Ladders are just around the corner and I still don't get the appeal... There's no way to compete with the people who are fed gear or play 14hrs/day, there's no trade-market to reset so what is it? The only appeal I see is the ladder-only legendaries which I personally feel is just a way to force people to play ladders otherwise there will be content they don't have access to. Greater rifts, new map, class fixes, new items I like it all but ladders, those I just don't get... Who really wants to repeat everything they've just done simply to have the same thing they already have?
How about you guys, maybe someone can show me the positive to ladders or give there reasons as to why they also don't see the point.
If the 2 modes had the exact same content i would play the non-ladder mode.
However the system they are going with is rather generous compared to say Diablo 2. where ladder uniques and runewords could only be gotten in ladder. (sure they moved down to non-ladder at the end but you could not obtain em any other way) now in D3 any items that is Season 1 Only will be moved down to non-Season loot pool. and Season 2 will get new exclusive legendaries. I do like this system alot. as people that dont wanna play ladder will get the items eventually without being forced to play a game mode they don't like.
It goes pretty fast to get a character up to lvl 70 so that's not a big problem. I do enjoy the occasional reset back to 0 it makes the game feel "fresh" you get to try out new things.
However, loosing all your paragon levels for every new season is more of a nuisance. <--- this point here is probably the only thing that might put me of playing in the seasons. But we will see maybe they will have accelerated Paragon Exp gain in Seasons but that will also force players that don't like the mode to play it.

EU Season Achievement Ladder: Season 1 : #773, 7150/7880 | S2 : #742, 5970/8280 | S3 : #1000+, 810/980 | S4 #? 0/? |
I plan on playing for a couple of seasons, just to get the achievements (DON'T JUDGE ME!), unless they roll out new ladder acheivements every season, or reset them each season, in which case screw that noise.
This is the thing though, other than the loot and stuff there restricting to ladder... What is the incentive to play it? That restricted loot shouldn't be the reason to play ladder if it has to exist it should just be a bonus to it but everyone i've spoken to has said the only reason they will play ladder is for that which makes ladders kinda pointless, no? Be better just to release new loot every few months... In Diablo 2 I played ladder because I enjoyed the first couple months of PvP and trading both of which don't really exist in D3 so like I said I just don't see what ladders are really bringing to the game?
If they did it like PoE with 1/2/3hr races and stuff with special elements like turbo, higher density, more drops etc... Id get it because it's a competitive thing with a twist to make it interesting to play but just the same thing with some more items? I don't get it.
There is 0 incentive to play seasons unless you want the season-only legendaries, and you don't mind fresh starts. Other than that seasons are pretty much pointless. I'm 100% against gimping player for however long a season is and knowing blizzard, these seasons may last 3+ months, possibly much longer (SCII I'm looking at you!). Other than the season only legendaries there really is only the incentive of competitive leader-boarding. Who's faster, who's quicker, who had the highest plvl at the end. Who killed who first, who got more achievements. Stuff like that. to me I don't really care for any of it, so i just play my non-season mode, I'm just pissed that I can't access the legendaries that i know are going to be ridiculously op for a few months, hopefully seasons only last a month at most, possibly only 2 weeks.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
Right now, I would play non-ladder. A good reset is fun from time to time, but I pretty much abandoned softcore and switched to hardcore when RoS dropped, so I've had a recent reset. Maybe in a couple of seasons time I'd go for ladder.
I'm not going even to test "ladder" system - waste of time, no point starting all over again for few items.
Exactly!
I still dont understand why ppl would play ladder anyway. 24/7 gamers will achieve everything first and even nerds like me wont be able to compete with students or part time workers or whatever.
And why would I start to gear up a new char which will be deleted after a few months?
Anyone not familiar with the awesome (free) ARPGPath of Exile should check out the community there to see how well seasons and ladders can be implemented and executed. The player base there loves them, and aside from the two main ladder seasons every 3 months (SC and HC) they also run shorter "races" where all players start from scratch...some are 1 hr long, some 24 hrs, some are a week or a month! Lots of variety too, some with player killing allowed/encouraged, some with restrictions of magic use or grouping/trading. TONS of variety = tons of options for players. They also give out rewards for reaching certain points (example: reach level 12 in a 1hr race = points that unlock in-game unique items).
Be warned: They are not for everyone, though. If you hate the idea of not playing your main character all the time or will become discouraged from falling behind the streamers/full-time gamers they are not for you. Seasons are for people who want to play genuinely competitively (not just for gear e-peen bragging rights) and that is why there are ladder only reward legendary items: it is a competitive environment.
If a player doesn't want to compete in a ladder league, they have no right to complain they aren't receiving the loot available in the competitive league. You will get the items eventually, but not while those items are being used to propel players/builds to the top of a competitive environment.
Me personally? Sticking my main SC character haha. I play for fun and to farm loot. That's why I've played since D1.
Let's remember that season exclussive loot is irrelevant.
You do not get the exclussive loot for the character you wanted it for anyway, so what's the point??
I, like the OP, really don't see the appeal of seasons. I really don't. I don't intend to play them, ever. Even if I thought there was a reasonable chance of placing highly on the leaderboards, why would I play it? Placing highly on the leaderboards isn't a display of skill or anything of the kind, it's just dumb luck in terms of drops and silly hours/days/weeks/months/years/decades of play. And all that effort for what? You didn't beat any players and have no bragging rights (or atleast no way to advocate it).
You could say the loot is appealing. But is it? The <insert character> I really want that specific ladder only legendary for, is non-ladder.. so... now what? I mean, I could create the character again on ladder and spend 1000+ hours to get the paragon levels and some of the gear back, just so that I can have the same gear set but now with that one ladder exclussive legendary incorporated into the gearset. How very unappealing.
No, if they want me to play ladders they're going to have to come up with something better.
agreed

There is only one god and his name is Death.
And there is only one thing we say to Death. Not today.
I simply don't understand this system. What is point of non-ladder chars will be? Will paragon points ladder-non-ladder wide? Is your ladder gear will transfer to non-ladder at the season's end? If so - non-ladder chars will become just a mules? If ladder's point is just a seasonal leaderboards - why exclusive legs? I don't get the logic, can someone enlighten me?
If they had the same loot, why would I willingly rid myself of all my hard earned paragon points?
It's good that they don't share the same loot. It's still not enough to convince me to play in the season, but once that season ends, us non season players will get access to all that loot as the season players go on to their second season (and so on). There's no point in time except for perhaps the last season ever where the Season/Ladder gameplay has anything that won't eventually be available to non ladder toons.
If Diablo 3 had same content in each game mode I would not play ladder. it's really unfortunate, but I have already leveled each class to level 60 before ladder was even being talked about in this game. Perhaps millions of other players have done the same. Players who could not wait for this title to be released, and jumped feet first right into it after years of waiting. little did they know, upon the games release, their wait had only just begun.....
Every class or character I make, I already know exactly how they will feel and what they will be at max level. they will get skills and runes and the exact same times and they will be showered with smart loot with the same blend of stats.....its absolutely awash in repetition and predictability no matter which way you slice it.
Non-ladder without trading. Ladder with trading. If there is no trading, then it's better to play with existing characters instead of starting fresh ones. With trading, I would prefer the economy reset that comes with it.
I'm bummed by seasons. I don't have enough time to play this crap and yes I would like to have a chance at those new features. I have a job and a social life, I play 4-5 hours a week max, how the fuck am I supposed to make ladder work for me.
There's just one thing I don't understand. Diablo 3 didn't release with ladders because the Developers didn't think they fit the game or that they were needed. After all, Diablo 3 is a totally different game to Diablo 2 and Path of Exile, would ladders even work?
Now, the game has been out for 2 years, and getting better all the time, after RoS it's finally getting to the place that it should be - then the Dev's do a total 180 turn and say, not only do they now want to add ladders - they want ladders to be the main mode everyone plays.
The reason is simple, there not trying to improve the game they just add stuff that the people who haven't bought the game yet want so that they can make more money from sales... You've already bought the game? Then they can't make any more money out of you, so they don't care. They see a lot of people saying they wont buy until there are ladders due to some weird attachment to the system from D2, so they put in ladders to get those sales... They don't care how it effects the game.
The days used to exist where a company would make the game the best they can and hope that it being good would generate sales... Now a company simply releases a game and then repeatedly patches it for each persons needs until they can get every person possible to buy the game even if the resulting game is a mess.
I'm fucking bummed by seasons. I don't have enough time to play this crap and yes I would like to have a chance at those exclusive items who are probably better then anything we can get in regular games. I have a job and a social life, I play 4-5 hours a week max, how the fuck am I supposed to make ladder work for me.
If you cant play 8-12 hours a day and share the account with 2-3 other people to assure 24/7 grinding uptime, you are clearly not worthy of new content.
That is the unfortunate reality that most of my friends feel setting in too. Almost everyone I play with has said that 2.1 very well might be the end of D3 for them, depending on the length of the seasons. If they're short, probably won't be bad. If they're long (and non-ladder players have to wait ages for the new items) then that may very well be the nail in the coffin.
For some reason, ladder-only items makes everyone think they're going to be the next streaming hero savior of the community. It's a lot like worshiping the rich because one day you too might be rich. Ladders could make me more like Kongor, so I have to support ladder-only items because that's my ticket to stardom. It's really a social disease.
