I'm assuming that you have a widescreen LCD which stretches the image? Which monitor?
If you have a NVIDIA card and drivers installed you can go into the NVIDIA Control Panel and change flat panel scaling to "Use NVIDIA Scaling with fixed-aspect ratio"
Theres an equivalent for other graphics cards, just look in the settings
Basically, it adds two black edges to your screen so it stays correctly proportioned
And, to play it in Windowed mode. Add -window or -w to the end of the shortcut
This for example = "C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" -window
the game is looking awful on my LCD screen.

figured out the windowed part myself but the game is really small.
