Skill placement as follows: 20 points ice bolt 20 points orb 20 points cold mastery 20 points telekinesis 1 point in all lightning or fire skills and the rest of the skill points into energy shield
I'm sure someone will disagree with me, but that's how i've always built my forb MF sorcs, always worked out awesomely.
Seems really interesting. I know very little about the sorc in d2. When I played, I played a barbarian mostly.
Why 20 points in telekinesis, and why no teleport (I thought it was OP~!)
Also, why 1 points in all lightning or fire skills? Just to get around resistances?

Telekenesis is just handy to have
Obviously get teleport
1 point in all skills, because once you've got fully decked out in gear you have such high +skill that 1 point becomes 20, allowing you to bypass resistances whilst doing hectic damage
I'd like to try lightning for fun, but the damage variance + the scattered lightning bolts from charged bolt = suck
I'm currently playing lightning, and it is pretty good. You really don't notice the damage variance all that much. You lay stuff out just as often as you might roll low, but overall it still seems pretty effective at blowing things up.
The scattering of charged bolt is kinda bad if you're far away, but with a 2nd Act Merc tanking, it is easy to get up close, and Charged bolt doesn't have the variance of other spells. So getting up close and landing all the bolts will really blast something.
Mostly I'm using lightning and sometimes chain lightning on scattered weak/fast mobs.
