I'm looking to finish up kitting out my summoner Necromancer (he's an 88 currently) that I use for MF Baal running. I have enough uniques and sets on mules that I have a pretty good selection of gear, but I think in the end I need to make some runewords in order to speed things up, because actually killing Baal is taking too long.
I'm saving for an Enigma for my nec, but that's a long ways away.
Right now, my merc is the focus of my improvements. He's wearing:
- Helm: Guillames (for CB), socketed, 38% enhanced dmg jewel
- Armor: an upped Shaftstop
- Weapon: Reapers Toll, 5-socketed, Lum (don't ask) + 4 enhanced dmg jewels
I want more crushing blow, but I don't have any polearm weapons that have it. Ideally I'd use some weapon with CB to replace Reapers, because then I can use Andarials Visage instead of Guillames for the helm. Plus the Reapers lvl-1 Decrepify is annoying, it overrides my curses.
I've been looking at Duress, Infinity, Chains of Honor, and Delirium (the fetish would be hilarious).
what runeword should I put on him? armor/helm/weapon? any suggestions? All he needs is crushing blow (more = better) and life leech. The skeletons keep baal occupied. He doesn't need any MF because I'm wearing enough MF gear.

Make the Obedience runeword!!! 5 socket polearm (must be polearm no spears) There is no other runeword polearm that has better damage/price ratio!
Hel Ko Thul Eth Fal (Some countess runs and you should have these in no time) ... (well if you have a soso that can do it fast)
30% Chance To Cast Level 21 Enchant When You Kill An Enemy
40% Faster Hit Recovery
+370% Enhanced Damage
-25% Target Defense
Adds 3-14 Cold Damage 3 Second Duration (Normal)
-25% To Enemy Fire Resistance
40% Chance of Crushing Blow
+200-300 Defense (varies)
+10 To Strength
+10 To Dexterity
All Resistances +20-30 (varies)
Requirements -20%
It has the crushing blow that you wanted and insane damage. It also boosts your mercs def, FHR, stats and resists. What more could you want? Last ladder I had a godly 94 level summon necro and he had two polearms for his merc: Pride with 20 conc aura and Obedience (made in ethereal great poleaxe). Most of the time I just used Obe
I really can't think of any better choices than Obedience runeword It's sooooo cheap too compared to what you get. It might also be that the -25% to enemy fire res increases Corpse Explosion Damage too!
Gulliver, I think you just made my day. That's exactly what I was looking for, thanks! My eyes glaze over when I skim the full runeword list, and I never noticed it.
Just to be safe, what weapons are included in the "polearm" class?

It's good to hear that my advice was helpful. I also recommend that you don't give up Guillaumes face because I don't think you can notice any dramatic difference between that and Andy mask. The more you have crushing blow the happier you will be when killing baal. Believe me, I've done that. Should your merc need any more resists you can always slap a rune (tal, ral, ort, thul) on Guillaumes.
Upped shaftstop is a solid choice for the merc but if you sometimes find yoursef short on one you could make the smoke runeword on an eth bugged 2 soc armor (75% ed, +50 all res :). That can't be bad.
Alright, I tried it tonight...and no go! Fortunately I backed up my char first...I think Obedience is Ladder-only. :-( :-(
I have the shaftstop on the Merc already, so we're covered there. Any other suggestions for the weapon? I'm looking at Infinity, but I think getting the runes for it is an "infinity" away (har har har)
Side note: sad and true story:
a couple years back (right when 1.10 came out) I was playing online as a 70-something druid that wasn't really that great. One day a Zod rune dropped (yes, an actual Zod), and I picked it up. I didn't know anything about runewords at the time, and I remember thinking "indestructible?? that's a retarded rune...who cares? I don't mind repairing stuff" and so I sold it to an NPC and never gave it a second thought. Ha ha...fail. It still haunts me to this day.

This kind of effect is only applied to the character (in this case, your merc) wielding the item, so it has no effect on your CE. As for the Rune Words, Obedience is, in fact, ladder-only, so that would be why it didn't work for you. Infinity and Pride are also ladder-only, so they won't do either. In general though, Infinity won't really do a whole lot for a Summonmancer, it's primarily used by elemental caster classes for the Conviction Aura; Pride is going to be your best bet for the huge damage bonus it'll give to both your merc and your skellies via the Concentration Aura (more so assuming you're using a Might merc). That damage will outweigh the CB your merc alone will get, especially in the later difficulties when CB only works to 50% life (in Hell). As far as non-ladder Rune Words, Eternity has 20% CB, and that's about it for RWs you can put in polearms. Duress adds 15% CB on Body Armor, which is helpful. Chains of Honor is good, but isn't typically used as a merc armor (not that there's anything wrong with doing so). Delirium will be way more annoying than your Reaper's Toll in terms of overwriting curses, and doesn't really provide anything that useful for your merc.
Also, a polearm is anything that says "Polearm Class" in the weapon tooltip (don't try to make Rune Words that specify Polearms in "Spear Class" weapons, it won't work). Cheers.

Yeah, I put Delirium on my merc, and then me, and MAN was it annoying. Especially that stupid bone fetish thing, it nearly killed me when I got hit one time!! I threw it away immediately (I back up my char before testing out any new runewords).
So many of the good RW's are ladder only, why aren't they in single player?
I think I'll end up going with Pride. I did put Duress on him too, for the extra CB, and it seems to be going well. For some reason he is doing okay even without Shaftstop's 30% DR.

It's so easy to fix if you want to have ladder runewords. Runewords are contained in a .txt file in the .mpq. If you want I could give you a modified file that allows you to make all runewords
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

Yeah! That'd be great...could you?

how the...??? hack much? reapers toll is only 1 sock max :ermm:
also good, act 1 merc with faith or that bow with vigor (harmony?) or ice for hf. she has good survivability too unlike those stupid act2 mercs. anyways, good summoners make their iron golemn out of an eth infinity or pride or insight.
for a2 merc, best set up imo:
gaze with res socket
infinity
treachery
