I've came up with this idea of a new passive skill for the demon hunter:
Beast handler: " Unlock additional abilities for your companions."
Raven: Will periodically peck the eyes of your enemies, blinding them for 2 secs.
Spider: its attacks have a chance to inject a paralyzing venom on the victim, rooting them in place for 2 secs.
Ferrets: They periodically jump to your enemies, reducing their attack speed by %30 for 2 secs.
Boar: Its tusks gore your enemies, causing them to bleed for X weapon damage over 2 secs..
Bat: Periodically lets out a terrifying screech, fearing the enemies for 2 secs.
Wolf: Its ferocious presence encourages you, increasing your damage by %10 and attack speed by 5%.
The idea is to make the companions have more flavor and presence in the battlefield, giving the DH more of a ranger feeling.
The percentages and durations can, of course, be modified for balancing reasons.
Well thought out, but i believe passives should atleast influence 2 or more skills. IT doesn't seem likely a DH will consider the passive unless it garnered some huge bonuses for those pets.

mmm, you are right. Ok, some additional bonuses that I can think of could be:
" and while you pet is active, regenerate 1 discipline per second." ( I think there is no other skill regenerates disc. over time, except for obsidian Preparation.)
"and increases your resistances by %35" (in this case, I think the skill should be renamed "Survivalist" or " Into the wild", something like that that denotes endurance in the wilderness)
" and lets you dual wield melee weapons." (lol wouldn't that be cool.)
Other things like lifesteal, dmg increase, more speed, critical and hatred generation are included in other skills, so I wouldn't mix them here in order to keep it original/creative.
like having 2! of them, and ofc let the bonuses stack
everyone knows that all BADASS rangers have 2! pets!
That would be great too, but i think it would only be cool with the boar or the wolf. I mean, having 1 spider or 2 doesnt seem so much threatening. The same applies with the raven, bat and ferrets (which are already 2). Maybe something that gave you velociraptors or sharks with freaking lasers attached to their heads...
I like you regen discpline idea for a trapper build who plans to always have a summon companion while dropping sentries and other traps. This would allow them to use more evasive skills aswell which a trapper would probably need.

Those are slighty unbalanced I think, who wouldn't run with a wolf? lol.

To start with, the numbers are just to give an idea of how it would work. It could end being just 5% for both, or only 10% increased dmg. Some number to make it attractive, yet balanced and non-mandatory. Also, the dps and attack speed are very useful against bosses, but gives you no survivabilty, like the bat or the raven. The spider is for kiting ofc (combined with Cull the weak would give you more dps than the wolf) and the boar is more of a pve aoe dmg dealer.
I tried to make each skill fit in a different scenario or adapt to the strategy that each one has, while remaining realistic to the concept of each companion.

Thx! That could be a very good use of it. Hadn't seen it in that way. Good suggestion.

When did Skyrim get so cool!?
On topic: Nice, reasonable idea. Good thought
