I just thought of something, and I wanted to write it down before I forget. It's late at night so it might be completely stupid and I'm just babbling.. so beware.
Okay so a random minigame type mode (I know they would never add this into diablo II now) in which you pick your class then are placed in the center of an arena at level one with no gear and no skills, just base stats. Then a wave of monsters comes in and you try to kill them. If you do, you gain a level and can put your skill point into whatever you want and your stat points wherever you want, just like when you normally level. You may pick one item that is displayed at the end of the wave. For the first level it could just be something simple like "cloth armor" The second wave of a bit stronger monsters comes in and if you defeat them you level again and another skill point and stat points pop up, as does your choice of an item to wear for the arena.
Once you die, the level you reached is counted as your high score. No potions, no portals, no advantage for having crazy gear. Just based on pure strategy.
I'm guessing that once you get to level fourty the gear would be a bit better like full sigons. And then as you approach eighties you can pick out rune words.
Anything from meteors to diablo himself can be thrown into the arena.. towards the last level I'm thinking all the bosses at once.
Rewards are just bragging rights, no real gain from it. High scores are listed like Ladder is.
thanks for listening, I bet I read this in the morning and wonder what I was thinking
Fun Idea, the should do like a wave of every type of monster, normal, nightmare and hell

Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could
But no immunities. That would be unfair. Interesting idea, though. Perhaps if you can avoid taking a certain amount of damage, you're allowed an extra item, an additional level, or some other reward.
I know D2 is not exactly mod friendly and I have never seen any modification that changes the actual "rules" of how the game works. So I guess its not possible.
This is never going to happen officially, so its annoying to talk about very fun ideas (because it does looks like a lot of fun) if they are nothing but "dreams".

The game is not out yet SFJake. No one can say that "this will never happen" or "that will definitely be in it". But it doesnt hurt to discuss about the possibilities of such.

Those before me shall quiver in my wake as I unleash the fury within!
Nice idea, I think it should be called "Naked Death Challenge". Since you start naked. Maybe there could be some drops that you could use too, potions, orbs or whatnot. Might be a good way to try different builds without grinding ot the top.

OP is talking about a minigame for D2.

ha ha, i like the name "Naked Death Challenge". I think this is a good idea for a mini-game. It seams like it would take a long time to get to level 80 if you had to pick a skill and item after each match, but I guess the matches wouldn't have to be too long.
Yeah, I was thinking maybe a potion every ten levels, they have to mean something so people will use then wisely.. Very different from normal D2 where you have as much as you need.
And sorry I can't quote whoever said this, I'm on my iPhone in a car.. But special item bonuses for doing well was what I was thinking. Between your health lost and the time it takes you to complete each wave - decides how strong the items you gain each level are.
I think mana generation could be sped up a little bit and maybe he'll as well. Just like potions mercenaries could be added for one turn.. Hopefully when a boss comes
I too love this idea! However instead of only one item dropping per round, I think 2 or 3 items should drop at the end of each round, but you can only choose 1 item.
If doing it in a party-mode type of thing, then maybe have each player choose from a seperate "table" of 3 items? And defitnely have better items be rewarded at the end of each wave for:
-tougher waves
-when you lose no health against a wave
-beat a personal time record for a specefic wave
-use fists only (no magic, no skills, no weapons) against a whole wave
-have no FF accidents at all in a wave?
More ideas to come ;D

Would give something fun to do as like a side game...

Additional ideas
-You could pick a merc as a reward
-each wave your health and mana is reset at the beginning
-do it with a friend team style.
It kinda reminds me a bit of Fable's arena games.
