The number of Arcane Dust needed to craft bracers has now gone up to 120, and I am wondering if this really intended to be a gold sink. After all, can't we just purchase blue items from vendors and then salvage them into the Dust we need? What do you think, is this decision (which has already been confirmed as being intentional, and not a bug) really a gold sink in disguise? If it's not, I'm baffled about why the "lowest" crafting material is now arguably the hardest to hoard (if not purchased from vendors and salvaged); I see people complaining about Arcane Dust holding them back from crafting quite a bit.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.
Ah, okay. I am at work at the moment and just read the news about the increase in required Arcane Dust, so I hadn't tried it myself. Well, now that I know we can't buy and then salvage blue items, I am even more perplexed about Blizzard's decision here. Anyone got any reason why this would be a good idea? And by "this" I specifically mean raising the Arcane Dust requirement instead of, say, the Death's Breath or Veiled Crystal requirement.

I think it's a great idea. You can get infinite Veiled Crystals if you're doing RIF and farming Kadala. However, you'll probably soon start to run low on Arcane Dust. IMO it could be an ingenious way of saying "Stop doing RIF only", because Arcane Dust drops as a standalone drop from mobs fairly frequently. But maybe that's me just giving excessive credit.
When I want to craft bracers, I simply make sure I start picking up all the blue items in a rift as opposed to yellows. All non respendent chest will usually cough up one blue if not two, and thankfully it's not a 1 dust per blue deal on salvaging. You get multiple dust per.

That's a really interesting observation and I think you might be on to something there.

Do you find that you end a run with roughly the same amount of Crystals and Dust, though? Do you end with a ratio of Crystals:Dust that is similar to what is needed for crafting? I realize you get multiple Dusts per salvage, but it seems that blue items also drop a lot less frequently than yellows, especially at the higher difficulties, so even when I pick up and salvage all the ones I see, I don't think I hit the right ratio of Crystals:Dust.

Most people grab yellows and leave the blues in a group run.. I'm baffled by people crying they don't have enough arcane dust.
Maybe the higher the level you're running the less blues? Because I'm running anywhere from t1 to t4 and I have plenty.
Whenever I run solo, I grab everything and slavage, when I group run, strictly yelows and up, and I'll fill the inventory and have to leave crap on the ground. Which is why I run some solo's and grab everything...
maybe this is an attempt toskew the crafting back towards the lower level players a bit?
Used to sell yellows to vendor for cash but that just bites you in the ass. Everything gets salvaged and cash comes from picking it up off the ground or completing quests/bounties/rifts. I don't sell anything to vendors, cept my old crafting materials....that was nice.
I typically tend to only go out of my way to pick up blues while in rifts. Most single yellow drops aren't worth the time considering I pick them up in bulk from rift guardians, goblins, and especially Kadala. Just whenever you find yourself opening a chest, chances are you'll get some blue drops so just grab them. This tends to work well when in a group or solo, less time spent on grabbing yellow means your inventory almost never fills fully before the guardian, so its perfect for Rift it Forward
In my personal opinion, the "lack" of Arcane Dust for many players probably results from the efficiency-driven gameplay that dictates to not pick up anything (or not salvage everything). I've been picking up a full inventory of items, preferably blue over yellow items, in every single of my 1600 rifts. Therefore, I have no lack of Arcane Dust and never had one (currently sitting on 6k+, with all 6 classes fully equipped and bracers of all elements/main stats crafted).
If you start gathering materials now it'll take you some time to catch up. But in general I think it's fine. Is it ridiculous that bracers cost 120 Arcane Dust? Yes. But it's been like that for ages, and we all had time to adapt/prepare. The bottle neck so far has been the legendary material, now it's Arcane Dust. If they change the cost to 12 Arcane Dust the bottle neck will be something else, so what? There always has to be a bottle neck. For me it's still gold (albeit farming T6 with 5000% gold find for quite a while now).
Yeah, my bottleneck is still forgotten souls probably as I don't do as many rifts as some. Coupled with my hording tendencies in stash, but that is changing. I'm learning to look at stuff and see it'll never be of use, or could be way better and then it's gone...
I honestly think someone could write a short thread on what to look for in new Leg drops and if it's not there, salvage it! Maybe in the class forums?
