I'm a little confused about who Marius from Diablo 2 is. Can someone please tell me the story behind this guy? Thanks.

watch the cinematics... in short, he follows the wonderer, free's tal, who is possesed by baal, takes his soulstone and goes to smash it... but he cant so he goes crazy and is sent to an assylm... thinking he is talking to tyreal he gives him the soulstone but he finds out its baal and he is killed

If you ever meet a hafling and a hungry dragon you dont have to outrun the dragon, you only have to outrun the hafling.
You can tell the same lie a thousand times but it never gets any more true so close your eyes once more and once more believe that they all still believe in you......
not really lucky. think about it. he followed diablo through the land, he went through the horrors of the brothers, he saw the three prime evils (no small feat for a mere mortal) and on top of that he tortured himself for many years. it was his fault baal escaped, it was his fault for many things and he tortured himself for it. then baal disguises himself as tyrael and takes the stone. imagine that. its absolutely crushing.
lol i dont need to duel you. you already lost. i need to sleep so i can wake up at 6. its 9pm here and i want to make sure i get up early enough to give my respects to those lost in an attack on my country. if cant at least honor that then i guess you are a traitor to your country as well as a dishonor to humanity.
Well, it's not Tristam, since Diablo that walks in is the hero from D1 that killed Diablo.
But I am also wondering WHO marius is. In the second cinematic, he has memories from the monastery. can someone who played D1, or know swhy he has tose memories, enlighten me?

i learned that the monastery he was in in the 1st movie was the rougue monastery when diablo (as the warrior) first attacked. then marius fled to the mountains to the tavern we see him in.

Hmm, that doesn't seem to make any chronological sense to me. In the second cinematic, Diablo is in the desert. To get there, he would have to have passed through the Rogue Monastery. However if that was where he first found Marius, it would mean that after passing the Monastery, he went all the way to a place where there is snow, just to get marius, and then went all the way back and into the desert.

I think it could snow almost anywhere in the World of Sanctuary supposing of course that area had the right weather/temperature conditions. (plus snow always looks cool in cinematics)
Marius meet the wanderer at the Rogue Citadel, then headed east
you take a carvan over the rogue pass from act one to act two. you as the PC had to enter the rogue monastery to kill andariel who after maruis and the wanderer left the home of the rogues is somehow stopping the caravans from travelling.
It could just be me, but i dont think the caravan route is actually in the monastery, rather next to or near it, the rogue pass is on the map of Sanctuary.
but then again Deckard does say Andariel is blocking it, if it was above ground how, from the bottom of the catacombs could she be blocking it.
but if it is under ground why were Elzix's and his men called Desert Bandits? he used to terrorise the Caravan Routes in the rogue pass. im not to sure on the specifics but doesnt desert Bandits imply that they work on or around deserts, and a desert would be on the surface as opposed to a tunnel? that would have to be a massive tunnel, I dont think the people of sanctuary would be able to make tunnels that long.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Well, Marius and the Wanderer went through the mountain pass, and we see them in the desert. So by only looking at that, a tunnel may well have existed in the monastery, only it didn't go att the way to Lut Gholein.
I would interpret what Cain said as the demons are blocking the path, and only by killing Andariel can the demons also be removed completely. SO in a way, as long as she lived, the pass was blocked. Even if the adventurer could have fough his/her way through the pass, no one else would have, and the rogue camp would have been doomed.
But still. A desert, and then suddenly snow. You would have to travel very far, or very high for that to be possible. And at the end of the first cinematic, we see trees. Trees disappear from mountains at an altitude of (I'm not sure, it may be lower, but I doubt it is higher) 2.000 meters, or 6.000 feet. Not to mention the ground was flat. And that low altitude next to a desert would not have snow I think.

you mean snow then desert, we are not told the time delay between the end of the first cinematic and the start of they second are we? you cant expect someone to go from snow to sand in a matter of minutes.

Now that I think about it, you may be right. Warriv does say "I don't know if I believe that, but, a Dark WAnderer did pass this way a few weeks ago."
So when you arrive to the rogue encampment, he has already been moving for weeks. And I doubt it really would have taken a new would-be adventurer to clear out Act 1 in a few hours. A few weeks seems more reasonable. So yeah, I guess he had some time to cahse after Marius, enough that the players would be unable to catch up.

yes, the chronology of the movies and the games are alitte weird, the weave in and out of each other, but basically you are following marius, but the time delay between you seems to vary or at least it appears that way.
marius in the asylum is after you killed diablo and mephisto, as he says "i had heard later he had been defeated and the soulstones destroyed at the Hell forge, all except one...", and he is at the rogue citadel before you were in act 1, same goes for his being at lut gohlein and Kurast, he was there before you, when you are in kurast and Hell marius is either in the asylum or hiding before he ends up there, still possessing Baal's stone.
this is extremely rough/hazy but it is something like this
-marius at the rogue citadel/Monestary
-marius at the outcasts Inn
-Marius at lut gohlein
-Marius at Kurast
-You at act 1
-you at act 2
-marius goes into hiding then enters the asylum or goes there without hiding
-you at act 3
-you at act 4
-you kill diablo
-alternatively marius who is still in hiding enters the asylum now
-Marius still holding the soulstone learns of diablos death
-marius recounts the events of his travels and your adventures
-Marius dies
-You enter act 5
marius came from one act to the other a lot quicker than you can as it appears that monsters appear behind the path of the wanderer, to stop you from following.

i think that the monster obstacles are diablo's way of making sure no one follows him too intently.
i also have a theory of marius. what if he is the old drunkard in diablo 1?? remember that the drunkard had been in the church and seen the horrors. in the video where the wanderer enters the pub, marius is being woken quite pitifully.
just a theory, but i do think that this is the truth. at one point or another i think we will encounter another villager, a survivor of tristram.

Well, I wouldn't say that the monsters appear to block only the player, but rather everyone. Otherwise that seems like a good descritpion of events.
