Some sections of the forums remain untouched by the hordes of merciless noob posters. This makes me a happy man.
I kinda think the whole forum system needs a revamp but whatever.
Edit: i actually did not know only untill recently that people had a chance to win a beta key only by posting on these forums... And then i see random people with 10-20 posts all going like "thank you dfans yay and hooray for my beta keyz"... I mean, seriously? wtf is going on.
You are asking Siaynoq about 14k posts? What about your 6k+ count?
On topic: Perhaps not exactly a cheerful thought for some but... Isn't this rather a preview for when Diablo III gets released - heh - and we'll have a flood of newcomers then, anyway? If a person can't adapt with having the DF community becoming much larger (and less experienced accordingly), then... I don't know if anything could satisfy said person.
It kinda worries me that this place will become like mmo-champion. Granted, I haven't been posting much, nor have I been a member of the community for long (At least a regeistered member), so I guess some would question my right to raise this concern but...
The reason I'm worried is that mmo-champion is so full of, for the lack of a better term, mental midgets that I simply stopped reading those forums (back when I played WoW). I stopped because I was beginning to fear for my life, thinking that one day someone would drive me to facepalm so hard I would cave in my own skull. Whether it be spam, "stupid" topics or stupid/flame(bait)/trolling posts, is kinda the reason why we cant have nice things.
This is why I was pleasantly surprised by the relatively small community Diablofans had, where most posts and topics were actually worth reading. I will miss that, even if I am glad that Diablo3 is getting more and more attention.
Just two gold pieces from a rather new forum lurker
The reason I didn't post in the thread until recently was because I was considering it. It just doesn't seem like that big of a deal though since things will be calming down very soon. If I had felt like this contest was REALLY interrupting regular traffic and older members discussions we would have done something, you all are still around though, we've still been having some good talks, even though yes it's a little cramped, some sections of the forum more than others, we seem to be holding together well. I don't like to have to step in and discourage anyone from posting by putting restrictions of any sort.
If things DO start getting out of hand I'm always here to listen to you guys concerns. The last thing I want to see is the forums go down the drain, I just don't see any evidence of that happening in any long term capacity.
I like to operate by this quote from Futurama.
When you do things right, people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all.

Lol, no but yea, I see where you are coming from. Maybe the WoW forum is starting to get in my head with the "SKY IS FALLING" mentality. There were a couple that left but the majority are still here. *Shrugs* Guess we will see.
I just don't get why you wouldn't come right out and explain one's reasoning for not instituting such a change. So then what's the purpose of this section? That people might make suggestions and just hope that the staff are reading them? I mean, I'm fine with the logic, but why keep people guessing? Why not address the issue as it's been presented to you in the thread? Go ahead and delete this post too if you like.
Merely deny new users the ability to post new threads unless they've achieved a certain number of posts. Even as low as 10 or 20 would make a huge difference.
Why does anyone even care? It's not like it costs you time/money to simply ignore the threads that you are uninterested in.
Take me for instance. New poster, but not new to the site. So why wouldn't I be able to create a thread of something that interested me even though i had one or two posts? Are we worried about server space or something? Why such draconian measures?
And Siaynoq, even you (14,000 odd posts ago) were new at some point. Wouldn't you be pissed if someone had told you that you couldn't post until a certain quota had been reached? As if your possible threads were less valuable because of an arbitrary number?
Come now...let's be reasonable. Diablo is a gentleman's game after all.
I didn't say yes or no because I was evaluating the state of things and deciding what would be best. I didn't want to lead anyone to believe I was leaning one way or another until I was sure it was or wasn't a problem.
Wouldn't you be pissed if someone had told you that you couldn't post until a certain quota had been reached? As if your possible threads were less valuable because of an arbitrary number?
The number wasn't completely arbitrary at all. There were plenty of reason given for even just 10 posts. And no, I wouldn't be pissed at all. I've been on other forums with the same restrictions and it was perfectly sensible a measure.

Can't speak for him, but I wouldn't be upset or offended. If 5,000+ others just joined and were dry humping the site to get beta keys, I'd completely understand.

Look I'm not trying to flame or start a riot or anything. I just question the efficacy of the move. I could post "I agree" or "nice" ten times, and it won't make the idiotic thread I (probably) create any less so.
All I was saying is I don't think it will stop the trolls from trolling for beta.
I'm relatively new here so maybe I have no real right to comment, but that's just the way I see it.
All I was saying is I don't think it will stop the trolls from trolling for beta.

The purpose was less to stop trolls and just keep the D3 section from being so inundated. Even if people aren't posting something about the beta, they still impulsively create new threads all the time to which there are at least a few devoted to the exact same topic.
The fact that people have been creating new threads recently all about the beta has only highlighted an already existing problem of new users coming along, making a thread, and often times that thread having a doppelganger.
First point: I had an account in my region's diablo3 fan site, what they did? they just gave all betas to admin and stuff of the website (family and friends, ofc) and i think 38 to old members, well i just quitted and came here. They clearly don't want a good community or a good website they just want betas and be the 50 guys they are posting right now, why i came here? because i though it could be a great community i read the news and some comments, i won't lie i created the account when the contest started I don't use to post but that cheered me to start. (I think it is all about, make the community bigger and better than now)
Don't forget that this curse for good or bad so you can be older here but compared to some people like me u could be a new member if you compare to my mmo account for example, so try to be nice with new people i feel like old members don't want at all new members here.
It's not so much that I don't want new members. I like new people. I just don't want people raping the site for a chance to get a beta key.
If I had my way and I was running the site, I'd of told Blizzard that we as a site didn't want the keys, mostly to keep fans in and key whores out. (See, that's the difference. New members=Cool. Key whores=Not cool.)
I'm not saying that Beta keys are a bad thing. Obviously they are not. But when you have a contest like this that is this public with this many keys, this issue is going to show itself and people will whore themselves out for a key as much as they can.
If the people of the forum just don't want the new members to have the same rights than the older ones, and want to be like this website i mentioned just say it and i'm out of here and i will find another community, post it and be clear, no one is going to die for that.
If you want to stay, then stay. If you want to go, then go. Don't act like big shit. Kthx.
Second point: I have been in one of the bigger and most active forums in the world for five years now and we have some rules for new members, and our report system solves the majority of problems, if a new member don't use the searcher and makes something dumb, +18 or duplicated report him, ofc there the reports of an account of 2005 are not the same of an account of 2012, if you all are so worried about this community going down, create a clear post of what behaviour is expected for a new member with a few rules (make a list of what could be reported) and apply them with reports, I don't know why if something upsets you just ask the admin to do something, do it yourself send a report with a good reason and ban him.
The way the rules are right now, this wouldn't work. From what I understand, Curse thinks that less rules makes a friendlier environment. And considering they removed a lot of rules when they took over, and didn't put nearly as many in to recoup, that would strengthen that view.
See what I did there? Even the snobby elitists who make repeat topics about how there are too many repeat topics need to whine I guess.
What is really going on? Looks as though someone with an over-blown sense of entitlement believes he should get more rewards than the next guy. Typical internet elitist.
I really think that is the core of most people's anger towards new members/posters on this site. Not the redundant threads (which I will admit there are) - not the less than constructive replies either.(which again, I admit there are) Those 2 things are a part of -every- large internet forum community.
No, the problem everyone has is that they are angry that these :"new": guys are winning beta keys they want. They should have a better chance - and if not a better chance, then they should have won already. I bet every person who is grumpy about new posters and repeat threads would magically calm down if suddenly granted a key. This is why I roll my eyes every time someone gets all up in arms because the belief that their post count = how much more valuable they are. Reminds me of those GearScore snobs in WoW.
If it looks as though it's "A topic that has been discussed before" then -gasp- don't open it?
Seriously - it's not hard to grasp. The guy who has been here for 2 hours is just as entitled to post and be apart of the community as the guy who has been here 2 years. If that's not cool with you, build your own tree-fort and you can institute whatever rules you like.
Just sayin'
:::Edit:::: ... PS, I'm one of those <20 post guys who got a beta key from dfans. . Why? Because instead of fighting and complaining about who was/wasn't getting keys, I just posted because I liked to be here.
For the record, I don't care about the beta. This has nothing to do with getting a beta. And I've clearly stated my reasons for wanting the measure. So if you actually go back and read what I wrote you'll see I could seriously give a shit if new members won keys or not.
If any other long time member does have a problem with that alone, then yeah, I would think that's silly also.

You know, I laughed at this.
I got the beta, and I still don't want 5,000 threads of the same thing. You can get your beta key by posting in a thread somebody else makes. (Or, here's an idea, post because you like the community instead of "Omg, liek I luv diablo! Betakeypls!"
Additionally (And you can ask my guild), I have never, ever used Gearscore. It limits your ability to play and your guild's ability to play. Back in Wotlk when I was running a guild, I even banned it. Too much e-peen. Kinda like you.

And, just so we are clear:
The Proposed plan of action would not keep key whores from getting keys. That is NOT the purpose of the idea. The purpose of the idea is to keep the site from having 5,000 threads of the same damn topic. You and every other key whore can still whore yourselves out to get your keys.

That would eliminate your concerns (redundancy) while also addressing my concerns (inability of a new member to post).
This way a new member can still post a potentially interesting and engaging topic, while avoiding the thread clones you all seem to hate.
/end sarcasm

Curse doesn't make the rules for the forum. We make our own rules, these have just been working out okay.
Like SeaSky said, report something and it won't be ignored. If it's a reasonable request we will of course comply.
