The reason why a dps meter wont work well with Diablo games is simply because its about survival, if a dps meter would be added into the game then everyone would just compete about who is doing the best dps and be making stupid misstakes or die because your constantly in the heat of battle because you wanna be in the top of the dps.
Diablo is about teamwork and survival, not about dps. It works in WoW because you have one tank taking all the damage and mostly your just standing still doing damage, Diablo doesnt play like that,
I'm all for damage meters in WoW, between it and WoL I can effectively make decisions on exactly how well someone preforms in a fights even if they don't die to standing in crap. Decisions can then be made to try and fix them or dump them from the raid.
Diablo 3, action/ hack n slash rpgs aren't only about the amount of damage one puts out. In fact REAL rpgs aren't even about those. Some players are pivotal to a group and do absolutely no damage or healing, they simply control when monsters enter and exit fights. They control the flow of the fight. How exactly do you measure that? No charts or pie graphs can really be created to display how effective someone is at that role.
Now for the real reason a dps meter is wanted, to identify leechers with greater ease. There is never going to be a good way to identify a good leecher. The bad ones are easy, the good ones are hard to identify, and being able to judge that effectively just comes with time, or you can avoid it all together by playing with friends or just solo. You don't have to play the game with other people, it's just potentially easier to gear up if you do.
This isn't WoW. Like others have said, you're responsible for your own survival, not several healers standing around in the back of a raid. And honestly, would you want Blizzard to further delay D3 just for a stupid meter? I for one do not.
Diablo 3 is not a competitive game on its PvE side. You may try to compare your dps with your teammate while in the arena but killing monsters is meant to be fun, not race. Thus I believe there should never be a dps meter in the game. My vote will be no for this.
Might be a cool addition, but most people probably feel as long as crap is dying and you aren't being killed left and right that your dps doesnt matter as much. I can see why it would pretty important in WOW, but people get too hung up on dmg meters. Diablo wont and shouldnt be like that.
Another reason this isn't needed is you can already tell if you doing an effective job. Are enemies dying fast enough for you? If yes then you don't need more dps. If no, switch your build and go back. I highly doubt anyone will notice or care if the damage between 2 builds are so close, you need a meter for it.
Please no DPS meter! It doesn't belong in Diablo and I wish it never made it into WoW. I think a more fitting one would just be a "highest damage done " statistic for each class type that you could view but not spam in a chat channel. It would go along with other stats like # of monsters killed/gold looted/deaths, etc.
I would think that it would be irrelevant for the most part. This was a great addition to WoW because you would spend a good amount of time attacking a single monster. In Diablo however, I do not think you will be spending that much time just attacking a monster or even a boss. A lot of movement will be happening even in boss fights that will render a DPS meter irrelevant.
Although, it would be cool to have a DPS meter and some test dummies just to test certain items out or whatnot.
Yes but only to track your own damage. And target dummies in town. It would be great to test out different skills, combos and weapons to see what's outputting more damage. Of course this would would only work for single target damage but it's still a great point of comparison to other skills. Target dummies in WoW added a great deal of theory crafting and min/maxing to the game. Which is what farming gear is all about =D
DPS meter would only have sens if each of your friends go in a different direction. Otherwise whomever gets to mobs first that one will kill them all. Others will just try to follow. Only with elite mobs that rushing guy may be suddenly killed and you will have to finish the job. Ok, blizzard says it will more difficult than that but I don't really believe it, not in longer term, otherwise hack and slash would change into WoW, which I tell you is not happening. There are only two options in this game (kind of like in real martial artist fights), or you kill mob fast or he will kill you (also fast)
DPS has been the standby for measuring player quality (aside from not standing in the fire) within world of warcraft. With the inherent player based accustomed to the standard of measure, why wouldn't you include it?
In D3 dps is pointless. Just get a guy to some boss in inferno and check if he can kill him alone without you helping him. Should be good enough :))) I don't like people thinking that there will be people taking a tank role in D3. Good dps groups should be good enough without any tanks.
The Diablo Universe has no need for a DPS meter. The game is about hack and slashing through the unknown and not about min/max about how to continually push the top. There is no need to make players feel pressured into select builds to succeed.
Hmm. Having a DPS meter might go against the spirit of the game, if someone is 'slacking' it should probably be obvious without any addons, that being said, I can also see the attractiveness of having a recount style addon.
I hope they don't add this, will probably cause a lot of issues when DPS isn't that important, or people trying to do more DPS and dying because of it.
Diablo is not a game where a DPS meter would help. Its play style is different from MMOs like WoW or Rift for example.
Agreed with this. There's so much more to Diablo than just how much damage you can pump out.. mitigation, group support and mobility, healing, etc are all vastly more important IMO. I do hope they have a counter for total demons destroyed though, I was always curious in D1/D2 how many monsters I'd slaughtered over the years on my highest level characters.
Please. There is a reason this game is different from World of Warcraft. A DPS meter would be useless in Diablo 3. They made weapons show a DPS number simply to easily figure out if a said weapon has more damage than another.
Doesn't really fit with Diablo's game style, you can see your dmg on the char sheet, that's enough for me to compare gear and numbers. Don't see a need for a meter, as long as enemies are dying at a rapid pace and you aren't dying, thats good enough for me. Too many min maxers in WOW who focus on dmg meters, really don't want that to be apart of D3.
i think the survivability argument is the most valid. DPS meters would be a neat feature but would direct people in that direction... don't forget "you will die" that is a branded marketing phrase.... they are playing to our death wish instinct. ALTHOUGH!!! I would be super excited to get an achieve that was something along the lines of "You broke the ceiling! - dps above 1000 / 10000 / 100000"
It's not something that really fits in the diablo universe.
DPS meters in MMOs are there to rate performances of different players. In Diablo though, damage doesn't even matter. It's all about not dying. The only real use for it is to tell which build of yours does the most damage, but that's something you could do RIGHT NOW with pen and paper, and a few hours of time.
