I want to have a little vote because some say a Summonancer should use Golems mainly and some say Skeletons. I am a bit in the middle and confused because, yes skeletons are good at the start but in Hell mode you would think they would get destroyed. So please vote and post what you think!
Golems become useless for damage dealing past nightmare difficulty. The only useful one is the Clay Golem because he acts as a good meatshield and slows down enemies, which is very useful in boss battles. So Skeletons as a whole are more important to a Summonancer.

Well the summonancer is one class I do have some experience with, and you definately want to go with Skeletons. Don't bother with mages, and don't bother with any golems other than the clay golem. Just make sure you get lots of +skill items to boost the toughness of your skeletons, as well as some auras from items you equip and your merc, and the character really plays well.
darkjay would be the premiere expert on this build, but he's not around that often, especially not lately.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

The magi are still useful because the poison ones stop health regeneration, the cold ones slow, and the lightning ones, I *think* (it's beena while) give a small stun for a split second. (I think the last one isn't true, but it might be, I have no idea why. The first two are true, though.) Anyway, it's not really the damage as much as the functionality.
On the golem note, a good mud golem (with a point in golem mastery, blood, iron, and fire golem for the extra stats) is good because if you get a good amount of +skill items, he slows missiles down A LOT. That makes him good for your little army. The iron golem is also good for his thorns aura. (I can't remember if the thorns apply to every minion or not.)
never put more than 1 point into any golem abilty, golem mastery, and if you aren't decked out, put more than 1 into summon resist - golems dont do anything in hell mode at all, go for all skellies and focus on skelly mastery.
Really, it depends on you, Golems can be supertanks if you make them EXACTLY right, but they can't take on hordes very well, however, they require no corpse, and therefore are easily replaceable, except for Iron Golems.
Skeletons on the other hand, can be great tanks in NM and Hell difficulties, just by getting the skills, Summon Skeleton, Skeleton Mastery, and Summon Resistance high, and using some good skill+ items (Harlequin Shako, Arm of King Leoric etc.). However, they can be a pain to replace when fighting enemies that are immune to physical or do enough damage to kill them quickly.
a healthy balance never hurts but i always like golems, but skeles are easier to be with. theres a blood golem trick when your lower lvl and a good item iron golem really helps your skeles out.

Good little debate well I had to re start Diablo because my computer got destroyed by viruses last year and it gets extremely boring starting all over again in the first couple of cities so I have just beaten Mephisto. I watched my bro kill Diablo with his Druid and I must say I am very worried lol, it took him forever because all his people kept dying and he had to maul it to death in werebear form. With me it will be very hard because my build is iron golem, 1 skeleton, the hireable with a spear, and 10 skeleton mages and level 5 golem and skeleton mastries. As you can see I've spread it out a bit, and I'm only lvl 25 at the moment so I have a few skill points before I fight him. The thing you'll all be arguing about is that I only have 1 skeleton, I have focesed on mages because they die alot less, so with my last few skill points before I fight him can you's help me in what I should do? Should I get skeleton mastry up to make my mages stronger or get more skeletons? Also all my skeletons will die when he does fire nova anyways so either way i'm in alot of trouble
The reason I don't know thatt much about summonancers is because I have mostly been a Paladin, (got half way through nightmare with Paladin before my comp stuffed up last year) and I have been reading guides and different people say different things so I have just gone my own way and so far it has turned out perfect for me, I killed Mephisto without going back to town (with paladins you usually do to get potions) and my mages killed him in about 20-40 seconds max, so it is good at the moment. So please tell me what skills to go up in for Diablo

Well if you're 25, you should probably just try and beat him. If I understood you correct however, the problem is your skeletons die.
See, this is a great thing about the skeleon warriors. You summon up all of them, run to diablo, then cast life tap on him. You should have no problem killing him like that.
Now obviously you can't do that, since you don't have any skeletons. And levelling up in Act 4 is boring. Putting a few skill points into skeletons won't do much for you now, but then again skeletons dying don't help you either.

The only minions i use on a summonmancer are revives. They increase the damage, defense and health of the monster you have slained. Revives own in hell. Skeleton are weak in hell and golems are tankers. Get revives, an act 2 might merc, cta and you will be all set.

Just so that they don't become useless..like the skeletons later on, or golem in harder mode.

All in all it depends on you.

I don't know.
Golems are more powerful one on one, but when you have 500 skeletons, the sheer quantity is enough to kill anything.
