Oh I don't know, maybe to get more damage reduction perhaps? You know, that's kinda what shields are nominally for? Maybe a little extra damage too if you only have one good 1h weapon?
The DH has too many slows, snares, stuns, and escapes to even consider using a shield as a viable replacement for two one handed xbows, a two handed xbow, or a two handed bow. The entire point of having one handed xbows is to duel wield them not to have one and a shield. If you use a shield on a demon hunter you are doing it wrong.

Why don't you go play hardcore mode and then get back to us.
I play hardcore exclusively back on Diablo 2, and now beta testing diablo 3, I can honestly say there is almost no reason not to use a shield with a one hander on all classes. The added ac mitigation bonus alone is huge.
Your attack speed and damage remains the same (you just cycle two 1 handers if you have them equipped) and the armor and block bonus can more then make up for some class specific bonus's that you may get on a quiver or 1hand xbow.
The only reason I could see you would want to run two 1 handed bows would be to cycle on hit affects like life steal and snare on two different weapons, or make use of a set bonus.

my bad on this, just checked character sheet on beta, adding a 2nd 1 hand bow changes attacks per second from 1.8 up to 2.07
Adding a low level shield adds usually either around 60 hps (i have 320 total at level 13) or around 11-15 defense (adding 15% total damage mitigation at that level) and obviously including ac mitigation of 7% on melee and 14% chance to block 14-20 damage.
regular 2 hand bow is 1.47 attacks per second. with 3% attack speed bonus quiver its up to 1.5 attacks per second
15% attack speed is going to be hard to pass up even for that added mitigation in hardcore, especially if you get some decent stats off the 2nd 1 hander.
Shield are a great option, in any of the 5 classes.
The DPS difference between one handed and two handed weapons are just avarage. About 45%. The shields bonus for defence are rather significant, however.
I'm pretty sure 1 pistol xbox + shield > dual wielding. Right now dual wield just suck (15% bonus is not enough to replace a two handed weapon or an shield).

There is absolutely no way that this is true unless you plan on playing your DH as a melee character. As a DH you should never be getting close enough for anything to try to hit you, if you are, you need some avoidance skills. You want to shoot as rapidly as possible to maintain maximum mobility. If monsters are close enough to you that you need a shield, you're already in serious trouble, if it happens frequently enough to be a problem you're either playing a "unique" build or you're out of practice.
Personally I'm looking forward to enchanting my weapon with cold damage and having a machine gun of slow effect on enemies I attack.

I play hardcore, I'll be using a shield.
I have a hard time believing all enemies in the game will be super easy to avoid just because you pick evasive fire and the tumbling skill... especially as you get to the later difficulties.
You can do more damage and die more often. I will do less damage and live.

You've to understand that kiting is not allways the best tatic for DPS. While kiting your character actually loose time (and resource) that could be used in killing enemies faster. Just stand still and let that monster hit you a few times might be better then retreat, if you're able to tank that damage.
Also some ranged attacks (specially arrows that are to fast to be constantly avoided) might be nuinssance. If you plan to avoid all arrows your DPS will surely abyss drop. Shields are surely welcomed in those situation, specially if it has anti-ranged mods (like reduced damaghe from missiles).
Now if you still don't want an shield, you should try a bow or a crossbow. The DPS difference between 1 and 2 handed weapons are around 45%. 15% Attack Speed bonus will almost never compensate, not to mention the fact that you will need TWO high rolls in order to dual wield, or else your DPS will decrease if you equip your second weapon.
Dual Wield right now is bullshit. Equiping a item in an open slot should NEVER reduces your character strength. And it's happen in the great majority of the times when you equip a second 1h weapon.
There is something I'd like to mention that alot you guys are forgetting about dual wielding.
You get the bonuses from both weapons. Now... I understand that alot of bonuses are weapon specific... and will only affect the hits with that weapon, but bonuses that are character (+X precision/Attack/etc) stack. Depending on how blizzard codes other afixes, possible stats like +X% crit damage might stack too.
If stats like +x% crit damage stack, then dual wielding will rock as the demon hunter is supposed to be a crit god(dess), and the faster the AS, the more often crit procs.

Can Demon hunter use a 1h xbow and shield?
.
My PvP build would be different from these 13.

Sorry, off topic: But your pic is bad-ass man! Why couldn't that be the DH's hatred and discipline orb!
