So I've got Ancient: Manticore, Valla's, Natalya's, Danetta's, Greenstone's, Karlei's - basically everything except Yang's. I've been re-rolling an extra I have using the bounty mats recipe in the cube.
I've also done blood shards because I didn't feel like thinking.
A friend told me I should be upgrading rares for it, and I've done some of that but no dice. I wanted to see how other folks are getting theirs.
I tried the yellow to legendary reroll and got a few regular Yang's which I then used one of to try and reroll into an Ancient. I ran out of mats somewhere in the 20s of the reroll, went farming and found my ancient. So as stated, RNG is RNG but the legendary reroll will be your best option.
You need on average 10688 bloodshards for one Yang's Recurve; that's roughly 107k bloodshards for an ancient one.
You need on average 181 Death's Breath for one Yang's Recurve; that's roughly 2000 (and 4k of each other mat) for an ancient one.
You can run bounties and re-roll one; for 10 re-rolls you'll need 5 entire bonus bounty runs on T10 plus 500 Forgotten Souls.
I'd estimate about 1.5 to 2 hours for the bounty runs, and 2 to 3 hours of T10 rifts for the materials (and way more hours to get the bloodshards).
So TL;DR: Bounties > upgrading rares > gambling.
However, I personally can't stand bounties, so my rule of thumb is the following:
If the item is around 200 DB upgrade cost, I'll upgrade rares (2000 DB to get an ancient aren't that much if you're using a Sage's Set on wizard to farm T10)
If the item is an armor item and relatively common (like set items) I'll also gamble for them - it will give me an additional chance plus the rares that I can later upgrade, so I don't need to craft them
I only run bounties for very rare items that can't be efficiently upgraded/gambled but are very important, such as Wand of Woh.
I've been superlucky this season (or unlucky..). I've died about 6 times with my UE DH in hardcore this season but I've always been able to get an ancient yangs pretty fast after. 4 of the times it's been through upgrading rares. The other 2 by rerolling a non-ancient. I never spend blood shards on weapons because I dont feel like the price is justified. I rather try rolling ancient armors for the blood shards instead.
Upgrade rares. Once you get a non-ancient one then reforge it if you have the souls. If not keep farming dbs and upgrading rares.
Gamble for a few 2 handed weps just to tell the loot system that's what you need, but don't expect to get one from Kadala.
I dont think anyone is as bad luck as me. Para 800 now and re-rolled over 30 times and crafted numerous rares and still no ancient yang!. I am about to give up on my DH and move on.
Oh trust me. I craft with rares as well as re-rolling. I crafted another bunch of rares last night...got 5 Yangs but all non-ancient. RNG is RNG...I will eventually get one.
Yellows to Legendary is by far the easiest way. Craft the yellow and save any you pick up.
I suppose if you had about a thousand forgotten souls you could gather enough bounty mats. My character has almost 2000. But I don't think you need to go that route for your first bow.
I'm strugling very much with mats for both rerolling stats and items
No ancient bow, but I can still wreck T12, så any input on how to farm mats fast is very much welcome
pick a difficulty where you can kill elites fast, and either do normal rifts or bounties ignoring trash mostly. To do this efficiently you need to optimize your setup. Check the builds section, demon hunter forums, subreddit right column for recent speedfarm builds.
You really do not need all this to be able to 1-2 shot elites in T13..
Already not with my gear I can 2-3 shot elites, and I really need quite some upgrades still, I don't have a single argument on my gear and only around 700 paragons..
Here is what I roll with: http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Dechau-1122/hero/81758691
My guess is, the gear you mention is for 1-2 shotting in GR75
Dear Lunity, this was a hot topic just before the 2.4.2 release.

Re rolling? I've read this many times above-sorry I'm still trying to get my head around crafting.... don't you mean reforming from legendary to ancient legendary?

After 28 rerolls on the cube i got my ancient today! (20 minutes after that another one dropped...)
You can always do both Reroll + upgrade... I was doing 2 rerolls at a time, today i decided to do 8 in a row and i got it on my 6th.
Well, I started a DH as secondary in the season. Literally the 3rd bow I crafted (upgrade from yellow to leg in cube) was an ancient Yang.
A few rifts after that another ancient Yang dropped. I got another normal Yang and yesterday another ancient one, this here:

However, with other bows, especially Manticore (though I got one ancient now) I'm not so lucky.
My D3 armory
My Youtube Channel
I got mine from Kanai's Cube. It's great, man.
I farmed mats for days to keep rerolling a crappy Yangs. Never got one.
I then upgraded 70 yellow rare bows to legendary, and got an ancient yang.
Looking at this table here...
I'd estimate about 1.5 to 2 hours for the bounty runs, and 2 to 3 hours of T10 rifts for the materials (and way more hours to get the bloodshards).

Update... died again yesterday. Upgraded rare... first one ancient. Rucky!
with a LOT of upgrading rares or rerolling normal yangs i got a not so well rolled ancient yangs.
Still trying but not much luck. upgrading rares this time was unlucky experience this season, it was even very hard to get a normal yangs.
I was paragon 628 before i got my first.
Always seem to be 1 item each season that is hard to get.
This season i got so many ramaladni's gift, where last season i had only seen 2

Finally rerolled one last night. Maybe around my 40th roll...not including the rare bow crafts.

Quivers are a better way to spend blood shards.

You need optimum gear with full +70-80 augments, perfect stat combo and rolls and +1500P to be able to 1-2 shot elites in TXIII, especially with UE..
