Okay I just wanted to clear up the common misconception that the labels unique and rare are incorrect. It actually makes perfect sense.
For years people have pointed out that unique (gold) items aren't actaully unique, and rare (yellow) items are the ones that are actually unique because they are all different. But the way I see it, it is perfectly accurate to call the gold items unique. See there is only one gold-text dagger, which is the gull dagger. If you see a dagger in gold text you know that it is a gull, because there is only one dagger that can be in gold text, therefor gold daggers are unique. However if you find a yellow dagger, it can be a variety of different things, and therefore not unique. Understand? Good.
I still examine each pick up on its merits and whether a particular class of hero of mine might have a use for it now or later or whether the item might be useful for a younger hero.
The rough benchmark for me is that gold is better than yellow and green is worth a look.
Consulting the Arreat Summit database is a drag - interrupts game play. I can't remember everything so we just judge an item at the time. That means some golds are thrown away. I recall selling a Manald Heal because we just couldn't justify wearing it. We preferred a +1 skills instead.

So we've got over the problem of colour in D3. Great. Now let's argue about everything else not yet set in stone and help make this game simply great! Game on.
