So, I'm leveling a new Barbarian right now and want to start gearing him to actually "feel" like a berzerker. I don't need this guy to be a super BiS Barb, I just want what's feels fun, 'cuz that's how I like to play mah D3. I don't use the AH and only use items that I craft or find on other characters.
My request is just some input: How would you build a barbarian to actually feel specialized in being a berzerker? If you would like to suggest abilities (w/ runes), gear affixes or comment on some ways that I might achieve this, please feel free!
My idea of a berzerker is as follows:
Somewhat low HP for a melee class, but higher evade/resist.
High crit chance and attack speed
Life regen, either through abilities or basic attacks (like a bloodthristy savage)
High mobility
A focus on single target damage
actives:
Berserkers shout, charge into a battle and smash bastards with some kickass huge weapon, while killing hordes of unworthy pathetic fiends with broad swipes.
passives:
more enemies = better, more fury = better, cracking bone = like a song for their ears
Many people use build like this one you just posted. I do use one of them but in higher monster power, you do need the passive of 3% life steal if you don't have a life steal weapon or only the belt with life steal.
With my gear equipped I farm mp10 pretty easy. As you can see i use the merciless rune with the charge. Since monsters you enconters are always over 5 monsters, charge becomes my first damage skill. Also adding rend with bloodlust to your build make your even more unstoppable.
@Tequila, you know, I actually used to have Leap in my build along with Furious Charge. Was really, really mobile! I might use it again. What rune do you think fits Leap for a berzerker? Toppling Impact? Death from Above?
@Aldoran, I like the shouts, ALOT! Do you prefer a 2H weapon over two 1H? I go with dual weild and would like to hear (read?) more!
@vingor, not too worried about farming high MP right now. I think I'm going to just have fun until the itemization patch hits. Then gear out. I'm so torn about how to make this guy feel awesome! I could either go no Fury Spenders with the Berzerker Rage passive, or take the life regen runes from Frenzy and Rend to keep health up. I could go AoE Zerker with Seismic Slam and the Strength from Earth rune. Just not sure. What do you think?
A couple things that I know I want this build to revolve around also are these:
Frenzy ability
Axes
Single Target, but not be completely useless against large hordes

if you talk about Barbarianship - 2H is the only way to go, imho ) in rl DW fencing is supposed to be used in a defensive style, with 2h you just smash things, lika a true barbarian )
If you talk gameplay wise - Skorn(the only viable 2h) is much cheaper, and you can start rolling high MPs very fast, but 2 perfect onehanders with high dps, socket, str and CD will give you much more. and they cost hundreds millions - billions
Hm... stunning them is nice with Death from Above. Toppling Impact feels good for a more heavyset minded barb, jumping around like a bowling ball and knocking everything away - but it's a bit of a pain to play like that.
I always liked Call of Arreat. Land, grab everything right next to you, overpower, charge out, and call it a day.
Also depends on the type of berserker... to me I think of an axe throwing berserker. So a little weapon throw is never a bad thing either.

If you want to be effective with AoE you were right, I also like the seismic slam with the fury cost reduced, you can spam this and mobs are getting knocked back a lot, which gives some protection.
On single target with no fury spender o/c frenzy is great. But I wouldn't use the life rune of frenzy if you are going to use rend with bloodlust rune, it gives enough health. Plus if you get a life steal belt, you will have enough life from rend and the belt.
O/C frenzy isnt that great for AoE but with the revenge skill and the charge does nice damage too ( i would recommend you to try the merciless assault rune, it is so funny to charge with no cooldown, you do a lot of damage there and then lots of life from life steal ). Furious charge as i use it, keeps my fury always full. I charge, rend, charge, charge, charge, rend, repeat. So with the berserker passive it is insane, i just tested it and i reach 500k at max fury.
So I've been playing consistently with groups and found that Frenzy seems to really suck for groups. Everyone plays MP0 pre-60. Can't keep stacks up. I've switched to Bash w/ Punish and use HotA w/Smash. Combined with everything else its been a really awesome Dual Wield build. Anyone know if Frenzy gets better in Inferno with higher MP?

Not typically since it's not going to match the single-target DPS of something like HotA: Smash, and it won't generate the fury of Bash (especially with Instigation) or the damage bonus of Bash: Punish for secondary skills. It will do more single-target damage than Bash if you can keep it 5-stacked long enough, but those situations are rare enough that I think Bash is just better.

...and if you disagree with me, you're probably <insert random ad hominem attack here>.
I kinda hope they go back and reevaluate every skill and rune combination. Frenzy used to be awesome and I miss it being that way.
It's like a bitter ending to a really serious relationship lol.
I'll give it a try once I start doing Paragon levels on MP and elites don't die in 5 seconds.

Too many skills... too few slots...
