Yeah, I hate to say it, but this just seems a way for you to get a better title.
I've seen newer members around who are much more dedicated than tons of the older members, just because you've been around here for a long time doesn't necessarily mean you're dedicated, or you post a lot.
Sure, people can spam to increase their post count, but they're still giving ideas here on the forums, which is much more important than simply being here.

It's a valid point though. It does encourage spam.

I can't find the link but I thought somewhere that site management decided to add "off-topic" posts to count towards user post counts because it was still a contribution to the community. It is up to the mods and management to decide if any particular threads are spam and therefore should be deleted.

He means spam in the sense of posting just for the sake of posting, not necessarily specific to the spam section.

Blades, there are a lot of post count whores on the site. And ever since they were allowed to spam and get posts for it they've really been at it. I fought hard against it, but management felt it was the best decision and I won't go further into than that.
But then again, I've not seen you around much at all lately either and yeah, awarding people rank based on seniority isn't really the best idea. Even if the spammers are spammers, they're still more active and involved now than you, right? The good news is, titles don't mean anything anyway. The ones who build up their post counts primarily by spamming the site know who they are and know deep down that their titles are especially meaningless.

People don't actually take the whole title thing seriously do they? I mean, this isn't a game or anything so what is the point? It's not like we actually garner anything from titles.
I understand why you fought against making spam posts count. But at the same time, I certainly understand why they made them count. A lot of the discussions in the spam forum are actually pretty thought out and not so much spam as they are miscellaneous.

While the off topic forum promotes discussion outside of Diablo, and can create some incredibly well thought out and interesting posts, it also leaves the door open for users to simply spam random shit to get a higher post count.

Well, and we shouldn't get into discussing the spam merging with the off topic section anyway. I've already gone over it plenty of times with the other staff members and have now come to terms with it. But the point is, just about every forum I've seen rewards titles in via post count. I don't know if it's the best way to do it or not, but I certainly can't think of anything else that would make more sense.
Hell, maybe somehow we could get titles to be reflective of a combination of post count, seniority, and rep.
Then again, people spam rep like there's no tomorrow as well, any system that we use for titles will have some way to be exploited. In the current case, it's easy to spam posts to get a better one. With the seniority case, you can simply join early, and have a badass title for doing nothing.

Maybe reputation if it was done right. What if reputation could only be given with a reason of a minimum of 10 or 20 words?

Yes, but it would discourage rep spam.

Incorrect. It was mostly up to DoranM. We weren't really given much wiggle-room- we all logged on one day and he (as far as I know) had taken off the no-count restriction and merged it with General Discussion.
I would say Siaynoq has the best approach to this:
The good news is, titles don't mean anything anyway. The ones who build up their post counts primarily by spamming the site know who they are and know deep down that their titles are especially meaningless.
We also know who the spammers are for similar reasons (oh, look, if you click on the post count next to the Ultimate Random Thread it tells you how many posts each person had in it! genius!).
Take them for what they're worth to you. Value them with the people that don't spam. Unless you like spam.
As far as rep goes, we can't really enact anything better at the moment. There are mods out there that can add nice features to counteract issues we have, but as far as Sixen has told me, Curse won't allow us to just add those (security issues and such).
My advice for the rep system is just to use it like you see fit. If you don't want people to spam rep, don't do it yourself and encourage everyone to use it in a more appropriate way.
With the seniority case, you can simply join early, and have a badass title for doing nothing.
You think having a much greater interest much earlier means nothing?
I find that a little naive.
Joining this site before the game was even announced should be rewarded in some way. It just shows a much greater interest in the game.

I understand your point, but I have been here, you just don't know it. I just have nothing to post about because there is no point. We now know they are making the game all I have to do is wait. I have posted occasionally to answer questions or to ask questions, not to speculate about an unknown character that will be released soon enough anyway.
People bashing on me saying that I just want my own rank up is quite offensive.
I don't want my rank to even go up, I just have seen an incredible amount of spam throughout the site and it is really pathetic.
This thread has already gone off topic.
Something needs to be done about the amount of spam even if this isn't the perfect solution.
Their may be other ways to reduce spam but I think this would be the most effective.
I honestly believe that these titles do mean something to the immature people who are continuously spamming.
Maybe just the combination of post count and join date could determine someones title.
I enjoy the feedback, but please keep it on topic.

Interesting. I'm closing this now before it gets out of control. If another moderator, manager, or administrator decides to post, they'll be able to, but I'm not going to allow this to happen.
I think if the title was determined on join date it would make much more sense. Why not reward the senior members for their dedication?
Maybe if there is enough support a poll is in order?

People could still write out something like "Lol dude, I love you, you just gave me rep, here's some for you."
But making rank a combination of things would probably be strain on vBulletin's limited capabilities anyway.
