Sorry that I post yet enough Monk post. I know one exists already, but it is spaced, crowded, and beaten to the pulp with pages full of people's idiotic ramble of how a monk would not be viable as a fighting warrior. I actually did read that post, and decided to make a new one instead because I found the last one to be distasteful. Please pardon me for not wanting to waste my well thought out ideas on ramble post.
That being said, after reading that post (today, for that matter), I had mixed opinions about a Monk. Many people say good and bad things about them, but it would have been really hard for me to explain the concepts of a monk with my previous knowledge and expertise (which equaled little to none).
Now I come back here after hearing something very special. I don't personally have to tell you how viable a monk could easily be in the Diablo world, instead I would rather show you. And what better way to show you than with a documentary made by ACTUAL experts, known as nothing other than Spike TV's Deadliest Warrior.
On the show Deadliest Warrior, they pitted a Shaolin Monk vs. a Maori tribal warrior. This video isn't exactly proof that a Monk would be the best class for Diablo 3, however I will say it is pretty impressive. Those of you who say a defensive Shaolin Monk would not fare well in combat, this is the video for you.
Im sold. Bring on the fricken monk class for diablo 3. All I ask is give him some ranged skills. Or is that not appropriate for this class. Then maybe we can leave that for the fifth class.
BTW, the twin hook blads would f**k some one up. Whats cool about it especially is the medium ranged skill. The weapon is very versitile and has many uses. The class would be very fast and very agile.
I see potentially some multi kills with that medium range double blade attack. It has the most similarities to the assasin but is a lot more interesting and now you introduce culture to the character.
There is the possibility of a very interesting stroy line behind the culture of this character as well.

lol
i wouldnt see a monk having ranged skills
but maybe a extending pole kind of thing i see in TV shows xD
i could see him being awesome at gathering the enemies around him and then unleashing some kind of attack to wipe them all out in a short distance around him =3
if this happens I think their trees should be(not going to think out the skill tree names)
Passive skills
Since the recent announcement of how you can span trees I think this needs to have very powerful passive abilities. where one character may have a dodge ability, the monk would need an equal % per level parry ability leaving the enemy stunned/disarmed/0defense or something of that nature.
Weapon masteries
Lots of options but lots of rewards for specializing(and of course drawbacks) overall not as much damage as say a wizard or barbarian because that is not the true vitue of a monk.
auras/senses
my thoughts surround the first 2 trees but I supposed the third tree could be used to add that special touch to your character. monster detection. ways of exploiting enemy weaknesses such as to enrage/taunt. Lower their fighting capabilites. maybe something like concentration aura with the %uninturruptable. bassically take a page out of the defensive auras from a paladin and throw in some masteries.
The monk is going to do exactly what they usually do..Defend themselves and their community. And what does the "church" have anything to do with their culture or any one elses for that matter?
As for monks being an offensive force... sometimes the best defense is a good offense! Those monks could really kick some butt. DId you not see thier wicked blades? THey sort of remind me of warf from star trek and his scary a** blade.
I doubt anyone here would question the fighting skills of the monks, but think about the following thing - there is only place for ONE pure meelee fighting character in diablo (expansions excluded).
As for now this character is the barbarian.
Now think for a second - who would you rather play, a giant of a man clad in iron and furs, weilding weapons normal men would struggle to even lift while berserking the hell out of demons (get it? hehe) or... a five foot tall dude in a robe?
So in that aspect I would like to answer your quesion - MONK IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH NOW!
Kudos.

Monks practiced martial arts hours a day their whole life to hone concentration and discipline. How can someone who trains in a martial art all their life not be at least somewhat good at fighting?
Of course they were mostly peaceful, but the main purpose of a Shaolin Monk knowing martial arts was to fight evil and protect themselves and innocents.
So if DEMONS started pouring out of the ground I don't think they'd be hesitant to purge that evil from the world and protect all of humanity.
Also what does a church have to do with anything?
please - point me to even a one Monk in the history, that using killing force , and do PvP / PK for fun !
Please !
Actually the shaolin monks became famous in the ancient world after in a single battle they had managed to kill a lot of people using only a few monks.
Not that I think that a monk is a good class idea in diablo... BUT... the monks of old were not the meditating stage performing nice little girlscouts they are today.

They're just like anyone else, they kill in defense if needed. Of course they're not going to stand and wait to be killed, they will defend themselves. And this is demonic beings, undead, and evil enemies we're talking about not just innocent people.
As for PvP/PK, that's completely irrelevant because it makes no sense to the story of the game for ANY of the classes to be killing one another.
You're taking this way too seriously from real life also. We have a game where people can turn into werewolves, and shoot ice from their hands but one person wouldn't use killing force against demons?
Now think for a second - who would you rather play, a giant of a man clad in iron and furs, weilding weapons normal men would struggle to even lift while berserking the hell out of demons (get it? hehe) or... a five foot tall dude in a robe?
Seriously? I'd play the 5 foot tall guy in a robe. Every time.
Seriously? I'd play the 5 foot tall guy in a robe. Every time.
You kidding? I'm like 5'10, Krav Maga, bit of BJJ and Muay Thai and I could take on any guy, and weight/height easy that don't know martial arts and pretend to box. The 5 foot tall guy in a robe could kill the 6'3 250lb guy in 10 seconds tops. But what I think you're trying to say if you're gonna take on the monk cause he's gonna be more leniant with you, maybe just force you into submission by breaking a finger whereas the skinhead would just pound your face into the ground.
It depends on the Monk really. If you're talking about the Eastern Monks, they pwnd. Like blow your brains out with their fists, pwnd. If you're talking about the Western Monks, yeah, they sucked pretty hard in comparison. But I would much rather have a pwnage Monk with some crazy weaponry than a 6'9" beast of a man any day. It's more satisfying to watch something twice my height go down with a few well placed attacks with my staff than watching it go down after beating it to a pulp with two axes for about 37 minutes. It makes me happy on the inside.

I just want to say that if you beat something for 37 minutes with two axes, no way you take it down with a few well placed attacks with *your* staff.
Ofcourse this whole monk/barbarian issue is a matter of taste, but elevating your idea by diminishing the other is just dumb.

I don't mean LITERALLY beat the thing for 37 minutes. But just beating something into submission is a little boring for me. I'd rather jab a staff into some pressure points and watch him fall, twitching, to the ground.

Trust me, while you'd be looking for that pressure point with a staff, somebody else will just bash you with an axe and be done with it.
Also, the barbarian in the diablo universe is no mindless brute.
He's a weapon master, one of the best meelee fighters in the diablo universe.
Bah... why do I even explain that to you? Stay with the staff idea... whatever makes you happy.

I will, if you can show me when a demon from Hell has ever walked the face of the earth.:P
It's a game and it isn't meant to be a perfect replication of history. A monk is a useful representation of an unarmed fighter.
