interrupt . Before you attack you can choose where you finish. Instead of damage you create a pentagram looking set of walls made of pure holly energy, slowing and injuring enemies that pass through them. You dash towards a single target dealing 7 strikes which by pass armor/defense but only do a percentage of weapon damage. Seven different mOnks appear casting all of your active spells at once but in a reduced efficiency/damage. Each attack has a randomized element added to it. Every strike creates a whirlwind damaging enemies in their paths....running out of ideas.
PVP - Hit multiple players in other arena games. You can gain a higher rank if they are killed by it.
PVE - Damage is based on how many toilets you have in your house. No other formula or stat increases this skill. *I have 2 toilets, yay = 2 damage total out of 7 hits. End game skill for "Inferno" difficulty no doubt.

Crimson = fire for most, could be LIFE STEAL too! The crimson runestone gives the monk a thirst for blood, stealing life from his enemies with every strike. my favorite part of D2 is LL. used to uber with fury druid solo easy.
Indigo = ice damage and freezes target (so useful). The indigo runestone puts an icy chill in the monk's heart where it extends into his weapon, doing ice damage and freezing targets. Death animation for frozen targets could be nice.
Obsidian = black volcanic glass, sharper than any blade made by man affixed to the top of his weapon... increased damage or critical strike chance increase by 25-50% ... are they keeping open wounds? crushing blow?
Golden = increased damage to undead and knocks back or stuns demons. The golden tip of his rod is embued with the holy power of gold, doing increased damage to undead, but because gold is forged in the fires of earth, demons are not damaged, only stunned or knocked back, whatever.
Alabaster = Mana steal or INCREASED SPEED which would be sweet. The white aura of the alabaster focuses his holy power and allows him to perform the skill much faster.
Other ideas:
Increases defense while attacking
lightning damage
poison damage

You have to remember not all classes use mana matter of fact only one does.

You're right i forgot. good thing i didnt waste any imagination or serious thought on that one! increased speed is way better anyway
For multi socket items you can imagine how this skill could be amazing
increased speed plus life steal plus ice+freeze would be my choice of 3 was max sockets, but 1 will probably be it for the good stuff... speed is the one

Unleashes 7 furries that attack from all sides, causing nearby enemies to stop attacking in order to laugh at them -- essentially a 3-5 second stun.
Disclaimer: the author realizes that some/all of the skills he developed are really lame/cheesy.
First roll: Barbarian!

Alabaster: add X% Holy damage and reduces all enemies resistances by Y%
Golden: deadly strike increased by X%
