Agreed, grenades seem like such potential for an awesome skill, but in the beta they just look like a bunch of duds. What I would like to see is an animation more akin to when the witch doctor blows up his zombie dogs. Impale looks like an amazing skill, and I think it will probably see a lot of use in the PvP arena because of its high damage bonus and instant hit from a distance. It would definitely be a great way to get around skills that could really hinder a demon hunter in the arena, like slow time.
Part of the failure with grenades is they just do crap damage (Fan of Knives has the same issue). I've tossed three sets of grenades into a group and had all of them hit without killing anything.
Yes, the damage on grenades is bad, but I think its more than that. For example, the damage of Fan of Knives is also very weak in the beta but it feels awesome to use. It has that "ohh yea" feeling to it. For me at least, grenades doesn't have that feeling. It just feels off.
Another thing about grenades, even post-change, is that they really should be awesome. I don't like that grenades are a hatred generator, because in my opinion/my expectation would be that when you throw a handful of grenades at people, they should all go BOOOM!! That should be a huge effect, and the big effects go on the spenders, yes? Part of the problem I see with the grenades is that there are only three of them and they spread out in a strange line (have you ever scattered seeds/pebbles/anything and had them land in a line perpendicular to you?), pause a little, don't even end up where you thought they would (they bounce a little past your cursor), don't interact with anything inbetween you and the target(physics issue I wouldn't expect to be addressed at all), and then the fuse on them is just too long for a far too unsatisfying boom.
I want a fast spray of grenades (like a handful of 5-7 grenades) that fan out seemingly randomly (probably in a fixed spread, but not in any easy to recognize geometric shape) and explode almost on contact with the enemies for a nice satisfying blast sending targets flying and showing off some moon physics when it gets kills. This may need to be a rune effect on the skill, but still, the grenades are subpar in almost every way in the current beta implementation. Just my opinion...
As grenades has been changed alot from the current beta it isnt the damage that worries me (as both grenades and fan of knives seemed almost broken), but as snowhammer says that certain feeling of using it.
I guess its an issue of balance now that the skill is a hatred generator. If both aoe and damage of the skill is very good, ALSO getting 24 hatred from it (when runed) seems kind of imbalanced.
Hatred generators are supposed to be/look less powerful than spenders i guess, so i doubt we will see any changes that makes it look more powerful. Luckily we have a similiar skill in spenders - cluster arrow, that both looks better and is more powerful.

Basically just a collection of screen shots and random thoughts on all the Demon Hunters skills.
Have a looksy:

Hopefully weapon damage scaling fixes that.
