I used to play diablo A LOT, but only via LAN, I never played on Battlenet... However I've been getting the itch to play again, and I want to play on closed battlenet, but I'm concerned about running around with non-legit players.
So with that said, is it possible to cheat on closed battle net? I want to make sure that if I play on it, that everything is completely legit. Thanks!
The only way it's possible to cheat on closed battle.net is to use third party programs. That and duping, which is a huge problem on most realms.
You'll find many players are using map hacks to automatically load the full map so they don't have to search for their destination, and bots to find items or grind for levels automatically for them. Or spam bots, which have become increasingly annoying recently.
Other than that, there aren't any hacked items as far as I know. So if you can live with people using map hacks and bots you're good to go.

duped runes and sojs are the biggest worry in terms of items. just dont mass hrs or sojs and youll be fine. no one dupes uniques unless they are completely perfect

Actually there are still bugged / hacked items on Closed Bnet. Look at 70/15 charms...or maybe armageddon fletch? Those items cannot be made or found legitly.
There are numerous hacks out there still as well:
- Barbarian Drop Glitch
- TMC (Auto gives max fhr , fcr)
- Auto Aim
- TPPK
- MapHack
There are more I just can't think of em at the moment.
TMC and Barb glitch pretty much ruin the game by themselves tho. TPPK destroyed Hardcore. Auto aim and Map hack arn't that big of issues since every Auto aimer blows ass in duels regardless.
For the vast majority of items on closed Battle.net no one bothers duping. It's really only something to worry about with HR's and SoJ's because they're the high-end currency. Basically everything else is legit.
So... You only will have problems with dupes if: 1) you trade for an HR to use as trade leverage and don't trade it right away (or store it on a mule) or 2) you trade for a SoJ (just don't bother trading for SoJ's, they're practically all duped- I get lucky every so often and one drops off the most random monsters).
So, other things, like Shako's, Vmagi's, Mara's, Shuta's, Torches, Anni's, etc., are hardly ever duped, at least in my experience, because they are not the currency.
Maphack is a little bit more difficult, but basically if you want to play with some legit friends, you'll usually be able to tell if you have a person going "WP HERE! DUNGEON HERE!" every time you enter a new area. If they're wandering around aimlessly, which is normally the case when I make games to run the whole thing the old-fashioned way, then they most likely don't have MH or aren't using it.
Dueling... Cheating is more dire and harder to handle. I don't really duel, so I don't know much in that area. Actually, nothing. I don't think I've joined a real duel game (excluding those silly ones you start with your friends in a passworded game) for years now. So... I'm not going to say anything there.
So, in a non-dueling environment: avoid trading for HR's unless you're going to use or trade them immediately (if you insert a rune in to an item it won't disappear), don't trade for SoJ's, and keep an eye out for the tourist guide when you make games. Profit.

Actually they are not that common as you would think.
The real cheaters and hackers are easy to tell but good legit players get blamed for hacking when they are just good. Take for example a good far away lock, most players would die and assume that person was AAing them but in fact they arn't.
I can't tell you how many times I get accused of AA or TMC or rejuving when I haven't used a hack since Diablo 2 came out. Just cause the fact that I can namelock that good and know how to duel and how to dodge attacks it is assumed that I hack and I see it everyday in most duel games. Even the most hacked out person is garbage in a duel and very beatable. It is when they team up with a leaping barb, a mbing sin, and a amp damage necro with a druid that it becomes an issue. 1v1 tho and hackers are still garbage, they rely on quantity over quality.
I don't do any sort of cheating, people who have played games with me can agree that I am an honest player. If you would like to play a game then, shoot me a PM sometime.
