Hi all Im new to the forum so forgive me if this question has been beaten to death. Im stoked to pick up my CE of Diablo 3. My only concern is the stock graphics card. Im not a big pc nut so any advice would be helpful. I just want to be ready on launch day. I'll post my specs below. "Can you run it" seems to think I will have no problem but Im not so sure.
-AMD FX(tm)-4100 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor
-8GB ddr3 Ram
-Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1 -GeForce GT 520 1GB DDR3
I would like to be able to run above medium settings but as long as its not LOW I will feel better! lol
Oh, woops. Yeah, 520 is an entry level card for the 500 series. I really have no idea how well it would perform.
Did you not test it out during open beta?
Here is a good chart to show GPU performance across all GeForce cards. It will give you a good idea of how the GTX 260 I use and the 520 you use stacks up.
Ultimately, you want to use FPS benchmark comparisons when choosing the card you want, but the above is a good chart nonetheless.
The best cost-to-performance card right now is the GTX 480. It runs hotter and uses more power than just about every card though. I would suggest an ATI card as well but they are usually behind on getting drivers out for new games so I stick with EVGA GForce cards.
If you're upgrading GPU in an OEM you need to take a close look at replacing the PSU too, it probably can't handle high end video cards.
If you don't want to replace the PSU, try a radeon 7750, which should perform acceptably at 1080p in d3 with minimal increase in power consumption, though it probably won't perform as well in other games.
I don't know much about your Xtreme Gear PSU but as long as it is a quality 500w power supply then you should be fine with 90% of the video cards out there.
I know you guys are holding my hand on this I just dont have the experience with current tech to make a sound decision and I really dont want to change the power supply if i dont have to. It will be hard enough to convince my wife I need to purchase a new GPU tomorrow lol.
The PSU label says it can, but I wouldn't try it without tracking down a professional review(full capacity load testing w/ oscilloscope).
If you can find the UL number you can figure out who made it(pretty sure xtreme gear is just a relabel of a different brand PSU), and maybe find a review on whatever PSU it was a relabel of. The UL number should start w/ an E.
I'd be surprised if it could deliver 300w within ATX spec.

Thanks for the help.
It would be somewhat slower than the 6450 listed here:

Any reconmendations on a video card withouth having to change the power supply?
Thanks!

If you want a high end video card you'll probably need a better PSU, this one is as cheap as legit PSUs get, and can support almost any single GPU setup: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371045
As for picking a higher end GPU, a 560 Ti or 6870 will handle just about any modern game at 1080p
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 @3.4ghz.
RAM: 8GB
GPU: Radeon HD 4890
I tried with shadows turned to high and it dropped fps to 25-30. The visual difference in the shadows on high was negligible.

Withouth changing my PSU could my system "theoretically" handle:
