Imho "demon hunter" is rather bland and boring for this class.
Granted I don't have a better idea for a name at the current moment but I really think this class should be renamed to something more fitting to its play style. I mean, "demon hunter"... Aren't all the classes effectively demon hunters as well, lol? I mean... They all hunt demons anyway... It just seems rather unfitting and boring.
I think the contrary: Demon Hunter is quite a good name. It's a hunter that doesn't hunt prey with a bow, but it hunts demons with a bow, thus: Demon Hunter.
So in the prior case we would've called it a prey hunter? We don't need to be specific about what is actually being hunted.
"Demon Hunter" is perfect in my opinion. The other classes aren't "demon hunters" because they do not treat the demons like prey, they just go out and kill evil...but the DH, she preemptively thinks of how to kill demons. She plans her moves, and stalks her prey, like a hunter/predator. This is why she is called the Demon Hunter.

So if she runs into the undead I guess shes out of luck according to this analysis.
I did not say undead are demons. If you attempt to make sly remarks, try to read what I say first.
I repeat what I said: "The undead are risen by demonic powers."
This is evident from what the NPCs tell you in Diablo II alone, for example the undead in act I were disturbed by Diablo's presence (or rather the dark wanderer's) and thus rose from their graves.
Quote from "Warriv, Introduction speech to the game" »
I dont' know if I believe that, but a Dark Wanderer did travel this route few a weeks ago.
He was headed east to the mountain pass guarded by the rogue monastery.
Maybe it's nothing, but evil seems to have trailed in his wake.
You see, shortly after the Wanderer went through, the Monastery's Gates
to the pass were closed and strange creatures began ravaging the countryside.
If you played diablo 2 you would know this.
So according to you, a necromancer raising a skeleton is demonic? I don't think so. A necromancer isn't a demon.
But cool story bro, keep making stuff up. Can't wait to hear the next strawman argument. And no, nothing of which he does is demonic. It's necromantic magic, not demonic. But can still command the "UNDEAD".
But all I'm saying is, I don't think "DEMON HUNTER" Fits at all, not at all. It's like saying...
"bear hunter" and is exclusively unique at killing bears. Lol it just doesn't make much sense especially when all the other classes are just as powerful and can kill demons as easy if not easier than this class can. I just think calling this class a "demon hunter" is absurd and actually it just sounds bad to me.
Not to mention people are going to start calling it DH for short online and the only DH I want to see online is in warcraft 3.
I agree with the OP- the name is bland and boring. But I don't see how it is a problem. Fits the character perfectly well.
Don makes also a very good point. The name is simple and easy to grasp which is the key thing here I believe. Case in point Shelledface, seeing you had no alternative suggestion to make for Demon Hunter.
Personally, I would have preferred they'd called her Christina Aguliera but then the male version would have to have a different name you see...
As for the debate that every class kills demons. The reason this class is called demon hunter is because her solepurpose for fighting this evil is just to kill demons. She has no grand plan of glory or respect or saving the world. It is pure revenge and wants to kill as many demons as she can.
As for the argument about the term demon. Demon is a word that is used very liberally in the world of sanctuary. While there are specific demons, the undead, corrupted, and beasts can all be categorized as demons as far as the people of sanctuary is concerned.

Use your imagination and don't take everything so literally.
"Demon Hunter" was most likely a name given to them by the common people of Sanctuary because they "hunt" and kill demons/undead.
Now tell me, what is the significant difference between a demon and an undead(most likely brought to "life" by a direct relation to the actions of Diablo).
You assume that the people of Sanctuary know as much as us, but when the world is beng attacked by forces from Hell, I think it is pretty safe to assume they shove demons and undead into the same category; it's not like they both can't be killed in the same fashion anyway. Adding onto this, perhaps demon hunting is her specialty.
I think disliking the name because she kills more than just demons is a bit nitpicky. However, Ophion has a much more valid argument.
My responce to Ophion is, and this is just my imagination, that they was most likely given the title by the people of Sanctuary. Probably just one of those things where the word started to spread of some elite warriors going around stalking Diablo's minions and killing them in revenge. The people naturally came up with a name, and "Demon Hunter" is a decent desription of what they do. Similarly, the witch doctor I relate to titles we have in our everyday life, like in African/S. American tribes. For me, that is justification enogh for the lack of an "archetype" and it is actually kind of refreshing.
What other name could there be?
"Hunter"? No, if I told you I was a hunter in an everyday conversation, killing demons is probably not the first thing that would come to your mind; whether we were in Sanctuary or on Earth.
"Diablo's minion slayer"? This is discriptive, but has no flow and also doesn't sound very badass.
"Archer"? No, she uses crossbows and other weapons not related to an archer (like grenades).
"Demon Hunter" works because she kills demons and demon related things. It gives a distinct description of what she does and it flows off the tongue. The reason they put "demon" infront of hunter is much to make a distinction from a regular hunter and these people, who are hunting beasts much more foul than your average boar(a real life example of this, think "Witch Hunter").
So in the prior case we would've called it a prey hunter? We don't need to be specific about what is actually being hunted.
If Blizzard had named the class just 'Hunter', it would have brought so strong WoW stereotypes that fans would have sharpened their pitchforks and lit their Molotov cocktails ready to usurp the heathen enemy.
Well by just calling it 'Demon Hunter' it brings both WoW and WC3 stereotypes, Illidan, the demon hunter hero class, the demon hunter fanbase, night elves, blood elves, illidari, etc.
Its not like Diablo has been known for its out-there class naming. In D1, it was:
Melee weapons and heavy armor - Warrior
Bows and arrows - Rouge
Spellcaster - Sorcerer
Obviously not very complicated, but its effective because those names immediately bring to mind what the class is. Same thing goes for D2:
Big looking guy with war paint - Barbarian
Tough warrior woman - Amazon
Guy who raises the dead - Necromancer
Holy warrior - Paladin
Spellcaster - Sorceress
Guy who summons spirits and shapeshifts - Druid
Sneaky with traps and finishing moves - Assassin
And in D3 they continue that same theme of simple names that immediately bring to mind what the class is. And another thing I think people are overlooking is that "Demon Hunter" is, to me, a play on "Bounty Hunter" more than anything. I feel like the DH approaches her task of killing demons in a very bounty hunter way. She has all the gadgets she can get her hands on, she's a shady character, and she's incredibly determined. Sounds like Boba Fett to me. Even if you don't like the names of the D3 classes, its hard to deny that when you hear each classes name, they make sense for the character's design. Witch Doctor immediately says "voodoo." Monk is probably the most in the air, but in the Diablo world you'd probably think of a kung-fu monk before a...not-kung-fu monk.
Considering the classes they put in the game, they really seem to have given them the best names that still bring to mind what the class is all about.
Rogue? Pretty much the same thing without the darkness theme.
I don't know, to me, the demon hunter is more than a rogue, or a mere ranger. She is fueled by this hatred to make these demons feel how the people of Sanctuary feel, how she felt. She wants to turn them into the prey, rather than the predator; She is the lion, the hunter, and they are the helpess frightened antelope.
Also, since DHs have no set background, this opens the door to endless possibilites. Your DH could have been training to be a rogue when her town was over taken by demons, she escaped the attacks and was discovered by a "demon hunter" and set her eyes on the quest for revenge.
Well using the Rogue would just make it so that they would be reusing a character for no reason. The Rogue (judging by the Act 1 merc in D2) can't use crossbows, and therefore wouldn't be able to use dual crossbows. She also didn't use traps or shadow magic. I think there are significant enough differences to bring in an entirely new class, and whenever they can do that, imo, it should be done, as it just makes it seem like theres more reason to pick up an entirely new game. D3's DH is a nice twist on the ranged class, even if you don't like the name. Most of the time you'll only be seeing "DH" anyways. Overall the shadowy feel of the class belongs in the Diablo universe and the name at least gives you a good idea as to what she's all about.
Doesn't it say somewhere in the background info for DIII that even though Tyreal destroyed the worldstone, the demons haven't come through to attack yet? Isn't that why Cain has been staying around and researching shit? So why would there be a necessity for a DEMON HUNTER if there really aren't that many demons? Or maybe I'm mistaken. But still, I think the name could be better.

There hasn't been a large scale invasion as anticipated by the people who know about the destruction of the Worldstone, but Sanctuary still has problems with demons raiding towns and the like. All DH's are survivors of some kind of demonic massacre.
Of course the names have different meanings, but that is quite irrelevant as the lore behind her would obviously be changed to suit the name. A Rogue with shadow magic and an urge to slay demons wouldn't really make a lot of sense.
Rogues already exist in Diablo, so it wouldn't be hard for players to grasp the concept of a Rogue class. It could use ranged attacks, traps, and some kind of third element instead of dark magic. The gameplay would be the same, the story a little different, but the name would be much better imo.
I personally think that the DH has awesome lore. My reason for feeling this is the way that it leaves it up to my imagination to fill in the huge gaps(i.e. pre-recruitment and post). The only limitation is that we know she is driven by revenge and she trained to become a demon hunter in the Dreadlands and I love the idea of killing for revenge rather than glory or to prove something. So, changing that lore is way worse than having a "cooler name"(to me, Rogue is a linear move). Of course, this is all based on opinion so I repect yours and have no hard feelings if you disagree  .
Although, a name change is probably out of the question anyways so neener neener neeeener
U guys want a name? How about night stalker ? or shadow rogue or "nightwing clan" or something.
or simple plain "assassin". Anything is better than "demon hunter". OOooooo demon hunter. I'm guessing he/she hunts demons? lol.
wait wait guys, I know what class the expansion will have. Undead hunter. LOL!!! Yeah instead of a paladin it will be called "undead hunter". Or maybe "death knight" lol.

This. I've always thought about this. It's really stupid.
Then again... they could of called it... "Shadow Warrior" *Shiver*
This.
