Title says it all. I've been a Diablo fan for ages, but after many years of not playing it, I am dusting it off for another spin. Now, I've never had a max lvl character, heck, I don't even remember if I finished the game on Normal mode. So, where do I get started? I've found tons of guides, but most of them assume (it seems)that you have a high level to gear your toon, or friends to do runs. Should I get through Normal mode as quickly as possible? Are doing multiple runs on certain encounters (i.e Countess for Runes) on Normal mode even worth it? The amount of knowledge and theorycrafting available for a game that's been running for 10 years now is so vast, it's pretty intimidating for a noob like myself. Any advice for a more or less D2 virgin would be great, classes/builds I should look at as a beginner etc etc. Thanks in advance.
Well if you want to get a high lvl fast. Try to get someone to rush you for your forge, you ask people in the chat this and you can even make a game called "rush me 4 forge" or sumthing like that. If you don't wanna do it that way or nobody wants to rush you just start Trist running and then Tombs runs I guess.. I'm not sure I always just get rushed lol.. The point tho for it to go real fast is to get someone to Glitch-rush you or "G-rush", this is called g-rush because you can't leave normal difficulty before you are lvl 25(? not sure on this) so there's gotta be someone who needs the quest for Baal that is lvl 25 or more, and you wait in town as that person gets the quest you get it too, which is a glitch :P.
Anyways.. If you do a Char on Non-Ladder I'll gladly help you, If not I can't cuz my chars on ladder suck lol.

I have no idea what you're talking about, lol. Rush me for my forge? What does that mean? What is the point of running Tristram repeatedly in Normal? What is Tombs? See, I said I was a noob. Thanks for the reply.
Lol sorry I guess you can't really understand without seeing it for yourself XD..
But hmm Forge is a quest reward in Act4, you destroy a soulstone and in return you get gems and runes.. when you wanna get rushed you just give that reward for the rush, Y'know wa'mean?
When you do Tristram repeatedly you lvl pretty fast.. like from lvl 1 to 14
Tombs is a run in Act2 where people do all the tombs in Canyon of the Magi.. I never did this tho.

There are a lot of people that will rush for free as well, if you are patient.
Once you are in Hell Act 4, do Diabloruns to level up insanely quickly. You can probably go from lvl 1-60 in less than 30 min, easy. Then you move on to Act 5 and level quickly from 60 to about 75 with ease (Baalruns), and from 75 to 85 with quite decent speed. After that it is a grind fest ^^ That is why I stop around 85.
However, for the most enjoyable experience I strongly recommend running through the game without shortcuts.
For the second most enjoyable experience, run Tristram over and over again to around 15, the tombs in Act 2 to 20, Cowlevel to 25, then move on to Act 5 (should be easy with a spellcaster since you don't need a good weapon) and do Baalruns to around level 40. Do Diaruns/Baalruns in Nightmare until level 60, then move on to Hell, and repeat.
If you want to get rich (for a "maxed" char), get gear with Magic Find and farm bosses, there are guides for which to go for, I don't MF so I don't know much. A good starter is a Sorceress because of her Teleport skill, otherwise you need Enigma, which is quite expensive if you are new.
Oh, and even if most guides suggest to not get mana, it can really help for starting up a first character. At least if it is a spellcaster since you won't have mana steal.
Thanks for the replies. Right now, I am at Duriel and I am level 21, as a summon necro. I plan on just playing through and maybe farming Diablo/Mephisto/Baal when I am higher up, before moving on to Hell/Nightmare.
Cool man yeah when it's been awhile you haven't played it's fun to just play the game normally.
But hey man are you in ladder or non-ladder?
Ladder. Honestly, I am not really "with" the whole battlenet yet. When I played before, I was strictly single player. I chose Ladder because they said there were items available only there.
Yeah true some items you can only make on ladder, like some runewords. But they're still available on Non-Ladder, just hella expensive since they had to be created in ladder and then waited forr ladder to reset for it to switch to Non-ladder. But anyways it's cool I admit if you're new, starting in ladder is the best. Sucks tho cuz I would of helped you out if you would of wanted of course.. I'm just bored as hell.. So yeah Goodluck with yo'shit man

Stop and smell the roses, or dead zombie corpses at least. In my humble opinion, too many people try to rush through the game now adays. If you are a noob, take the time and experience the game. Go down each cave, explore every area, and listen to every dialogue. This is the only way to fully experience how awesome Diablo is. After you have played through the game a few times, then worry about finding rushes and end game stuff.

Even though summon necros are not very item dependent, you will have a hard time mfing in hell cause without Beast and Call to Arms runewords, your skellys may not kill the bosses before dying.
I would start with a sorc, a poison necro or a wind druid, since those classes are great mfers when you're poor (and they are also easy to play).
But i agree with scyberdragon. It's allways good to play the entire game (doing all quests, exploring all maps) before start to rush and mf.

I thought about going the Poison Necro route, any suggestions as to builds?
I am with ScyberDragon. Just play the game the way you want.
Skellymancer is a solid build and a safe build to play. In Hell it may have some problems. I recommend putting at least 1 point into all the curses. Attract and Confuse are very good curses. Many Necromancers never utilize the full power of the curses. All my Necromancers will use all the curses from time to time depending on the circumstance.
I would only place 1 point into the Clay Golem and Golem Mastery as well as only 1 point into the summon resists. You will be looking for items that plus all skills or +skills to necromancer or to the summoning tree.

Skills
20 Poison Dagger
20 Poison Explosion
20 Poison Nova
1 Clay Golem
1 Golem Mastery
1 Summon Resistance
1 Bone Armor, Bone Wall, Bone Prision
1 Each Curse
20 Corpse Explosion
Gear
Focus on +Skills, Resistances, Magic Find and Fast Cast Rate (enough quickly alternate Nova>Corpse Explosion>Corpse Explosion>Nova). Mana and HP as secondary option.
Like Hans said, it's very important to get used to use all curses. You can disable archers, hold enemies in place, tank bosses, etc... Depending on the situation and your party you will use a different one.
The best run spot for this character is Mephisto. If your merc is really strong you can also run Chaos Sanctuary.
putting a point into Bone Wall and Bone Prison will come in handy if mobs are overwelming your merc and golem. The wall/prison will not be to strong but if you use IM curse they can hurt themselves. The other curses you may not want to use.
Terror is wonderful curse but it is hard to control the direction the run and the curse is better used outside.
Attract is a great skill used against ranged and summoners that hide behind the enemies.
