Theres some runes for Blessed Shield that is rather ambigous in what damage type they are.
The base skill is marked as holy, but it makes no mention of doing holy damage.
I like using Shattering Throw rune, which is marked as Holy, but says nothing about actually doing holy damage. Should I find +holy items to buff it with?
And just how much damage does +block actually add to a skill like Blessed Shield? Plugging Hold your ground seems to bring far less than Finery.
As far as I know if an ability has an element linked to it like fire then it's a fire ability. If you get something that adds 10% to all fire skills then that skill will hit 10% harder.

For example, look at the combust rune, it says the bonus damage is fire. But is the base skill damage fire as well there?
Hey Presto: All your runes now have colour coding to let you know what school they are
