If I remember correctly they've in the past (not far past, quite recently) said that the Barbarian was the Only class returning in the Vanilla, they did however say the possability of the Necromancer returning in an Expansion (They did not say there would be just 1 expansion) existed.
I got the feeling reading the article that you linked had the context taken out. All things are the same in the eye of scrutiny.
The necromancer does have place for improvement, but not a whole lot like the Barbarian.
(They did not say there would be just 1 expansion)
This is one thing I'm hoping for... short of WoW (which doesn't count imo) they have only released one expansion per game... and an RPG such as Diablo... can utilize multiple expansions far better to continue the life of the product. I mean D2 classic was almost NOTHING like D2:LOD. They could have changed the skills more or added up to level 36/42 skills, but the game still changed drastically and increased the life of the game by a large amount.
The necromancer does have place for improvement, but not a whole lot like the Barbarian. I agree that the Barb was the character needing the most improvement... his abilities apart from whirlwind were very boring, and he wasn't overly well designed... The Paladin had the same problem, until they made Hammer rediculously over powered.
In regards to a possible return by the Necromancer... it would have to be different to the D2 version significantly... my favourite suggestion from someone so far has been a sort of death knight, evil warrior advocate. With a Poison/Shadow (caster) tree, A Bone/Summoning tree (limited emphasis on summons, and some classic bone spells) and a Curses/Torture tree (emphasis on physical damage, but more intricate than using brute force like the barbarian)

"If we're actually making the game worse with no other reason than to be different from WoW, then it's a bad choice." - Jay Wilson (D3 lead designer)
I am a necromancer fan and i find it interesting that they will replace that class with the witch doctor but they couldnt think of a new one to replace the barbarian... just dosent seem fair as i was never really a big fan of the barbarian.
Aw waahh :(... lets design the game around what suits you... lol
Personally, I think they will in essence be keeping the same character concepts just changing them slightly and making new names.
Sure they wont have a "sorcerress" but im certain there will be a pure spellcaster (like a wizard, mage, conjorer etc...) with similar spells and skill tree concepts.
I really hope they have a character really similar to the Sorceress. I loved a magic class with 3 different elements to choose from. I had one of each tree and enjoyed them all. =)
What makes you think there not i hope they do paladin was always the most cominly played and the leader of the group. and if its cause Blizzard says so they always change there mind for example in order to become a death knight in Lich king u had to of had a level 80 paladin but now its just a level 55 character of any class, Also they might since Blizzard arent the real creators they just funded it the real creators are Flagship Studios creators of hellgate london.
just read my post on the previous page... never forget him and he will never be gone
Doesnt really explain why he wouldnt be gone but i will miss the necromancer but god help us if the paladin is not in the game honestly and i think they should add the feature to be female or male thats why i dont like playing Sorceress there should be Sorcerer sorry if spelling is wrong.
i think that what Blizzard should do is have the three other classes to be completely new but for the expansion have a fan vote (via their website) and have the top 2 or 3 out of the remaining 6 from D2 and put them in with the expansion just so they keep some of the fans happy.

Lol :)... no lets not base a game around me since lets face it im not interesting enough
But still lets try and think of some good subs for the barbarian just for shits and giggels... look at the witch doctor he looks awesome for replacing the spot of the necromancer, hopefully that class will take that type of game play and put it at a whole new level.
Why not just add some WD original skills to the necromancer original set? It's not like they are doing anything too original...
Well I think it's because the summons/ WD unique skills make more sense on the WD. Like a WD breathing locusts onto things, the way mongrels look, or raising walls of zombies. Witch Doctors are known for raising zombies. Not that necros aren't it just fits a Witch Doctor more to me.
If the Witch Doctor was summoning skeletons I'd think to myself it should be a Necromancer skill.
Hmm, intresting. I heard that Blizzard North's plans were to make all new classes anyway. This comes close. I agree with Wilson said, the Barb was a terribly designed class in D2, and it would be pointless to bring the Necro back because he's pretty much perfectly designed in D2.

And The Heavens Shall Tremble...
"my work here is finished"
"sisters, there was no other way"
"my duty here is done"
" I have earned the right to this abandoned trove"
"this will help the sisters turn the tide against evil"
"this holy place has been desecrated"
"there is great, evil here"
"evil dwells within this cave"
"this tower shall be cleansed of evil"
"this is no place for a warrior to die"
"even the light cannot pierce this gloom"
"i will cleanse this wilderness"
"maybe Akara could dispel the mystery of these stones"
"this tree bristles with magic"
"what a tragic end to Tristram"
"Deckerd Cain leave quickly!"
"what evil taints the light of the sun?"
"I pray that Atma will rest easy now"
"rest in peace tortured soul"
"the light can never be extinguished by evil"
"light willing this treasure will help put an end to this stifling evil"
"I shall honor tal rashas sacrifice by destroying all of the prime evils"
"this surely is the product of a twisted mind"
"light guide my way in this accursed place"
"the foul stench of evil assails me"
"is this the tomb i seek?"
"surely the evil here has driven you mad"
"here at last is a fitting testament in stone to Tal Rashas sacrifice"
"hmmm just a large mound, there is nothing to fear here"
"by the light!, what prevents my approach?
"this trove will help lift the curse from Kurast"
"the temple will shine anew with the light"
"this blade shall pierce the heart of evil"
"immortal huh? if this koo-e-lay was so powerful why is he now entombed within this receptacle"
"the lord of hatred shall darken the world no longer"
"may the black book deliver us from evil"
"the smell of death or worse, surrounds me"
"this corrupted temple was once the shinning heart of my religion"
"this appears to control the ancient valves"
"this must be where the Horadrim imprisoned Mephisto"
"perhaps i could trade this for something more valuable"
"the black book, it's heresy to the Zakarum high council"
"how can one who was once so holy fall so far from righteousness"
"let Diablo's death end the reign of the three"
"Baal, you shall no longer taint this mortal realm"
"Harrogath is free of your kind, Demon"
"the summit, the Barbarian holy ground"
"by the light, what is this place?"
"Baal, I'm coming for you"
"the worldstone, praise the light"
"may the light shine forevermore"
But it is good that we're getting new characters, If we just got all of the old ones I'd be disappointed...

Well those things aren't part of their skill set yet but yes, Witch Doctors are known for curses. Voodoo etc.
I'm sure we'll see a good abundance of new spells though.
